Exploring Joel Greenblatt’s Magic Formula for Picking Value Stocks [view article]
The www.magicformulafunds..../ site says "MagicFormulaInve... while looking great and easy, is simply not accurate. Professor Greenblatt’s back tests provided accurate results, however, the person responsible for maintaining the website simply isn’t doing it right.Stocks that should be ranked 356 or 253 are showing up in the top 30 as the website doesn’t use an accurate data source. Collectors Universe Worth Collecting In Your Portfolio [view article]
The only advice I could give you is, which coin grading companys they own, NGC, PCGS are the top listings, follow by ICG, ANAS, then it goes down from there. PCGS & NGC , are the most use by coin dealers. They are trusted by big dealers & auctions cos by far over the others. You can go to NGC.COM, I would check Numismatics News.com for more info. Good luck, there are millions of coins that are sent to them for grading at a average of $30.00 a coin, or big dealers get a discount of about half. Hope that will help you. Reply

Hasn't this stock always been a poor secondary play to eBay? I'd have thought it's better just to buy eBay. Reply

Exploring Joel Greenblatt’s Magic Formula for Picking Value Stocks [view article]
I have followed Joel Greenblatt for a few years. His first book, "How to Become a Stock Market Genius", was by far most informative than the "Magic Formula" (corney title but good book). Arn't we all looking for good companies at a cheap price? Isn't that the name of the game?
I have developed a similar screen that I use to sort these companies out. It focuses on FCF to EV and adds growth as a factor. Value is created by the ROIC being higher than the cost of capital. I also look for stocks with EBITDA margins either high (and likely to stay there) or improving.
There are a few others, but that is the jest of it. Good hunting!

Great question David. Collector’s ASP’s have actually risen steadily over the past several years. The reason that they dropped in Q1 was due to a program called “first strike Reply

Collectors is not a proxy for Ebay’s overall business, for example US vs. International or categories outside of coins, autographs, stamps and cards. However Collectors, like eBay, is an excellent play on the overall shift to online commerce and trading where there is a greater need for Collectors third party authentication services. To give you a sense currently on eBay there are 7,651 PCGS (Collectors brand name in coins) graded coins, which represents only 11% of the 68,011 coins now on eBay. What is impressive is that last year at this time roughly only 7% of eBay's coins were graded by PCGS. I expect Collectors to continue to further penetrate the eBay market, which is a proxy for Collectors growth in overall internet based transactions. Reply

This is great analysis. Thank you, ValMan, whoever you are. It would be great if Internet Stock Blog could provide more such opinions from hedge fund managers. Anonymous would be ok. Reply

Collectors Universe stated in its Q2 call that the average fee per unit graded fell sequentially from $12.14 to $11.88. It seems that the reason is a shift in revenue mix: authentication fees for coins average $14.22; sports $7.31; and the autographs and stamps $22.68. ValMan - can you explain why this isn't a negative? Reply

But CLCT doesn't have the international exposure that EBAY has. So is it really a proxy for EBAY? Reply
