CMG vs. ETF Alternatives
Company Description
Steve Ells, Founder, Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer, started Chipotle with the idea that food served fast did not have to be a typical fast food experience. Today, Chipotle continues to offer a focused menu of burritos, tacos, burrito bowls (a burrito without the tortilla) and salads... More

- Tuesday, January 22, 1:44 PM Analysts warn that with the economy so fragile and pricing competition fierce it will hard for restaurants to pass on the higher wholesale beef prices that are forecast down to consumers. Though quick-service chains will toy with their menus (more chicken) and try to use forward purchase contracts to lower costs, the impact of last year's drought could take a few seasons to reverse. 6 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, January 17, 12:45 PM Tidbits from Chipotle's (CMG +2.2%) presentation at the ICR XChange conference: 1) Execs say the company might increase menu prices in 2013 with dairy and beef costs pressuring margins. No timetable is given, although the middle of the year looks to be the likeliest time period. 2) Catering services will be rolled out over the next few months. 3) On Q4, the company says 60 new restaurants were opened and the company saw its margins fall 150 bps to 24.6%. (webcast) 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, January 16, 2:37 PM Chipotle (CMG -5.5%) sees the catering business as a way to light a fire back under its same-store sales after watching rival Panera succeed in the area. The restaurant operator will begin the service in Colorado next week before rolling it in other markets over the next few months. Comment! [Consumer]

Premarket gainers: GNW +10%. TTMI +7%. VRA +7%.
Losers: CMG -8%. CIE -7%. CRS -6%. Comment! [On the Move] - Wednesday, January 16, 7:55 AM Shares of Chipotle (CMG) shed 10.7% in premarket trading after the company estimated its Q4 profit would fall well-below the estimate of analysts. Analysts think Chipotle's warning on food costs could cut a wide swath across the quick-service restaurant sector with the introduction of more dollar value menus making price hikes trickier. 1 Comment
- Wednesday, January 16, 7:18 AM William Blair thinks it was food inflation behind the weak Chipotle (CMG) Q4 results and warns comparable-store sales could bottom out at 1% in Q1 before the company's price hikes start to turn things around. Despite the hiccup, analysts keep Chipotle rated at Outperform due to its strong business model. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, January 16, 3:02 AM Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) estimates Q4 EPS at $1.92-$1.97, below consensus of $2.09. Revenue +17% to 699.2M, above Street forecasts of $690.7M. Comparable sales +3.8%, operating-profit margin -1.5 percentage points to 24.6%. Opened 60 restaurants. Although food costs increased more than expected in Q4, "we're optimistic that food inflation will level off in 2013," says co-CEO Monty Moran. (PR) 1 Comment [Earnings, Consumer]
- Wednesday, January 9, 6:50 AM Hedgeye says current employment trends show a potential deceleration of employment growth in the casual dining restaurant sector as compared to the broader economy. According to the firm, the data suggests a possible slowing of casual dining sales as a result. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, January 4, 8:50 AM Chipotle (CMG) gets a lift from Miller Tabak with a solid upgrade to a Buy rating and fresh $360 price target. The investment firm makes the stock its top restaurant pick for 2013 on its thesis that higher menu prices and a rollout of a soft corn tortilla will be major drivers for improved Chipotle traffic and margins this year. CMG inactive premarket, but a mini-rally could be on tap with another firm taking the anti-Einhorn side of the CMG trade. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, January 3, 11:23 AM Taco Bell's (YUM +0.4%) Facebook page displays an enticing tease indicating the company could be working on a Cool Ranch variation of its Doritos Locos Taco to possibly launch later this year. The trend is something to watch for investors of Chipotle (CMG +0.6%) with plenty of bears (first Einhorn, now Jefferies) pitching the case Taco Bell is grabbing market share from Chipotle due to its new Cantina Bell menu. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, January 3, 9:21 AM Miller Tabak raises its price target on Chipotle (CMG) to $360 from $335 while maintaining a solid Buy rating on the restaurant operator. Meanwhile, Jefferies has the other side of the trade, noting pressure from Taco Bell will pressure sales and margins. CMG -1.5% premarket. 4 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 12:45 PM JPMorgan takes a positive tone on Chipotle (CMG +2.5%) after meeting face to face with execs at an investor event. The restaurant operator may shift to more traditional marketing and the slowdown in comparable restaurant sales growth is attributable to a cautious consumer rather the presence of the new Taco Bell menu, according to the investment firm. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, December 4, 2012, 9:09 AM The restaurant sector is on watch after a profit warning from Darden Restaurants points to weakness, not in Europe or China, but at home in the U.S. While increased promotional activity in the sector is behind part of the slip from Darden, the bigger question is why are sales so weak for big players if consumer confidence is supposedly bouncing back? 12 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 4:44 PM Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) adds $100M to the existing $100M share repurchase plan announced a month ago. The company has bought back about $40M in stock since that Oct. 18 announcement. The combined plans amount to about 2.4% of the float. Shares +1.3% AH. (PR) Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, November 6, 2012, 12:09 PM Chipotle (CMG +5.6%) moves higher after catching an upgrade from Bank of America to Buy from Hold. The firm notes CMG trades at a 30% discount to its 5-year average valuation. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 11:25 AM Fast-food restaurant operators such as Dunkin' Brands (DNKN +0.6%), Chipotle (CMG +0.1%), and McDonald's (MCD -0.1%)) could ride out Hurricane Sandy a bit better than some of the forecasts calling for a significant drop in Q4 sales, according to analysis from Miller Tabak. Lost revenue from the past week in affected areas could be offset by evacuation route stores picking up extra traffic and relief workers coming in with few dining options. Names to watch: Ruby Tuesday (RT +1.4%) with close to 44% of its outlets in the hurricane zone, Brinker International (EAT -1.2%) at 32.6%, Panera Bread (PNRA -1.6%) with 32.6%, and Cheesecake Factor (CAKE +0.3%) sitting at 28.2%.
