- Thursday, May 30, 4:29 PM Palo Alto Networks (PANW) now -13.9% AH in response to its mixed FQ3 results. With shares trading at lofty multiples, there was little margin for error. In its PR, Palo Alto mentions seeing a "touch macroeconomic environment" (peers can sympathize), but doesn't give a specific reason for its revenue miss. Revenue growth of 54% is a slowdown from FQ2's 70%. Still, deferred revenue rose 17% Q/Q to $219.3M. Opex +70% Y/Y to $80M, with sales/marketing spend +71% to $51.7M (51% of revenue). CC getting started (webcast), guidance should be provided. Off in sympathy: CHKP -1.2%. FIRE -2.2%. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Monday, April 22, 6:42 AM Check Point Software Technologies (CHKP): Q1 EPS of $0.79 beats by $0.01. Revenue of $322.7M (+3.1% Y/Y) misses by $6M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech]

- Sunday, April 21, 5:30 PM Notable earnings before Monday’s open: BEAV, BOH, CAT, CHKP, HAL, HAS, NVR, PHG, SIX 1 Comment [Earnings]
- Wednesday, April 10, 4:35 PM Fortinet (FTNT) -13.5% AH after warning it expects Q1 revenue of $134M-$136M and EPS of $0.10, below a consensus of $140.4M and $0.12. Billings are pegged at $147M-$149M, below guidance of $158M-$162M. The company blames a failure to close a few U.S. service provider deals (F5's warning also cited telco demand), EMEA/Latin America weakness, and inventory shortages and product timing issues. Asia-Pac and U.S. enterprise demand was healthy. With shares trading at 36x 2013E EPS, there wasn't much room for error. Did Ken Goldman's departure play a role? CC at 5PM ET (webcast). CHKP -1.3%. PANW -0.8%. FIRE -1.5%. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Friday, April 5, 6:19 PM J.P. Morgan's Thomas Lee notes that several laggards in the first quarters of 2009-12 rebounded in Q2, so he figures select tech stocks look appealing now. Tech's forward P/E ratio is below the market's for the first time in 17 years, Lee says. His most noteworthy call is to buy Apple (AAPL), which slid 16% Q/Q. Some other favorites: BRCM, CHKP, ESRX, MYL, TASR, CHS, F, COF. 14 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, March 25, 10:16 AM Lazard cuts Check Point (CHKP -1.9%) to Neutral; the firm says channel checks indicate share losses to Palo Alto Networks (PANW) are growing. Palo Alto's next-gen firewalls are causing headaches for incumbent firewall vendors Check Point, Cisco, and Juniper thanks to their ability to support deeper content analysis on an integrated platform. The company recently bragged of an 85% win rate in deals it competes for. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 12, 1:51 PM Security hardware stocks rally on expectations Pres. Obama will issue an executive order meant to bolster government spending on cybersecurity following tonight's State of the Union. Intrusion prevention system leader SourceFire (FIRE +8.8%), which received 28% of its sales from the U.S. government in Q3, is the biggest winner, but Fortinet (FTNT +4.3%), Check Point (CHKP +1.2%), and Palo Alto Networks (PANW +1.1%) are also higher. 3 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 31, 3:59 PM Strong earnings from Citrix, Fortinet, and SGI have translated into solid gains for a number of enterprise IT stocks. Winners include security hardware firms Sourcefire (FIRE +4.9%), Palo Alto Networks (PANW +2.8%), and Check Point (CHKP +3%), and server adapter card/interconnect switch makers Mellanox (MLNX +6.2%) and Emulex (ELX +2.6%), WAN optimization leader Riverbed (RVBD +1.7%), and Citrix virtualization/cloud management rival Red Hat (RHT +2%). Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, January 30, 5:49 PM Fortinet (FTNT) guides on its Q4 call for Q1 revenue of $138M-$141M and 2013 revenue of $625M-$635M, mostly above a consensus of $139.6M and $618.9M. The company expects 2013 EPS of $0.60-$0.61, in-line with a $0.61 consensus. Shares +16.3% AH thanks to the guidance and a strong Q4 beat. Recent downgrades aren't looking too smart. Up in sympathy: PANW +3.1%. FIRE +4.9%. CHKP +1%. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 29, 7:14 PM F5 (FFIV -0.8%) is entering the firewall hardware market: the company's new BIG-IP Advanced Firewall Manager combines several security and network management features offered in the past as modules for its core application delivery controller products - that could be necessary to stand out in a market that features tough competition from incumbents Cisco, Juniper, and Check Point, as well as upstarts such as Palo Alto Networks. (PR) (previous) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, January 23, 5:31 AM Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (CHKP): Q4 EPS of $0.91 beats by $0.03. Revenue of $368.6M (+3.3% Y/Y). (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, Tech]

- Thursday, January 3, 2:22 PM Security hardware stocks are having a rough day: Palo Alto Networks (PANW -3.1%), Fortinet (FTNT -7.8%), Sourcefire (FIRE -3.6%), and Check Point (CHKP -5%) are among the losers. Stephens has started coverage on Palo Alto with an Equal Weight and $50 PT; shares of the fast-growing and richly-valued next-gen firewall vendor fell 4.3% yesterday in the face of a giant tech rally. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, November 13, 2012, 10:02 AM Palo Alto Networks (PANW +1.1%) is outperforming after introducing the VM-Series, a next-gen firewall that can run on servers using VMware's (VMW) virtualization software. The allows the firewall (and its policies) to be quickly moved from server to server. Palo Alto also introduced new mid-range hardware, a malware prevention service, and an update to the OS its firewalls run on. Gartner notes Check Point (CHKP) has long offered a virtual firewall, but expects the VMware partnership to give Palo Alto, whose solutions are differentiated in other respects, a lift. swingtrader427: Sales price - cost = Profit. Profit / cost = ROI. If you bought Apple stock for $50 and now its $600, your profit is more than 100% -
Ocean Man: You couldn't be more wrong. You divide dollar amount of gain by amount at risk. And your risk on this trade was infinite.
