U.S. ethanol production is headed for the first decline in 16 years, as higher costs and lower demand close plants. Shrinking distilling margins have resulted in a 14% drop in output this year to 827K bbl/day, or 12.7B gallons annually. Prices have gained 6.4% YTD to $2.344/gal. after falling 12% last year, not enough to make distilling it profitable.

Celanese (CE -4%) shares are downgraded to Market Perform with a $44-$46 range at Wells Fargo, which cites CE's product update. While the firm is "impressed with the technology and the favorable position it provides CE in the long term," it says near-term challenges, driven in large part by unfavorable macros, leads it to trim 2012 and 2013 EPS estimates.

Celanese (CE +1.6%) says a jury has ruled in its favor in a suit filed by Southern Chemical relating to the terms of a multi-year methanol supply contract for CE's U.S. and Mexico-based operations. The jury determined that Celanese did not violate the terms of the contract, and Southern Chemical should continue to supply methanol until its expiration.
