Why Cable and WiMax Shouldn't Mix [view article]
To srhise & COCOViper, must be "Sprextel" or Clearwire employees.I'm at 2GHz daily on my VZW EVDO-Rev. A modem (feel free to let me know if you want the Speedtest sent to you). Can't vouch for HSDPA (in my post above I never once mentioned either as 4G technology, just that they were TRUE mobile broadband networks) but HSDPA+ which is available now (www.wirelessweek.com/A...) is more than capable to culp with supposed WiMax speeds until LTE or UMB is available.
All I'm saying is the WiMax is still an unproven technology that may be risky for a struggling company like Sprint to take on (every article you'll find on it mentions that...except for the few companies committed to deploying it). I'm not saying "live in a cave" & give up 4G, just be smart about it. Go ahead & make the "Beta" vs. "VHS" decision quickly & find out where you're at (just an example of making the wrong decision). The Music Industry’s New Extortion Scheme [view article]
I think such a fee is only fair and reasonable. A fee like this might have mitigated or even prevented the DRM/pirating nightmare that's been plaguing society for years. It doesn't have to be exorbitant, either, to be useful. It doesn't even have to be the nightmare (ie, "extortion") it's alleged it will become.Bottom line, there's no perfect system, and artists deserve to be paid. Period. But I agree that the labels are a huge part of the problem. Implement the fee, have the funds managed by BMI/ASCAP/et al, and leave the labels out of it if possible. Reply
Is a Music 'Tax' Paid to ISPs the Answer? [view article]
I think such a fee is only fair and reasonable. You point out yourself the precedent. A fee like this might have mitigated or even prevented the DRM/pirating nightmare that's been plaguing society for years. It doesn't have to be exorbitant, either, to be useful... so your hyperbole can be stricken. ; ) ReplyWhy Cable and WiMax Shouldn't Mix [view article]
Everyone’s comments above (except Geddy who seems to know nothing about 3G (i.e. EVDO-A) vs. 4G (WiMax)) hit the nail on the head.WiMax has its problems, and so does Clearwire and Sprint- but if anyone thinks tech boundaries get pushed without problems, it seems they have been asleep in a cave for the last 100 years. Similar problems were faced by both companies and tech in the deployment of everything from the original POTS telephone system up to the continued roll out of wired broadband today.
To the victors belong the spoils, and while it is risky, the best way to BE victorious is to take risks and fix the problems as they come; not sell off and run away because it's difficult. That's called refusing to compete and it lands you companies like Matrox, IBM's former PC division, VIA, etc...All companies that were once the best in their respective markets but as soon as they got heavy competition and problems; they surrendered and now just try to survive.

Over-the Air-Broadcasting Is Alive and Well [view article]
Great article. I've been viewing free, over-the-air digital television for almost a year now, with no cable bill. I am convinced if more people were aware of what they could receive with free, over-the-air digital television, more people would cancel cable/satellite and enjoy the freedom.Combine digital television with internet entertainment, and what else do you need? with waterworks... Eli's offerings are in with the best. Just ad a yiddish converter for level 2 or above. Most of us pantheistic's have a basic working understanding, like pantheistic schmantheistic.... ReplyWhy Cable and WiMax Shouldn't Mix [view article]
Couple comments:1) Sprint needs to go back to basics & worry about keeping their existing customers (losing by record numbers) before trying to branch out in all different directions.
2) CLWR is losing money faster than they bring it in...not positive cash flow by any means (check their financials before spouting off EBITDA nonsense).
3) Don't we already have mobile broadband networks (EVDO-A, HSDPA)??? srhise is acting like this will be the 1st. You might also want to look up the numbers to build a nationwide network my friend. 8-12 billion actually seems low, especially when using 2.5GHz spectrum where sites are MUCH closer (thus more sites) than even the 1.9GHz spectrum (& certainly closer than 850Mhz cellular carriers use).
4) Everyone not seen the 700Mhz auction results? We're talking prime spectrum for the incumbent cellular carriers where LTE is already proven to be better than WiMax. Reply
Comcast, Time Warner: The Broadband Salad Bar [view article]
bck136: I don't think option 1 will ever happen; wall street won't let them backpedal at this point. I'm saying it's option 2 as you suggest, but that their net neutrality ploy will largely fail, leaving option 2a (tiered service). 2a is sort of a half-assed version of your option 3. ReplySchmeidler
Jim Cramer's 10 Predictions for 2008 [view article]
Stop bashing on this Cramer guy. It's pointless and not contributing to any direction on how to treat his stock predictions. If my opnion about him helps, I see him as someone who is simply motivated by his fearlessness of the markets. He survived hell when he was working professionally as a hedge fund manager, and now, he lingers around as a quasi semi-retiree because he feels that this is the kind of enjoyment (for him, at least) that he should have had in the first place when he worked on wall street. He also seems to have some kind of obsession with trading, which he readily would admit to. If you read his book "Confessions of a Street Addict", he will formulate to you $ by $ on how he made his millions. He gives you all the trades (generally by sector, or the maket as a whole), the time, and even the payout $$. This guy had a lot of guts (or the stupidity of a dare devil). He would borrow VERY heavily and cash in on big one or two day payoffs. His timing of the market was everything. Plus the fact that he is probably crazy helps him. good lord i hope they never go to per Byte pricing, my bill would be astronomical, since i bittorrent so much :) ReplyComcast, Time Warner: The Broadband Salad Bar [view article]
I suppose a third option would be to simply stop promising speeds they can't effectively deliver, but we all know that won't work. All of a sudden lowering people's Internet connection speeds would make the age of our nation's communications infrastructure impossible to deny. So, the communications companies look for scapegoats...
