- Monday, May 6, 4:32 PM Carmike Cinemas (CKEC): Q1 EPS of -$0.20 misses by $0.26. Revenue of $130.1M misses by $0.11M. Shares -1.4% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 18, 2:08 PM Highlights from CinemaCon: 1) The debate over shortening theater release windows picks up with the displeasure of move theater operators (CNK, CKEC, IMAX, RGC, MCS, RDI) over the practice losing steam as the appeal of boosting VOD revenue entices studios. 2) Disney's (DIS) presentation was a hit with screening of both Monsters University and The Lone Ranger being well-received on top of the company's dramatic Star Wars news . 3) What's next for theaters? The success of both IMAX in international markets and new premium theaters popping up in the U.S. has operators exploring upgrades to theater complexes to add features such as bars, lounges, and restaurants. Naturally, ticket prices would be boosted to pay for it all. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 14, 4:42 PM Carmike Cinemas (CKEC): Q4 EPS of $0.43 beats by $0.17. Revenue of $146.6M beats by $2.35M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]
- Sunday, January 13, 2:42 PM Big screen stocks still have upside notwithstanding blockbuster gains in 2012, Barron's says. Stocks it likes: Regal Entertainment (RGC), an industry stalwart with a 5.9% yield. Cinemark (CNK), which yields 3% and collects 1/3 of its revenue in LatAm. Carmike (CKEC), which pays no dividend "but has the brightest growth prospects of the three." And EPR Properties (EPR), a theater REIT with a 6.5% dividend. Comment! [Quick Ideas, Consumer]
- Monday, November 12, 2012, 12:53 PM Theater stocks Carmike Cinemas (CKEC +2.4%) and Cinemark Holdings (CNK +1%) trade modestly higher after the new James Bond movie brings moviegoers flocking to theaters over the weekend. The bigger picture: The sector is off to a good Q4 with traffic up more than 20% quarter-to-date after Q3 saw a slump of 7% partially tied to the Colorado theater shooting, according to Cinemark CEO Tim Warner (earnings CC transcript). Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, November 1, 2012, 10:12 AM Carmike Cinemas (CKEC): Q3 EPS of $0.13 misses by $0.03. Revenue of $127.4M (-4.5% Y/Y) misses by $3M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]
- Monday, October 15, 2012, 10:21 AM Film producer Angus Finney is the latest industry insider to predict the death of movie theaters with his vision that it's only months - not years - before people make watching movies on their tablets and mobile devices their top preference. Is the clock ticking for operators such as CNK, RGC, CKEC or theater systems player IMAX. 10 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 12:05 PM Time Warner Cable (TWC +0.8%) continues the new industry trend of trimming the time between theater releases of films and digital availability, saying Snow White & The Hunstman will is now available through its On Demand service. By beating Netflix (NFLX +0.2%) to the market by a full four weeks, the company has a nice advantage over its rival. The bigger question: Are theater operators such CNK, RGC, CKEC, RDI, and MCS seeing an effect from earlier digital releases? Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, August 17, 2012, 5:43 PM Carmike Cinemas (CKEC) issues an official statement in response to an earlier reported bomb threat, saying that on the evening of August 16, it received a non-specific telephoned bomb threat at its corporate offices in Columbus, GA. The company alerted community law enforcement officials and the FBI. Searches have been completed at the affected theatres and nothing was found. All theatres affected by the threat have been checked and deemed safe for use, and a federal investigation is underway. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, August 17, 2012, 1:18 PM Carmike Cinemas (CKEC -1.1%) recovers a bit of the ground lost after shares spiked downward following a report that the company received a bomb threat warning bombs may have been planted in theaters across the country. According to local reports, Carmike theaters are now being searched by police and bomb squads. [Update: Police say no bombs have been found] 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, August 3, 2012, 8:09 AM Data from research firm NBG suggests that two weeks after the deadly theater shooting in Colorado, the tragedy continues to influence moviegoers plans to see movies and is holding down box office totals. Though analysts don't forecast a new long-term trend is in place, this weekend's debut of new movies Total Recall from Sony (SNE) and 20th Century Fox's (NWS) Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days could be impacted. Operators: CNK, RGC, CKEC. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 5:34 PM Carmike Cinemas (CKEC): Q2 EPS of $0.39 beats by $0.11. Revenue of $136.3M (+3.7% Y/Y) in-line. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]
- Monday, July 30, 2012, 7:51 AM The weekend box office numbers show moviegoers returned to theaters following last weekend's dropoff after the shooting tragedy in Colorado. Time Warner's (TWX) The Dark Knight Rises led the weekend tally, grossing $64.1M to take its 10-day domestic haul to $289.1M. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, July 25, 2012, 9:41 AM Movie theater stocks have fallen since last week's deadly shooting: Cinemark (CNK), owner of the theater where the shooting took place, has slid 6.2% since Friday, and RGC, CKEC and IMAX also have drifted lower. Investors fear the tragedy will lead to higher security costs at theaters, even metal detectors, or worse... movie goers could simply stay home. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 1:07 PM Estimates for The Dark Knight Rises keep getting pushed higher by both Wall Street analysts and industry watchers. While IMAX and Time Warner (TWX +0.5%) are the two obvious beneficiaries, theater operators such as CNK, CKEC, RGC, and MCS may also see strong results this summer as hot weather outside helps keep box office sales inside churning. 3 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, May 7, 2012, 4:30 PM Carmike Cinemas (CKEC): Q1 EPS of $0.26 beats by $0.15. Revenue of $131M (+37% Y/Y) beats by $13M. (PR) Comment! [Earnings]
