- Thursday, June 13, 12:02 PM A deal which will see DirecTV (DTV +0.1%) purchase Hulu (CMCSA, DIS, NWS) by the end of the month is imminent, sources tell PandoDaily. The acquisition would fill a large void in DirecTV's offerings which would be difficult to build from ground up and also allow it to play some defense against Hulu falling into a rival's hands. 3 Comments [Consumer, M&A]
- Thursday, June 6, 11:13 AM AT&T (T) has reportedly joined the ranks of companies weighing bids for Hulu (DIS, CMCSA, NWS): sources tell Kara Swisher Ma Bell is in talks with a company run by former News Corp. COO Peter Chermin to make a joint offer for the online video site. But before investors start mulling the potential U-verse and mobile implications, it should be noted Yahoo, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, and Guggenheim Partners have also been named as interested parties in recent weeks. (previous) 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, Consumer]
- Sunday, June 2, 2:53 AM Satellite operator DirecTV (DTV) and two other unidentified suitors have reportedly bid over $1B each to acquire Hulu. The owners of the online video service, which are News Corp (NWS), Disney (DIS) and Comcast (CMCSA), have received seven offers for the company, and intend to cut the shortlist down over the next few weeks. Previous reports have said that other bidders include Yahoo (YHOO), KKR (KKR) and Time Warner Cable (TWC). 5 Comments [Consumer, M&A, Top Stories]
- Friday, May 17, 4:11 PM DirecTV (DTV) has joined the ranks of companies weighing a bid for Hulu (DIS, NWS, CMCSA), with an eye towards expanding its arsenal of TV Everywhere content, the WSJ reports. The scoop shortly follows a report Time Warner Cable and other MSOs are talking about a possible bid. Comment! [Tech, Consumer, M&A]
- Thursday, May 16, 1:29 PM More on Time Warner Cable (TWC -1.8%) - Hulu (previous): If Time Warner Cable takes a minority stake in Hulu it will become strange bedfellows with rival Comcast (CMCSA -1%) which owns roughly a third of the company - but the combination could energize the concept of nationally branded TV Everywhere platform, analysts say. Sources indicate another pay-TV company is also considering making a bid for Hulu. Stay tuned. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Tuesday, May 7, 9:19 PM Marissa Mayer (YHOO) held a preliminary talk with Hulu (DIS, CMCSA, NWS) execs about a bid for the video site, "numerous sources" tell Kara Swisher. Amazon (AMZN), Guggenheim Partners, and ex-News Corp. COO Peter Chermin (previous) are also said to be weighing bids. Yahoo was one of the companies offering to buy Hulu back in 2011, and with the French government having thwarted its Dailymotion bid, Hulu and its 4M+ premium subs might not be a bad backup plan. But much likely depends on the content rights Hulu's risk-averse old media owners are willing to give. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A, Consumer]
- Tuesday, February 12, 4:38 PM Comcast (CMCSA) will pay $16.7B for GE's 49% stake in NBC Universal, AP reports. 4 Comments [Breaking News, M&A]
- Monday, February 4, 3:19 AM KKR (KKR) and Permira Advisers are reportedly considering their options for their 53% stake in ProSiebenSat.1 Media - which has a market cap of €5.43B - including selling their shares to another firm or on the market. Although the German broadcaster is having to cope with falling ad revenues, potential suitors could include Time Warner (TWX), Comcast (CMCSA) and News Corp (NWS). 1 Comment [Financials, Consumer, M&A]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 12:30 PM In an FAQ about the Sprint (S -1%) deal, Clearwire (CLWR +0.9%) hints the transaction could lead to layoffs. Meanwhile, activist investor Crest Financial, which is staunchly opposed to the deal, says it now owns 8.34% of Clearwire's Class A shares, up from a prior 6.62%. But with shares trading nearly 3% below Sprint's $2.97/share offer price, the Street isn't currently betting on a higher bid arriving. Comcast and Intel say they'll sell to Sprint at $2.97 regardless of whether the deal goes through. (more) 5 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Sunday, October 14, 2012, 6:10 AM Providence Equity Partners has reportedly sold its 10% holding in Hulu back to the online video service for $200M in a transaction that values the company at $2B. Hulu is taking a loan to fund the acquisition, which leaves News Corp. (NWS), Comcast (CMCSA) and Disney (DIS) as the remaining owners. Separately, Hulu's CEO is poised to receive $40M. Comment! [Top Stories, M&A, Consumer, Tech]
- Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 5:30 AM The FCC and DOJ are preparing to authorize Verizon Wireless' (VZ) $3.9B acquisition of airwaves from several cable companies, including Comcast (CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (TWC), the WSJ reports. In return, the companies will limit the scope and length of agreements to sell each other's services in deals that had raised concerns that the companies wouldn't compete for Internet subscribers. 1 Comment [Tech, Consumer, M&A]
- Monday, July 16, 2012, 3:29 AM NBC parent Comcast (CMCSA) has bought out Microsoft's (MSFT) 50% stake in MSNBC.com, and has already rebranded the site as NBCNews.com. Financial terms weren't disclosed, but sources say the stake changed hands for ~$300M. (previously) 6 Comments [Tech, Consumer, M&A, Top Stories]
- Thursday, July 12, 2012, 2:03 PM Easy come, easy go. Pandora (P +3.9%) gives back a chunk of its gains as a source claims Comcast (CMCSA) isn't bidding on the Internet radio leader, as was rumored. 36.7% of Pandora's float was shorted as of June 15, making short squeezes easy to come by. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A, Consumer]
- Thursday, July 12, 2012, 1:26 PM Rumors of a potential takeover of Pandora (P +5.9%) center on Comcast (CMCSA -1.1%), although the marriage of the two companies and distinct personalities doesn't quite make sense to industry watchers. Shares of Pandora are off session highs, but still trade strong on heavy volume. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move, M&A, Tech]
- Monday, June 11, 2012, 9:22 AM Comcast (CMCSA) denies a NYT story it is considering a bid for BSkyB (BSYBY.PK). "This is complete rubbish, speculation, and inaccurate," says a spokesperson. The Times says it is standing by the story. Comment! [M&A, Consumer]
- Friday, June 8, 2012, 4:15 PM Comcast (CMCSA) is in the preliminary stages of exploring if British Sky Broadcasting (BSYBY.PK), which is 39% owned by News Corporation (NWSA), might be an acquisition target. Comment! [M&A]
