        <![CDATA[<p>Some months ago during the difficult moments of the financial crisis, <strong>Morgan Stanley (<a href='http://seekingalpha.com/symbol/ms' title='More opinion and analysis of MS'>MS</a>) </strong>(<span><a href="http://register.zacks.com/ucd/step1.php?ALERT=zrmodule&amp;t=MS&amp;ADID=ZACKS_COMM_TICKER_ZER" target="_blank">Snapshot Report</a>) issued a report forecasting a GDP contraction of 4.5% for Brazil in 2009. We always had a more benign view on emerging markets in general and Brazil in particular.<br><br>We had been stressing that: (i) the Brazilian banking system remains sound, (ii) domestic interest rates have huge room for cuts and (iii) Brazil is still a &quot;closed&quot; country which does not rely overly much on exports and imports. All this together points to a more positive economic environment in Brazil in 2009, if compared to more developed economies like those in Europe, the U.S. and Japan.</span></p>]]>

<p>Some months ago during the difficult moments of the financial crisis, <strong>Morgan Stanley (<a href='http://seekingalpha.com/symbol/ms' title='More opinion and analysis of MS'>MS</a>) </strong>(<span><a href="http://register.zacks.com/ucd/step1.php?ALERT=zrmodule&amp;t=MS&amp;ADID=ZACKS_COMM_TICKER_ZER" target="_blank">Snapshot Report</a>) issued a report forecasting a GDP contraction of 4.5% for Brazil in 2009. We always had a more benign view on emerging markets in general and Brazil in particular.<br><br>We had been stressing that: (i) the Brazilian banking system remains sound, (ii) domestic interest rates have huge room for cuts and (iii) Brazil is still a &quot;closed&quot; country which does not rely overly much on exports and imports.         <![CDATA[<p><b>My Quick <a href="http://www.altenergystocks.com/archives/2009/03/a_quick_clean_energy_tracking_portfolio.html" target="_blank">Clean Energy Tracking Portfolio</a> has solidly outperformed its benchmark... was it bad design?</b></p><p>On February 27, I used the top holdings of the (<a href="http://www.altenergystocks.com/archives/2009/03/if_a_clean_energy_mutual_fund_falls_in_the_forest_1.html" target="_blank">then six</a>) <a href="http://www.altenergystocks.com/archives/2009/02/renewable_and_alternative_energy_mutual_funds_compared_1.html" target="_blank">clean energy mutual funds</a> to design a tracking portfolio intended to <a href="http://www.altenergystocks.com/archives/2009/02/green_stocks_vs_green_funds.html" target="_blank">replicate the performance of those funds at much lower cost</a>.  If my methodology was sound, the tracking portfolio should produce returns within the range of returns of the mutual funds on which it was based. If all went well, the returns would be at the upper end of that range because of the way I chose to emphasize stocks which had underperformed over the previous three years.</p>]]>

Though this is less than the S&amp;P 500, the sector is still down around 30% for the year - which is very high for this sector. On the other hand, the best performing sector, consumer-staples, is down only 17.02%. On the global level, the SPDR SP International Utilities Sector ETF (<a href='http://seekingalpha.com/symbol/ipu' title='More opinion and analysis of IPU'>IPU</a>), started in July of this year, has a negative return of 29.09% year-to-date.</p>]]>

in tomorrow are pretty high, with articles such as this one linked here 
predicting 25% index gains for 2008 fuelling the sheep money fire (remember 
the ADRs traded in New York yesterday, but the Brazilian markets were 
closed for May Day).
