- Tuesday, March 6, 2012, 2:29 PM Cowen's healthcare conference sparks renewed chatter that Cigna (CI -2.7%) could unload its pharmacy benefit manager business, a move it considered in 2009. J.P. Morgan analysts say a sale would be the “best possible outcome” for CI's earnings; they also don’t rule out CI following Aetna in outsourcing its operations given CI believes the service is important. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Tuesday, February 21, 2012, 1:42 PM Shares of managed-care companies rise as the government's late-Friday release of preliminary 2013 rates for Medicare Advantage plans look better than expected. Bernstein says the rate news is "solidly positive" and well above the highest Street expectations: Humana (HUM +1.5%), Cigna (CI +1.4%) and Wellpoint (WLP +1%). Comment! [Healthcare]
- Thursday, February 2, 2012, 2:51 PM Cigna's (CI -3.9%) earnings fell 37% in Q4 amid acquisition-related charges and accounting changes, but the bigger weight on shares is the insurer's downward earnings guidance and rising use of medical services in the new year. Cigna expects 2012 EPS of $5-$5.40 vs. $5.68 consensus. Peers also are lower: AET -0.3%, CVH -1.2%, HUM -1.4%, UNH -1.4%, WLP -1.6%. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]

- Thursday, January 26, 2012, 12:23 PM Health insurance providers sell off after House Democrats release a GAO report (.pdf) that claims Medicare Advantage plans were overpaid by $1.2B-$3.1B in 2010, with excess payments continuing to grow afterwards. HUM -3.2%. UAM -4.5%. WLP -2.4%. UNH -2.7%. CI -2.8%. Cuts to Medicare Advantage are widely expected. (previously) Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Tuesday, January 17, 2012, 3:47 PM Cigna (CI +2.5%) moves higher after announcing a JV with Indian conglomerate TTK Group to sell health insurance products across India. Pending approval by India's regulatory authorities, Cigna TTK is expected to begin operations in early 2013 and will build its workforce locally. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 5, 2012, 12:06 PM In spite of their opposition to "Obamacare," health insurance firms such as WLP, UNH, and AET have performed well since 2010's reform bill was passed: a Bloomberg study estimates the insurers' average operating margin rose to 8.24% in the 6 quarters since the bill became law, compared with 6.88% in the 18 months prior to its passage. Rising Medicare and Medicaid revenues are behind the surge. 5 Comments [Healthcare]
- Thursday, December 8, 2011, 3:14 PM Healthways (HWAY +5.6%), which was crushed in October on news of a Cigna (CI) contract loss, rallies after Stifel upgrades shares to Buy and lifts its PT to $13. The firm notes Healthways' margins have held up well in the face of declining revenue, and thinks improving jobs data bodes well for the company. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, November 16, 2011, 9:44 AM Cigna (CI -1.6%) plans to sell 15M shares to help fund its pending $3.8B deal to acquire Medicare carrier HealthSpring (HS). Cigna earlier this month sold $2.1B of debt, and the equity issuance at Tuesday’s closing price would bring in ~$750M. Comment! [Healthcare, M&A]
- Friday, October 28, 2011, 6:20 AM Cigna (CI): Q3 EPS of $1.20 misses by $0.02. Revenue of $5.6B (+6.6% Y/Y) beats by $140M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Financials]

The day's biggest loser? No, not Neflix (NFLX -34.3%)... it's Healthways (HWAY -44%), which posts its worst-ever share price loss after disclosing its top customer, Cigna (CI), will allow its contract with the company to wind down ahead of expiration. The Cigna loss, while hitting revenues only by 15%, impacts earnings by up to 60%, Piper Jaffray says, seeing no EPS growth for two years.
Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move] - Monday, October 24, 2011, 8:53 AM SXC Health Solutions (SXCI) -23.8% premarket following news that customer HealthSpring (HS) will be acquired by Cigna (CI). SXCI could be negatively impacted by the deal due to its relationship with HS, which could be in danger since CI likely would provide the same services. Comment! [Healthcare, On the Move]
