I'd be interested to see what the McMahon's could muster up to compete with the UFC. The main reason that the UFC is the single most profitable league/organization in MMA is that it features the best fighters. In MMA, most fans won't pay for less than the best. And, it should be clarified, the biggest obstacle facing the McMahon's is that MMA is not sports entertainment, it's a legitimate sport. Reply

Radio Value Opportunity Beckons: Calling Warren Buffett [view article]
You are on the "money" in the valuation of cash-flow business.

This particular one requires a "holdings Company" concept to realize the optimum "value" (basically re-use) of the cash flow.

In the case of B-H, the units are too small for the necessary attention to the value generators (particularly programing adjustments and demographics adaptations). But they would fit inside the shells of older "news" and "entertainment&qu... enterprises.

What seems to be missing is the ability of the aggregated broadcasters to deploy their cash flows for optimum base growth. That kind of "stall-out" in optimum deployment is seen to some degrre in other cash generators such as Ebay, MSFT, and some lessser players. The use to buy back shares (retire capital from earned surplus) shows one of the deficiencies of the class and level of managements in broadcasting.

What is the most nearly optimum deployment for such cash flows?
Would it be into asset acquisitions at depressed cycles? Other operations that require cash infusion whilst the utimate product is in process (a la motion pictures; realty development; mining?)?

Apparently missing is that extra level of "management,"... basically proprietary management, that deals with using the "milk" from the cash cow - above and beyond the operating managers that make the cow produce cash.

The Radio and Recording Industries' Unnecessary Roughness [view article]
If U.S. broadcasters want to continue their free ride based on the quaint notion that FM radio is still relevant, then there's room for compromise. Pay a performance royalty like the rest of the civilized world, or bring back 70s-style progressive radio. You know, where new artists get a chance, music is selected based more on quality than bogus research and "marketing incentives" and broadcasters are regulated to encourage both competition and public service.

I didn't think so. The radio industry has been drinking the Kool-Aid for so long that they are hopelessly mired in a downward spiral that will only end when the FCC says they are wasting airspace and that the public will be better served with other applications in their frequency spectrum.

Here's an indicator: The best-selling iPod accessory is not a receiver -- it's a transmitter!

I have seen the same comments made in the past about free TV and how people are not going to pay for something they already get for free. My thought is with companies like Sirius and XM that you done just get music and non stop commercials, but you get content. Sporting events, music, talk radio while your on a long trip that wont all of a sudden cut out on you because you are out of the range of the radio tower is a huge advantage to the sattelite based business. So in my humble and non Warren Buffet like opion I think sattelite radio like cable television is here for the long run, or until the next great unforseable technology comes along. Dont get me wrong though free radio like our five free TV channels, should always have a place in a free society. Reply

Wishful thinking. BBGI at 11.5x EV/EBITDA is cheap? SBSA at 9.5x? CMLS at 10.6x? The only thing left is asset value, and subtracting out the debt even from that these companies are still expensive. Add in management (who still think its 1996) with super voting control and it's no wonder why no one wants to touch the float. Don't waste your time. Reply

the old saying goes you get what you pay for. FM radio is free but it's unlistenable now. The commercials are endless, the choke on free speech, those 7 dirty wurds that can't be said, if they slip up, the FCC stomps on em, cus' you know we need to protect peopel from the spoken word..... that's been done in otehr dictatorships, it works for a while, then it fails. sattelite is teh future, FM is now what AM is when FM was born in teh 60's. Does AM still exist? With all that static, noise low fidelity. FM is teh new AM, as far as programing, it all sucks. Unlistenable. Let's all hope SIRI and XM merge so they continue to offer real radio, with real people, talking liek REAL PEOPLE. Not having to talk like everything is a violation in this "free" country. If FM radio is so embedded, with a BILLION receivers, why is the FCC and the gov't staling and claiming SIRI/XM merger is a monopoly, buffet says terestial radio is forever, someone is wrong.....And both are actually. Satelites have changed tv, telephone, why not RADIO? I do own SIRI stock, cus' it's the future, FM radio is the rotary phone of broadcasting, lame programing, mindless blather, censorship too. Reply

Absolutely right on the money. And in addition, there are virtually no new licenses being added, meaning that radio's quasi-monopolistic status will endure. Well-managed radio companies that focus on their core business continue to throw off amazing amounts of free cash flow. Reply

I am not in radio but I do have half my investment capital in Berkshire, and having travelled extensively, I would add another point to that radio moat: It isn't just the license; it is the content. A strong station playing oldies, or acid rock, or talk, or religion, or whatever seems hard to tackle, to me. People find their station in a new town and seem to stick with it for life. I'm in Texas now, but I remember even ten years after leaving Illinois I could still recite the call sign and dial position of a radio station I had not heard in a decade. The only thing that ever prompted me to switch radio stations was a blatant racist comment (no, not that Imus one recently) by a disc jockey. I found another station, and even that idiot was fired, they eventually went out of business. So they are not invulnerable to complete idiocy, but no business is, and I think that whatever human psychology it is that gets people stuck on one frequency for LIFE is a moat in itself. Reply

Seem's Like the Clinton's Think The White-House is a Animal Party House - Support Nafta-Cafta - Out-sourcing - and Pardon all the Clinto Family Crooks .......

As You can find out - Hillary is getting big funding from banking-mortgage companys = ask the question - are they seeking pardons and a big bail-out????

Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Chris Dodd, head of
the Senate Banking Committee, have been some of the largest beneficiaries
of the mortgage banking industry, whose dollars have provided a strong
incentive for Congress to sit tight and hope the subprime bubble wouldn't burst.

Denise Rich Gave $450,000 to Clinton Library

The ex-wife of fugitive commodities giant Marc Rich donated $450,000 to the Clinton presidential library before then-President Clinton pardoned the billionaire last month, ABCNEWS has learned.

Democratic sources say the donations were made in three installments, the first in July of 1998, the second in August 1999, and the final one last May. The sources did not know of any further commitment by Denise Rich for future library contributions.

Ms. Rich, a prominent supporter of the Democratic Party, had been at the forefront of a coordinated effort to convince Clinton to pardon her former husband, who had been wanted by a handful of federal law enforcement agencies after being indicted in 1983 on 51 counts of tax fraud, mail fraud, racketeering and illegally trading with Iran during the U.S. trade embargo.

Details of that effort, including word of the donations, were described during a Thursday hearing of the House Committee on Government Reform, which has been examining circumstances surrounding the pardon, one of several granted on Clinton's final day in office.

Ms. Rich, however, declined to provide details about the contribution, citing her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. The Clinton library so far has also refused to discuss the donations.

Consider, for example, Mr. Clinton's decision to commute the sentences of four Hasidic men from New Square, N.Y., who were in prison for defrauding the government by inventing a fictitious religious school and using it to attract millions in government aid. The commutations were granted after Mr. Clinton and his wife, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, met privately in December with supporters of the men, whose politically active sect had overwhelmingly backed Mrs. Clinton in her victorious Senate campaign. Mrs. Clinton denies any responsibility for the president's commutation decision and denies even knowing that commutation would be discussed. But her presence at the meeting surely underscores her interest in accommodating these constituents. The United States attorney in New York, Mary Jo White, vigorously opposed the commutations, which she learned about only at the last minute.

OTTAWA (AFP) - US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton's campaign,
while rapping rival Barack Obama for telling US voters he is anti-NAFTA
and saying otherwise to Canada, tried to reassure Canada too, local
    media said Thursday.

A top aide of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper meanwhile was
identified as the likely source of an alleged leak that provoked a diplomatic
fiasco involving both US Democratic presidential contenders.

Last month, Harper's chief of staff, Ian Brodie, purportedly made impromptu
remarks to journalists about Clinton's US presidential bid, said Canadian
    reports.

The offhand comments apparently sought to downplay the potential impact on
Canada of Clinton and Obama's attacks on the North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA) during stops in the US state of Ohio.

    Canadians deny Obama call

A spokesman for the Canadian Embassy to the United States, Tristan Landry,
flatly denied the CTV report that a senior Obama aide had told the Canadian
ambassador not to take seriously Obama's denunciations of NAFTA.

"None of the presidential campaigns have called either the ambassador or any
of the officials here to raise NAFTA," Landry said.

He said there had been no conversations at all on the subject.

"We didn't make any calls, they didn't call us," Landry said.

"There is no story as far as we’re concerned," he said.

The Crooks are live and well:

The Pledge Of Americans for Tax Reform - Grover Norquist

Now we don't even need to go into - How this group filed lawsuits
to keep the michigan primary - Fixed !!!!

But lets look at this so-called pledge Americans have to take -
To this group Americans for Tax Reform.

Every Republican running for office - has to take this pledge -
Now when they pledge to this group - There not pledgeing there
allegance to the Constitution of these United States.

So exactly who are these Republicans taking a pledge to???

There's an incredible story brewing in Washington that is too hot
    for the networks to touch.

Grover Norquist, whom most conservatives know as Executive Director
of the College Republicans, boardmember of the NRA, and head of
Americans for Tax Reform, has been exposed as helping Muslim groups
and individuals who finance and support Islamic terrorism gain access
    to the Bush White House.

"""Norq... has also been exposed as the founder of the Islamic Insitute,
a group believed to be funded by foreign governments, Wahhab Islam
elements in Saudi Arabia, and U.S. Muslim groups recently raided by a
special Treasury Department task force for funding Al Qaeda and Palestinian
terrorists. The Islamic Institute's website lists the following goals.""&quo...

WHAT SAY YOU NOW, GROVER NORQUIST? Posted on 07/31/2004 5:31:06 AM PDT by SJackson

Court documents to be made public today will trace in rich detail an explosive
allegation that Alamoudi made in plea negotiations with prosecutors -- that Libyan
leader Moammar Gaddafi plotted to assassinate Crown Prince Abdullah, de facto ruler
    of Saudi Arabia...

His arrest last September shook the U.S. Muslim community and reverberated through
Washington's political elite. As leader of the American Muslim Council, Alamoudi
met on occasion with senior Clinton and Bush administration officials. He also helped
found the Pentagon's Muslim chaplain program and is particularly well known in the
Muslim community of Northern Virginia, where he helped run a number of charities
    and political groups.
