- Thursday, June 14, 2012, 5:02 PM Comcast (CMCSA) TV subscribers can now watch The Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney Junior online and through iOS devices. The announcement comes five months after Comcast and Disney (DIS) inked a broad-reaching content distribution deal, as the companies try to minimize the impact of cord-cutting. Disney already provides online/mobile access to ESPN content to subscribers of various pay-TV providers. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Thursday, June 14, 2012, 7:05 AM Comcast's (CMCSA) NBC lands $1.8B in ad commitments for its upcoming TV season during the upfront season, with higher ad rates helping lift this year's haul higher than the $1.7B brought in last year. The ratings success of The Voice helped the network stay level with rival Fox and not lose any more ground to leaders CBS and ABC. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 9:59 AM Disney's (DIS -0.7%) ESPN has seen the initial games of the European Championship soccer games draw 4X as many viewers as the last go-around four years ago. The solid ratings are notable after speculation swirled about that Twitter - along with other social media options - would cut into viewership and with Comcast's (CMCSA -1.9%) NBC planning on big numbers out of the London Olympic Games. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 5:54 AM CBS (CBS) has reportedly attracted around $2.7B in upfront ad sales for the TV season that starts in September, similar to last year. The network leader enjoyed an ad rate increase of 8%-10% but sold less inventory. All the major networks are now believed to have mostly completed their upfront dealings, gaining CPM increases of 5.5%-9%. Comment! [Consumer, Top Stories]
- Wednesday, June 13, 2012, 4:09 AM The Justice Department has reportedly launched a broad antitrust investigation into whether cable companies are acting improperly to suppress competition from online video. DoJ officials have spoken to several online video providers, including Netflix (NFLX), and are said to have questioned Comcast (CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (TWC) and others about issues like data caps. 4 Comments [Consumer, Top Stories]
- Monday, June 11, 2012, 9:22 AM Comcast (CMCSA) denies a NYT story it is considering a bid for BSkyB (BSYBY.PK). "This is complete rubbish, speculation, and inaccurate," says a spokesperson. The Times says it is standing by the story. Comment! [M&A, Consumer]
- Friday, June 8, 2012, 4:15 PM Comcast (CMCSA) is in the preliminary stages of exploring if British Sky Broadcasting (BSYBY.PK), which is 39% owned by News Corporation (NWSA), might be an acquisition target. Comment! [M&A]
- Friday, June 8, 2012, 1:20 PM Execs at Comcast-owned (CMCSA +0.4%) NBC need another idea after popular thoroughbred I'll Have Another drops out of the Belmont Stakes due to injury. Not only was the horse's bid for the elusive Triple Crown expected to provide a ratings blowout, but the network planned to heavily promote its upcoming Olympics programming with its captive audience. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 1:02 PM The London Olympics will air live via YouTube for viewers in Asia and Africa on ten different IOC channels in what makes for a nearly perfect demonstration of the risks that broadcast networks face in the future to streaming options. In the U.S., Comcast's (CMCSA +1.9%) NBC will also offer a live broadcast of events as it tries to recoup part of its multi-billion investment for the rights to the games. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, June 4, 2012, 6:45 PM While the newspaper industry has been decimated by the Internet, the TV industry has been mostly unscathed. But that may be changing, thinks Henry Blodget, after reviewing recent Nielsen data. Cable ratings have fallen sharply since July, and a Nielsen global survey found a 700 bps Y/Y drop in the number of respondents claiming to have watched TV at home in the last month. Other data suggests TV viewing is holding up well. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, June 4, 2012, 6:56 AM Comcast's (CMCSA) Universal Studios scored a hit at the box office over the weekend with Snow White and the Huntsman bringing in a respectable $56.3M. The mark looks especially attractive given the movie's low budget of $170M and the recent disappointment the studio saw with the numbers from Battleship. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 31, 2012, 6:45 AM Broadcasting companies including News Corp (NWSA,NWS), Disney (DIS), CBS, and Comcast (CMCSA) go to court to stop an Internet TV startup from launching. In a copyright infringement lawsuit, the group alleges mobile TV provider Aereo of copying and retransmitting their programming over the Internet unlawfully. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 1:11 PM Disney (DIS -0.5%) says it will launch a mobile app shortly that will allow Comcast (CMCSA -0.8%) TV subscribers to watch the Disney Channel from mobile devices. A similar initiative for sports channel ESPN already exists for select cable companies. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 25, 2012, 7:14 AM More on Comcast's (CMCSA) bid for MSNBC.com (previous): An exec with NBC News confirms that discussions and due diligence are ongoing in the deal for Comcast to buy out Microsoft's 50% stake in the website. A key point for negotiations centers on MSNBC.com securing strategic placement on the MSN.com website. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 24, 2012, 11:40 PM In the next step after Dish Network's (DISH) pre-emptive legal strike, Fox (NWS), NBC (CMCSA) and CBS have now all sued the satellite provider over its commercial-skipping "AutoHop" technology, claiming copyright and licensing violations. Subtle questions over who controls the skipping could dictate whether Dish faces the fate of ReplayTV: being sued out of existence. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 24, 2012, 4:58 PM Comcast's (CMCSA) NBCUniversal subsidiary is in "serious negotiations" to buy Microsoft's (MSFT) stake in MSNBC.com, and could gain full control of the site by this summer, multiple sources tell Adweek. Such a deal could be another example of Microsoft's efforts to reduce the giant losses posted by its Online Services division. 5 Comments [Tech, Consumer, M&A]
