- Wednesday, August 15, 2012, 2:13 PM JDS Uniphase (JDSU +8.7%) surges after beating FQ4 estimates and providing healthy guidance. During its earnings call, JDS noted demand for 40G/100G optical components is growing rapidly - a positive for Ciena (CIEN +2.8%) - and hinted it has signed a new development contract with Microsoft. MKM believes JDS is gaining component share and is attractively valued, but Needham thinks a lot still depends on Q4 carrier budgets. FNSR +5.6%. OPLK +1.9%. NPTN +4.6%. OCLR +2.4%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, August 10, 2012, 11:05 AM Goldman has launched coverage on Level 3 (LVLT +5.7%) and JDS Uniphase (JDSU +0.6%) with Buy ratings, though only the former seems to be benefiting Finisar (FNSR +0.7%) and Ciena (CIEN +0.1%) have been started at Neutral. Regarding Level 3, Goldman likes the impact of the Global Crossing acquisition on the company's balance sheet, and believes it could deliver "sustainable" free cash flow for the first time in its history. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Monday, July 30, 2012, 9:34 AM Ciena (CIEN +3%) bounces after receiving an upgrade to Hold from Jefferies' George Notter: he predicts Ciena will deliver a strong July quarter and forward guidance, and expects a stronger focus on profitability over the next 6-12 months. The volatile optical networking hardware vendor (beta of 2.2) has been whipsawed (I, II) lately by industry earnings and capex news. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 2:44 PM Juniper and Riverbed's results/guidance are stoking a rally in enterprise networking and telecom equipment stocks, many of whom have been volatile in response to earnings and capex news. CSCO +2.6%. FFIV +3.3%. CIEN +4.4%. CALX +6.7%. NTGR +4.5%. ARUN +7.3%. ERIC +2.6%. Needham, which launched coverage of Riverbed with a Strong Buy last month, is praising its strong pipeline and improving sales metrics. Jefferies likes Juniper's cost-reduction efforts. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 1:53 PM Huawei's 1H results are more proof of the tough capex environment facing wireline and mobile telecom equipment firms. Revenue rose just 5% Y/Y to CNY102.7B ($16.1B) - a notable slowdown for a company gaining share in many markets - and operating profit fell 22%. Still, Huawei is maintaining its target for 15%-20% 2012 sales growth. Rival ZTE delivered an ugly warning earlier this month, and so did Alcatel-Lucent and some U.S. vendors. Can mobile data growth drive a turnaround? Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, July 19, 2012, 12:11 PM If there's a theme to Q2 tech earnings reports so far, it's "good enough." Just as several large-caps have rallied on so-so results, beaten-down telecom equipment and optical component names are rallying on Verizon's guidance for "flat to down" 2012 capex - some feared worse guidance in light of recent warnings. CIEN +5%. ALU +6.9%. JDSU +2%. FNSR +3%. JNPR +2.8%. Nomura sees Verizon's comments about 40G/100G optical investments as a positive for Juniper and Ciena. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 10:22 AM Today's crash in Alcatel-Lucent (ALU -17.9%), the result of more ugly earnings news, is leading many to question its survival, at least without a major restructuring. Nomura's Stuart Jeffrey notes Alcatel's remarks about failing to reach its operating margin guidance suggest it will struggle to turn cash flow positive. Goldman has argued liquidity pressures could arrive by 2013. Plenty of other telecom equipment names have warned. CIEN -2.9%. TLAB -2.4%. (Q1 miss) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, July 16, 2012, 11:48 AM Some telecom equipment names slump after ZTE (ZTCOY.PK) becomes the latest vendor to warn. CIEN -3.2%. ALU -3.1%. ERIC -1.4%. Particularly worrisome may be ZTE's remarks about delayed orders from Chinese carriers, given how China, thanks to its heavy broadband spending, has remained an area of strength amidst a soft telecom capex environment. ZTE has also emerged a top-5 mobile phone vendor, thanks partly to strong Android sales. (Adtran) (Calix) (Acme Packet) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 4:31 PM Calix (CALX -10.2%) falls 23.8% AH after warning it expects Q2 revenue of $79M and EPS of $0.04, far below a consensus of $95.1M and $0.10. The broadband infrastructure provider, already hit hard by Adtran's Q2 report, blames weak service provider capex in multiple markets. The capex cuts, in turn, are blamed on macro issues and regulatory uncertainty. UBS' call on telecom capex is looking quite accurate at this point. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 10:59 AM Adtran (ADTN -14.3%) plunges after reporting Q2 revenue of $184M (down slightly Y/Y) and EPS of $0.38; the latter beat by $0.03, but the former missed by $6.2M. Much like Acme Packet, Adtran blames a tough telecom capex environment for its woes. The company is guiding for Q3 revenue to be flat to slightly up Q/Q (consensus is for a 20% increase), and says poor visibility leaves it cautious about the near-term. Down in sympathy: CIEN -7%. CALX -6.4%. TLAB -1.7%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Tuesday, June 12, 2012, 11:57 AM Ciena (CIEN +1.7%) catches a bid following positive commentary in the wake of its recent investor day. Nomura (Buy) expects Ciena's strong revenue growth and relatively fixed operating expenses to drive margin expansion, while Needham (Buy) notes Ciena remains confident about its outlook in spite of macro concerns due to the strong uptake for its 100G optical transmission gear. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Quick Ideas]

Premarket gainers: TLB +100%. MVIS +27%. GET +12%. ISR +7%. CIEN +5%.
Losers: CHTP -23%. AONE -19%. JOY -6%. Comment! [On the Move] - Thursday, May 31, 2012, 9:07 AM More on Ciena's FQ2: The company expects FQ3 revenue of $455M-$485M, in-line with a $471.1M consensus. In spite of revenue increase, FQ2 gross margin fell 170 bps Y/Y to 39.6%. Optical transmission gear made up 2/3 of revenue, whereas optical switches and carrier Ethernet switches each made up less than 7%. With 29% of Ciena's float shorted as of May 15, and shares down sharply in recent weeks, a short squeeze could occur. CIEN +5.2%. JDSU +1.5%. FNSR +1.4%. (PR) Comment! [Tech, Earnings, On the Move]
- Thursday, May 31, 2012, 7:06 AM Ciena (CIEN): FQ2 EPS of $0.04 beats by $0.07. Revenue of $477.6M (+14.3% Y/Y) beats by $30M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Tech]
