- Tuesday, May 21, 11:06 AM Shares of Carnival (CCL, CUK) fall 6.8% following the company's guidance cut and a dispiriting wave of analyst downgrades. Though execs with the cruise line operator gave a spirited pitch for a turnaround during the Q1 earnings call (transcript), increased promotional activity continues to take a heavy toll on the company's sales and profits. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]

Losers: FSGI -46%. CIMT -10%. CUK -7%. NBG -6%. CCL -6%. Comment! [On the Move] - Monday, May 20, 5:38 PM Carnival (CCL) -4.5% AH after warning it expects 2013 EPS of $1.45-$1.65, below prior guidance of $1.80-$2.10 and a consensus of $1.97. The cruise line operator says its net revenue yield will be down 2%-3% in 2013, worse than prior guidance for flat growth, thanks to soft ticket pricing, higher-than-expected trip cancellations, and higher sales/admin costs. It looks as if Hedgeye was right. RCL -1.5% in sympathy. NCLH could also end up falling. Comment! [Consumer, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 9, 3:26 PM Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL -1.2%) could hit choppy waters, according to Hedgeye. The research firm's monthly pricing survey shows Carnival is having to get very aggressive with promotions to keep cruises full - while peers Royal Caribbean (RCL -0.6%) and Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCLH -0.4%) continue to take advantage of the hit to Carnival's reputation this year. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 9, 7:38 AM Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is back in the headlines after one of its cruise ships returns to port missing two passengers. Though surveillance video shows the pair falling into the ocean from the mid-deck, it isn't clear to authorities yet if the leaps were accidental or intentional. A string of incidents this year has cut into the company's demand and forced it to become a bit more promotional than peers. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 17, 1:28 PM Carnival (CCL -1%) will spend over $600M to add extra generators and improved fire suppression systems to its fleet of ships run under the Carnival Cruise Lines flag and other cruise lines it owns. The string of headline-grabbing incidents this year with Carnival ships has affected Wave Season bookings, according to industry watchers. While Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCLH -0.9%) is showing strong demand and Royal Caribbean (RCL -0.8%) is mildly ahead of last year's pace, Carnival is discounting prices by as much as 8% and bookings are off by over 10%. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 17, 9:40 AM Carnival (CCL +0.1%) says it will spend $300M to upgrade its fleet after an engine room fire stranded a ship off the coast of Mexico in February. That incident cost the firm from both a reputational and monetary perspective as it recently said it will reimburse the government for the Coast Guard's assistance with the stranded ship. Comment!
- Wednesday, April 17, 6:45 AM Carnival Corporation (CCL) declares $0.25/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 3.00%. For shareholders of record May 25. Payable June 14. Ex-div date May 22. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Tuesday, April 16, 7:15 AM Carnival (CCL) will reimburse the U.S. government for costs tied to the rescue and assistance of ships stranded at sea earlier this year. The move by the company could be an attempt to calm down rhetoric on Capitol Hill over a potential Cruise Ship Passenger Bill of Rights. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, April 15, 5:57 PM Carnival (CCL) will voluntarily reimburse the U.S. Coast Guard for its efforts in assisting two cruise ships which caught fire and became stranded in 2010 and in February of this year. The company's decision comes after its CEO endured congressional criticism (Sen. Jay Rockefeller) regarding its perceived willingness to accept help from the Navy and Coast Guard but propensity to make "low" tax payments, according to WSJ. (Previously: CCL accepts $1.31M fine) Comment!
- Wednesday, April 10, 10:32 AM Costa Cruises (CCL +0.5%) accepts a $1.3M settlement in relation to the deadly grounding of its ship off the coast of Italy. Carnival will avoid a criminal trail and any more liability with the government of Italy by settling, but still faces a financial impact due to ongoing tarnishing of its brand with a string of cruise liner incidents. Analysts have noted an increase in promotional activity by Carnival compared to peers in order to keep bookings percolating. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 4, 8:21 AM Shares of Carnival Cruise (CCL) slip 2% in premarket trading after cruise ship Triumph breaks away from its mooring at the Alabama shipyard where it was being repaired. By all appearance, the incident was caused by strong winds and nothing the company did wrong although it brings more attention to the company's string of mishaps. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, April 3, 4:17 PM Carnival (CCL) confirms that high winds have caused one of its ships, named the Carnival Triumph, to break loose from its mooring at BAE Shipyard in Mobile Alabama. Some reports are saying crew members might be in the water. It's now resting against a cargo vessel. Of note: this is the same ship that lost propulsion in the Gulf of Mexico in February, eventually leaving thousands of passengers stranded aboard with backed up toilets and limited food. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 3, 9:05 AM A channel check by Jefferies indicates cruise line operators Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCLH) and Royal Caribbean (RCL) are benefiting from the woes of Carnival (CCL). Ticket prices are improving for the pair, while Carnival has been forced to get more promotional to make up for a slew of troubling headlines. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, March 20, 11:49 AM As Carnival (CCL +1%) works on repairs on a pair of cruise liners which experienced dramatic engines problems mid-cruise, cancellations on future cruises are starting to pile up. The company says it will cancel 10 planned trips for Triumph and two European sojourns for Sunshine. Analysts continue to warn that the misadventures on the high seas may force the company to discount cruise prices in order to boost sales. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, March 18, 9:29 AM Carnival's (CCL) Legend made it back into port yesterday after engine troubles limited its sailing speed. Unfortunately, for the company - and perhaps the industry (RCL, NCLH) - politicians have grabbed ahold of the issue. New York Senator Charles Schumer proposed a "Cruise Ship Passenger Bill of Rights" to improve conditions and expectations in the industry. CCL -3.2% premarket. 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
