    Exelon (EXC) has declared an "alert" - the second lowest of four NRC action levels - at its New Jersey Oyster Creek nuclear facility after flood waters caused by Hurricane Sandy rose over 2M and threatened to submerge the pumps that circulate water through the plant. However, the water was expected to recede following high tide. Constellation Energy's (CEG) Nine Mile Point 1 nuclear plant in New York has shut down due to difficulties putting power onto the grid.

    Constellation Energy (CEG +2.8%) says it will pay $245M to settle FERC claims related to certain energy-trading transactions in New York wholesale energy markets. Shares in the company will cease trading tomorrow following the company's merger with Exelon (EXC +2.5%).

    The continuing decline in natural gas (off 6.9% today) and resultant fall in electricity prices is shelving alternative energy projects from NextEra (NEE), Exelon (EXC), and CMS, but Michael Morris of American Electric Power (AEP) warns about becoming too dependent on gas. "The way to make $4 gas, $8 gas is for everyone to go out and build ... natural-gas plants."

    Exelon (EXC +0.6%) and Constellation Energy (CEG +1.7%) agree to boost investments they will make in Maryland as part of a settlement reached with the state in connection with the companies' merger. EXC and CEG say they plan to spend $1B-plus in Maryland, more than double an earlier proposal, on projects that could create more than 6,000 jobs.
