Apple's (AAPL -0.2%) Chinese sales, now 20% of its total and heavily responsible for its FQ2 beat, have gone from amounting to less than $1B/year prior to China Unicom's (CHU) 2009 iPhone launch to currently being on a $25B+/year annual rate. This staggering growth comes even though over half of iOS sales come from a handful of wealthy urban provinces, and top carrier China Mobile (CHL) isn't yet selling the iPhone.

In spite of rumors to the contrary, Google (GOOG) is unlikely to sell off Motorola Mobility's (MMI) hardware business in the near-term, Taiwanese phone makers tell Digitimes. Separately, the site notes Motorola is entering the burgeoning low-end Chinese Android market via its XT390 phone, which will be sold by China Unicom (CHU). (more on GOOG)

China Unicom (CHU -2.6%) heads lower after reporting a 2011 profit that missed expectations, as 3G and broadband subscriber growth fails to offset declining 2G subs and growing handset subsidy costs. Unicom, which plans to spend CNY100B ($15.9B) in 2012 capex, now also has to contend with a loss of Chinese iPhone exclusivity, as rival China Telecom (CHA) begins selling the 4S. (earlier)

Bemoaning average download speeds that are well below the global average, the Chinese government is calling for a new national broadband strategy. A major broadband push by the government would have an impact on top ISPs CHA and CHU, whose broadband investment levels have been criticized, and perhaps also merging online video sites YOKU and TUDO.

China is on the brink of passing a whopping 1B cell-phone subscribers - if it hasn't already - with February snapshots from operators showing that the number stood at 999.7M. China Telecom (CHA) has 132.3M customers, China Mobile (CHL) 661.4M, and China Unicom (CHU) 206M. Apple and co. must be rubbing their hands with glee.

Research In Motion (RIMM +2.5%) shares rise amid news China Unicom (CHU +1.7%) launched internet service for BlackBerry users. The gain comes despite an MKM report pointing to channel checks which note "abnormally" high warranty returns at Verizon for BlackBerry 7 models; many are said to lock up right out of the box and need immediate replacement.

As expected, #3 Chinese carrier China Telecom (CHA) announces it will begin selling the iPhone 4S. Until now, #2 China Unicom (CHU) had been the only Chinese carrier authorized to sell the iPhone. China Mobile (CHL), the world's largest carrier, could strike a deal after Apple (AAPL) introduces the iPhone 5, which might support China Mobile's nascent 4G LTE network. (previously)

Apple (AAPL) could sell as many as 57M iPhones/year in China within a couple of years, claims Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty. Huberty's forecast assumes China Telecom (CHA) and China Mobile (CHL) get their hands on the device, and see a rate of adoption similar to what China Unicom (CHU) has seen. In 2011, Apple sold roughly 89M iPhones worldwide. (previously)

China Unicom (CHU), the only Chinese carrier authorized to sell the iPhone (for now, anyway), has begun selling prepaid Android phones at a price of just $158. Moreover, Digitimes' sources claim rivals CHL and CHA are likely to follow suit. The arrival of cheaper Android phones could prove a headache for local chipmaker Spreadtrum (SPRD), which has a weak position in the smartphone processor market. (previously)

Apple (AAPL) aborts retail sales of the iPhone 4S in China after customers queuing overnight in freezing temperatures became aggressive in a botched debut that saw the flagship store fail to open while other stores sold out of the phone in one day. Not quite what China Unicom (CHU) had in mind when it said it planned to aggressively promote the iPhone 4S.

The Chinese government has approved an iPhone that appears to be built for China Telecom's (CHA) EV-DO 3G network. Thus far, Apple (AAPL) has only been able to officially sell the iPhone in the Middle Kingdom through China Unicom (CHU), though the 4S' inclusion of an EV-DO modem has led to widespread speculation (I, II) that China Telecom would be added as a partner.

China Unicom (CHU) plans to be aggressive with its iPhone 4S promotions. The carrier, which will begin selling the 4S on Jan. 13, will offer the 32GB model for free with a 3-year contract for a $46/month plan. Nonetheless, the plan could still be out of the price range of many Chinese consumers: Unicom's average revenue per 3G user in 1H '11 was less than $19.

In a stroke of good-timing, the iPhone 4S goes on sale in China a mere 10 days before the widely-celebrated Chinese New Year. Still unanswered about the launch: Will China Unicom (CHU -1.1%) hold on to its exclusive status as the only AAPL carrier or will rivals China Mobile (CHL -0.6%) and China Telecom (CHA -1.5%) gain access? Right now, CHL is the market share leader with 70%, compared to 20% for CHU and 10% for CHA.
