- Tuesday, February 5, 5:37 AM Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) has agreed to reinsure Cigna Corp. (CI) death benefits and retirement products in a deal that will provide Berkshire with $1.8B in investment assets but in which it will also take on up to $4B in liabilities. Cigna will fund the deal with $100M in cash and a $300M tax benefit, and will take a Q1 after-tax charge of $500M. (PR) Comment! [Financials]
- Wednesday, January 9, 3:33 AM Cigna (CI) could offload its death-benefits unit this year if "the right market conditions unfold," CEO David Cordani said. Closed to new business since 2001, the operations have acted as a drag on Cigna's share price due to its inherent risks. Cordani talked the unit up but analysts reckon that he might have to pay somebody to take it off his hands. Comment! [Healthcare, Financials]
- Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 11:16 AM Turning to non-agency MBS (webcast), JPMorgan gets even more bullish. Key is their expectation of 3-5% growth in home prices (with upside potential) in 2013. While the paper is likely to retain some correlation with risk on/risk off, the fundamentals of improving housing - rising prices, declining distressed sales, declining shadow inventory - will be of growing importance. (previous on MBS) Comment! [U.S. Economy, Financials]
- Friday, November 16, 2012, 4:51 PM Cigna (CI) guides 2013 earnings below its long-term forecast, now saying earnings would rise by 4% to 9% to between $5.80 to $6.25 per share, while sales will grow by 8% to 11% to between $31.5B to $32.5B. The Street had recently forecast earnings of $6.32 per a share on revenue of $29.28B. The increase is driven by company-wide expansion, but the lower forecast is tempered by plans for strategic investments and expectations for an uptick in medical-cost trends. Comment! [Financials, Earnings]
- Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 5:01 PM Third Point reports initiating new stakes in Mondelez (MDLZ), Nexen (NXY), Symantec (SYMC), WESCO (WCC), Autodesk (ADSK), while increasing its stakes in AIG (AIG), Apple (AAPL), Murphy Oil (MUR) and LyondellBasell (LYB). The firm liquidated positions in Plains Exploration (PXP), Liberty (LINTA), News Corp (NWSA), Capital One (COF) and DISH (DISH) over the quarter, and reduced stakes in Cigna (CI), ARIAD (ARIA), Cabot (COG) and Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE). (13-F) 1 Comment [Financials]
- Thursday, November 1, 2012, 6:04 AM Cigna (CI): Q3 EPS of $1.71 beats by $0.35. Revenue of $7.4B (+31% Y/Y) beats by $700M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Financials]

[Earnings]
- Friday, October 19, 2012, 10:43 AM Healthways (HWAY -11.3%) slips after its Q3 beat on its bottom line but came up short on revenue late yesterday. Net earnings fell 47% Y/Y as revenue was hurt by the continued wind-down of a contract with Cigna Corp. (CI). The company also lowered its full-year earnings estimates and narrowed its sales view due to higher operational costs as well as reduced revenue from two contracts that were renewed early. Comment! [Earnings, On the Move, Healthcare]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 11:49 AM Cigna (CI +1.3%) is a "boring homework exercise with potential for big rewards," says David Einhorn of another one of his long ideas. Fear and uncertainly surrounding Obamacare has left HMOs cheap. "Even when HMOs make less than expected, they make a lot." Why Cigna? It's higher quality and faster growing than its peers, yet trades at a discount to them. Comment! [Healthcare, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 9:58 AM Around 12M people will buy $55B worth of health coverage in 2014 via the insurance exchanges being created as part of Obamacare, PWC predicts, adding that the figures could rise to 29M people and $205B respectively by 2021. Most of the money will be new, although some will come from other parts of the market, such as from people whose employers had paid for coverage until now. 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 9:43 AM Daniel Loeb may chastise Pres. Obama, says Andrew Ross Sorkin, but look at Loeb's recent investments: Aetna (AET), Cigna (CI), Humana (HUM), UnitedHealth (UNH) and WellPoint (WLP) stand to benefit if Obamacare remains in force, while a repeal could send shares diving. Like others, Sorkin reckons industry consolidation represents multi-billion dollar bets that the Health Act is here to stay. Comment! [Healthcare]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 4:59 PM David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital levers up on healthcare issues this quarter, adding new positions in Aetna. (AET), Cigna Corp (CI), Humana (HUM), UnitedHealth Group (UNH) and WellPoint (WLP). 1 Comment [Healthcare]
- Thursday, August 2, 2012, 6:02 AM Cigna (CI): Q2 EPS of $1.52 beats by $0.09. Revenue of $7.5B (+35% Y/Y) beats by $270M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Financials]
