- Tuesday, May 7, 1:37 PM Sina (SINA -2.5%) gives back yesterday's gains after Tencent (TCEHY.PK) says it has reached "preliminary solutions" with Chinese mobile carriers (CHL, CHU, CHA) regarding its very popular WeChat mobile IM platform, which both generates heavy traffic and eats into text-messaging revenue (China Mobile's text revenue fell 4.8% last year). That's likely raising fears Sina might have to pay carriers for the traffic produced by Weibo, arguably WeChat's top rival. Tencent has said it's unlikely to charge WeChat users. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 11:05 AM Apple (AAPL +3.1%) has bounced to $546 with the help of positive analyst commentary. While Morgan Stanley talks up potential iTV interest, JPMorgan is raising its forecast for Q4 AT&T (T) iPhone activations to 8M from 7M. Also, ISI's Brian Marshall is expecting a strong Chinese iPhone 5 launch - China Unicom (CHU) just announced its pre-orders have topped 300K. (Apple Monitor) 21 Comments [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 11:04 AM Though many pundits, analysts, and (reportedly) employees liked Apple's (AAPL -2.3%) big management shakeup (I, II), shares have fallen below the $600 threshold today. Scott Forstall had plenty of critics, but he also earned a lot of respect on account of iOS' success over the last 5 years. Today's decline comes as Chinese regulators give their approval to iPhone 5 models meant for China Unicom (CHU) and China Telecom's (CHA) 3G networks. 35 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, October 22, 2012, 11:47 AM China Mobile (CHL +2.7%) is rallying after posting its Q3 report, and is giving rival China Unicom (CHU +1.9%) a lift along the way. A ~9M Q/Q 3G subscriber increase is going over well, as is the company's claims that its declining ARPU is stabilizing due to rising mobile data traffic. Citi is reiterating a Buy, touting CHL's 3G growth, 4% yield, and budding 4G network (still in trial stage), but expects margins to remain pressured in Q4. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, August 23, 2012, 10:36 AM China Unicom (CHU +7.1%) jumps after reporting a Q2 net profit of CNY2.42B ($381M), slightly better than analyst estimates. China's #2 carrier also reported 1H mobile service revenue rose 23.4% Y/Y, and that it ended June with 219.2M total subscribers and 57.5M 3G subscribers. ARPU rose 2.8% Y/Y to CNY48.1 ($7.57). (CHA results) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, August 16, 2012, 11:06 AM China Mobile (CHL -5.5%) slumps after its Q2 earnings miss estimates, and the company promises to continue investing heavily in phone subsidies. Much like the U.S. mobile industry (previous), ramping sales of subsidized smartphones appear to be hurting the margins of Chinese carriers. Another challenge is the growing mobile adoption of instant messaging and social networking services such as Tencent QQ and Sina Weibo, which is impacting voice and text-messaging activity. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, July 5, 2012, 10:45 AM China Unicom (CHU +7.1%) soars after HSBC upgrades the company to Neutral. The firm declares China's #2 mobile carrier to have an increasingly attractive valuation, following its recent selloff. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, June 20, 2012, 3:55 AM China Unicom (CHU) -3.7% in Hong Kong trading after announcing it added a net 2.73M 3G subscribers in May, a 6.6% decrease in subscriber growth from April. Analysts attributed the results to weaker consumer spending. The news prompted BofA to cut the company’s 2012 net income forecast by 18%. 1 Comment [On the Move, Earnings, Tech]
- Thursday, March 22, 2012, 2:15 PM China Unicom (CHU -2.6%) heads lower after reporting a 2011 profit that missed expectations, as 3G and broadband subscriber growth fails to offset declining 2G subs and growing handset subsidy costs. Unicom, which plans to spend CNY100B ($15.9B) in 2012 capex, now also has to contend with a loss of Chinese iPhone exclusivity, as rival China Telecom (CHA) begins selling the 4S. (earlier) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Thursday, March 15, 2012, 12:48 PM Research In Motion (RIMM +2.5%) shares rise amid news China Unicom (CHU +1.7%) launched internet service for BlackBerry users. The gain comes despite an MKM report pointing to channel checks which note "abnormally" high warranty returns at Verizon for BlackBerry 7 models; many are said to lock up right out of the box and need immediate replacement. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]

[On the Move] - Thursday, October 27, 2011, 10:56 AM China Unicom (CHU -2.5%) trades lower after posting a Q3 net profit of $248M, slightly below analyst estimates. Unicom, which claims over 189M wireless subscribers and is currently the only Chinese carrier selling the iPhone (AAPL), says its ARPU rose 9% Y/Y. Comment! [Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, July 20, 2011, 10:39 AM China Mobile (CHL +3.1%) gains on speculation it may offer Apple's (AAPL +2.4%) iPhone as early as September in a market that already saw a large monthly gain in mobile subscribers for June. Total subscriber tally: China Mobile 617M, China Unicom (CHU -1.1%) 182M, China Telecom (CHA -0.5%) 108M. 1 Comment [Global & FX, Tech, On the Move]
