- Wednesday, June 19, 2:26 PM WatchESPN (DIS) and HBO Go (TWX) have been added to the Apple TV for paying subscribers in a move that will significantly increase the reach of the streaming services. The development also represents another small leak for the cable/satellite industry (CHTR, TWC, CMCSA, DTV, DISH) as it tries to keep its content dike in place. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, June 17, 2:39 PM Out with the old. The Netflix-DreamWorks Animation deal signals an important change in the way content is distributed, according to industry watchers The most important part of the deal is that it focus on exclusive fresh content for Netflix (NFLX +6.8%) from DreamWorks (DWA +4%) - instead of just filling up a library with older titles. The big picture: A bidding war for new films from Hollywood studios (LGF, SNE, VIA, CMCSA, DIS) could help the industry maximize profits. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg called it (I, II) last week when they predicted giant upheaval for the film industry. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, June 17, 9:21 AM Comcast (CMCSA) is upgraded by Raymond James to a Strong Buy rating. A price target of $46 from the investment firm implies 16% upside potential. CMCSA +2% premarket. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, June 14, 1:49 PM Pres. Obama gives his support to a plan to allow large chunks of government-owned spectrum good for mobile (1700 and 1800 MHz. bands) and Wi-Fi (5 GHz. bands) use to be shared by federal agencies and U.S. carriers. The feds would get priority, but carriers could use the spectrum at other times. The NTIA has been given 6 months to come up with tests to guarantee feasibility. Comcast (CMCSA), which is hungry for more Wi-Fi spectrum, is applauding the move, but mobile carriers (VZ, T, S) haven't been crazy about the idea, arguing the logistics will be tough. Could they also be worried about the spectrum enabling competition? (fact sheet - .pdf) 2 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, June 14, 12:27 PM Comcast's (CMCSA -0.4%) NBCUniversal launches a new version of its video on demand service in the U.K. and Ireland. The library of titles has been expanded and more devices can be used for the service which hopes to compete with local streaming options from Netflix and Amazon. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, June 14, 7:47 AM NBC Entertainment (CMCSA) president Jennifer Salke says management at the network has two years to turn around its primetime schedule to pull itself out of its ratings morass. New shows on the network will be promoted on The Voice but will then need to stand on their own, notes the exec. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, June 14, 4:47 AM Intel (INTC) is reportedly encountering difficulty in signing up programming deals for its upcoming online TV service, with major media companies such as Disney (DIS), Time Warner (TWX), Viacom (VIA), News Corp (NWS) and Comcast (CMCSA) yet to sign on. Pressure from cable TV providers such as Time Warner (TWC) is one reason, as is a fear of damaging the current lucrative ecosystem that the content and service providers enjoy. 22 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, June 13, 3:39 PM The glass half full: George Lucas and Steven Spielberg weren't sounding the death knell for the movie industry when they warned of an implosion but a paradigm shift away from multiplex theaters (CKEC, CNK, IMAX, RGC). When the day comes when mega-budget films from top studios (CMCSA, DIS, TWX, LGF, SNE, DWA) bomb at the box office, look for new mediums at home to emerge as first-run options. "There has never been more exciting potential," notes Spielberg. (video) 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, June 13, 12:02 PM A deal which will see DirecTV (DTV +0.1%) purchase Hulu (CMCSA, DIS, NWS) by the end of the month is imminent, sources tell PandoDaily. The acquisition would fill a large void in DirecTV's offerings which would be difficult to build from ground up and also allow it to play some defense against Hulu falling into a rival's hands. 3 Comments [Consumer, M&A]
- Thursday, June 13, 6:00 AM Time Warner Cable (TWC) is reportedly one of the most aggressive of the incumbent TV broadcasters that are trying to strangle the emergence of Internet competitors at birth. The broadcasters are trying to prevent media companies from selling their content to the likes of Intel (INTC) and others, including through the use of financial incentives and penalties, and contract clauses that forbid the sale of channels to Internet distributors. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 12, 1:47 PM Executives with cable companies (CHTR, CMCSA, TWC, DISH, DTV) made it crystal clear during yesterday's National Cable & Telecommunications Association meeting that they will go to great lengths to protect original content. The group says it has contracts in place which will provide incentives for media outlets to limit content for online pay-TV services. What to watch: A report from BTIG makes the case the FTC needs to investigate the anti-competitive practice. If the agency does get involved, it could open up the web TV industry for the likes of Apple, Intel, and Google. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Tuesday, June 11, 12:09 PM More from Comcast's (CMCSA -0.4%) presentation at the NCTA convention (previous): The company unveiled a new X2 platform which allow a new set-top box to save shows online. CEO Brian Roberts spent a lot of time showing off a new channel guide that resembles an Internet browser. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 11, 10:56 AM Heard during Comcast's (CMCSA -1.1%) presentation at the NCTA convention: 1) The future of TV will be more "interactive" with anything you want on any device, according to CEO Brian Roberts. 2) On binge viewing, Roberts says the concept helps brings targeted advertising to video on demand. 3) Can cable companies keep up with broadband services like Google Fiber? The exec runs a Xfinity speed test on the spot to show that a focus on speed plays to the company's strength. He promises new innovation shortly. 4) Due to the emergence of the cloud, Roberts promises TV will change more in the next five years than it did in the last fifty years. (webcast) Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, June 10, 9:34 AM Universal (CMCSA) film The Purge soared past estimates to rake in $36.4M during its opening weekend. The studio produced the film for just $3M, but used a clever marketing strategy to shock industry watchers. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, June 10, 7:54 AM Comcast (CMCSA) announces plans to expand the number of WiFi access points for its customers through a new neighborhood hotspot program. The service will be called "Xfinitywifi" and will be free for Comcast cable service customers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Northern Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, June 6, 11:13 AM AT&T (T) has reportedly joined the ranks of companies weighing bids for Hulu (DIS, CMCSA, NWS): sources tell Kara Swisher Ma Bell is in talks with a company run by former News Corp. COO Peter Chermin to make a joint offer for the online video site. But before investors start mulling the potential U-verse and mobile implications, it should be noted Yahoo, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, and Guggenheim Partners have also been named as interested parties in recent weeks.
