Bancolombia: Attractive, But Not For the Faint of Heart (CIB) [view article]
Hey, I keep coming back to your article. I am now in the shares but I have a put in place between now January because the waters are so choppy all over the place.

The august numbers looked amazing, simply amazing. My take is that if the commodities stop sliding and hold steady at a traditionally high price, Colombia will continue it's current growth rate despite the global head winds. What do you think?

The author of this article should explain a little bit more on details concerning the above companies. Give an example of how it is done. GT is right, it might cost someone 25 cents trying to steal a dime. Especially for beginners. Reply

HSBC hit a low on Feb.11th and I doubled my position on that date at $69.50/ADR. The low on that day was $69.25/ADR. Those shares have subsequently paid dividends totaling $3.75/ADR. I do not expect the share price to return to those levels ever.
In my opinion the ADR share price will close the year at or about $120/ADR. That price may seem overly optimistic to some but the fundamentals support my analysis. I also expect new revenue streams out of Korea and China as ventures in those areas begin to show results. It is also quite possible that there will be an announcement in the second quarter of 2009 that no further provisions for write downs will need to be made as they have been fully accounted for.
Just my opinion of course and folks should do their own homework.

The British banks have serious dividends ( at this price level ), and also do not suffer dividend withholding tax.
Is it time to get a few shares?
Or are we waiting for armageddon?
I already messed with BCS too early, but it should come right bye and bye.

Dividends in American companies are somewhat low and have no favorable tax treatment for foreigners. Canadian banks pay dividends in the 4 to 5 percent range, Canadian income trusts even more, and, for example, Amerigo Resources (ARG.TO), listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), is a Chilean copper and molybdenum mining company with good financials that pays a 6.5 cent dividend semi-annually. This amounts to an 8.72% yield that is tax-favoured in Canada and, even for non-Canadians, superior to anemic American yields. Reply

Well it works and it doesn't. It is a good strategy when market is moving higher but not too much. It worked very well this spring when european corps were paying dividends (5 to 8% in one shot) and the market was strong enough to recup the dividend payment but not strong enough to make you regret a 20% capital gain. Now, I wouldn't touch this and quarterly dividends are not high enough to give an incentive. Reply

Options trade on SJR is too thin and annualized yields are too low for me. Reply

SJR looks interesting fundamentally and technically. M* estimates its fair value at $27 (4*).

I agree that the maneuver makes little sense. It looks like a stunt or gimmick. Buy the stock, sell covered calls and collect the dividend and cap appreciation.
