- Wednesday, January 26, 2011, 2:34 PM Dell (DELL +0.6%) CEO Michael Dell has the last laugh on Hewlett-Packard (HPQ -0.3%), claiming it paid too much for 3Par - $2.35B. Dell "showed a good discipline" in bowing out of the bidding - then buying Compellent (CML). Dell wants more deals "in software, data centers, cloud computing, storage and virtualization." 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 18, 2011, 1:43 PM Analysts like EMC's (EMC +0.8%) new VNX line of lower-cost storage gear, believing it can simplify and strengthen its small-to-medium business strategy. The VNX offering will "catalyze growth in EMC’s midrange as this segment had been exhibiting weakness lately," notes Capstone Investments. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, December 31, 2010, 2:47 PM Gleacher & Co.'s crystal ball says hot areas in 2011 include hosted and managed apps, solid state storage, and storage and server virtualization. Gleacher also claims 2010's best performing stocks were ones with high revenue growth. They were F5 Networks (FFIV), up 150%, VMWare (VMW), up 112%, NetApp (NTAP), up 60%, and Apple (AAPL), up 54%. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, December 31, 2010, 1:19 PM In some ways, 2010 was good for storage, but "2011 will be a great year," given the growth of cloud services, says one optimist. Storage middleware and flash solid state drive products will also sell well. But margins will drop as storage becomes more of a commodity in this much-consolidated industry. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, December 23, 2010, 3:46 PM With NetApp (NTAP -0.4%) trading near 10-year highs, option traders are "positioning for downside," says optionMonster. NetApp is up more than 60% this year, and close to its 52-week high of $57.96. Thus, the firm "may be reaching the end of its long run and will be ready to pull back soon." 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, December 22, 2010, 12:46 PM Dell is -0.1% after announcing the buyout of online medical archive service provider InSite One, based in Connecticut. Dell sees the firm's storage-as-a-service platform supporting non-medical customers, as well. The terms weren't disclosed. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, December 20, 2010, 4:21 PM Apparently 'feeling chipper' about Dell's (DELL) future, CEO Michel Dell has bought $100M worth of the firm's shares, according to an SEC filing. Dell and his family now own about 263M shares, worth some $3.6B. Dell closed at -2%. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, December 17, 2010, 2:40 PM Dell's (DELL +1.9%) offer to buy Compellent (CML -0.2%) at an 18% discount to its prevailing share price was a "rare and surprising" move, says Frank Voisin. But a purchase offer is based on future earnings estimates, and this is Compellent's first year of profitability. Compellent "shareholders should be happy." Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, December 17, 2010, 1:01 PM Get ready for more poison pills like the one Compellent (CML) adopted after agreeing to be acquired by Dell (DELL) - as companies anticipate defenses against deal-killing shareholder activism. See also: Blackstone (BX), Dynegy (DYN) and Carl Icahn (IEP). Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, December 16, 2010, 9:16 AM Right after Dell's (DELL) buyout, Compellent's (CML) board adopts a stockholder rights plan allowing all shareholders to purchase a new series of preferred stock. Premarket, Compellent is +1%, and Dell is flat. (PR) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, December 14, 2010, 8:17 AM The $960M buyout of Compellent (CML) isn't the end of Dell's (DELL) storage acquisition run, says a company executive. Dell needs more muscle against Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and EMC (EMC) and may next procure a storage management software company. Premarket, Dell is +0.5%. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, December 13, 2010, 2:04 PM Dell (DELL -2.7%) has come "late to the storage M&A party" with its buyout of Compellent (CML -3%), says JPMorgan. Compellent is also a lower quality asset compared to one-time rival 3Par (HPQ). As the deal could strain Dell's relationship with EMC (EMC), JPMorgan reiterates a Sell rating. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, December 13, 2010, 8:11 AM Dell (DELL) will buy Compellent Technologies (CML) for ~$960M in cash. The $27.75/share offer is a 3% discount to Compellent's closing price on Friday. Premarket, Dell is -1.3%, Compellent is -2.7% to $27.91. (PR) Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, December 10, 2010, 9:27 AM Although bidding for Compellent (CML), Dell (DELL) doesn't "have to go buy companies," said CEO Michael Dell Thursday. He claims if "the valuations aren't reasonable, we're not going to buy them." Premarket, Dell is +0.5% and Compellent is -2.2%. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, December 9, 2010, 12:48 PM Given Dell's (DELL) storage market aspirations, its $876M bid for Compellent (CML -13.6%) is no surprise, and will probably be a slam-dunk, notes Citi. "We do not expect another bidder to step in for Compellent, given the asset has been widely shopped for some time and most of the other players have made their move in storage." Comment! [Tech]
