Company Description
ConocoPhillips is an international, integrated energy company.
ConocoPhillips was incorporated in the state of Delaware on November 16, 2001, in connection with, and in anticipation of, the merger between Conoco Inc. and Phillips Petroleum Company. The merger between Conoco and Phillips was... More

- Monday, April 15, 10:49 AM Alaska lawmakers on Sunday gave final approval to a bill backed by top North Slope producers Conoco (COP), BP and Exxon (XOM) to slash state oil production taxes, doing away with a methodology that increases tax rates as oil prices rise. Supporters say the cut will set the stage for future growth as Alaska tries to reverse declining oil output; critics say it will severely damage the state's finances. 2 Comments [Energy]
- Sunday, April 14, 4:37 AM ConocoPhillips' (COP) $1.79B sale of Nigerian assets to Oando Energy Resources (ONDOF.OB) could be in doubt after the latter warned that it faces a funding shortfall, saying that borrowing more money to pay for the deal could strain its finances. Notwithstanding, Oando hopes to raise the necessary money by issuing debt and by selling shares. Comment! [Energy, M&A]
- Saturday, April 13, 8:25 AM When looking for dividend stocks, Kelley Wright believes a company isn't necessarily more attractive just because it pays a higher dividend. The key is when a stock's current yield is at the high end of the range of past yields; a strong balance sheet and a consistent pattern of higher earnings and rising dividends help too. Wright's top 10: APD, ADM, KO, COP, CVX, OXY, PEP, RS, TXN, WAG. 19 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, April 11, 12:42 PM Simmons analysts cut expectations for ConocoPhillips' (COP -0.2%) Q1 earnings to $1.30/share from $1.40 on lower commodity prices, especially for bitumen; ~7% of COP’s Q1 output is bitumen, a larger-than-average exposure among major oil companies. For FY 2013, the firm expects total production to decline by just over 3% but sees a nice bounceback in 2014. 5 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, April 10, 12:19 PM ConocoPhillips (COP +1%) puts on hold its plans to drill in the Alaska Chukchi Sea in 2014 due to U.S. regulatory uncertainty, determining "it would not be prudent at this time to make the significant monetary commitments needed to preserve the option to drill." Several months ago, Shell stopped drilling offshore Alaska after a series of operational mishaps. 2 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, March 28, 3:58 PM ConocoPhillips (COP) CEO Ryan Lance received ~$19.3M in total compensation in 2012 following his ascension to the top spot, a nice raise from the $5.9M he received in 2011 as senior VP of exploration and production. COP says increased base pay levels for Lance and several execs "are linked to their expanded leadership roles following the spinoff." 7 Comments [Energy]
- Thursday, March 28, 8:23 AM BP and partners Shell (RDS.A), ConocoPhillips (COP) and Chevron (CVX) plan to proceed with a two-year appraisal program to evaluate the possibility of developing a third phase of the giant Clair field, west of the Shetland Islands. The group already has committed ~$10B to Clair development so far and plan to spend at least another $500M for the first five appraisal wells. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Monday, March 25, 10:13 AM Chevron (CVX +0.2%) says it found oil at its Walker Ridge Block 98 well in the deepwater Coronado prospect in the Gulf of Mexico, encountering more than 400 ft. of net pay. CVX holds a 40% interest in the prospect and is operator of the discovery well; ConocoPhillips (COP) owns 35% and Anadarko (APC) owns 15%. The multi-block Walker Ridge area is estimated to hold more than 200M boe. 4 Comments [Energy]
- Wednesday, March 20, 11:48 AM The big Shenandoah oil deposit, potentially one of the largest discoveries ever in the Gulf of Mexico, could contain 500M-1B boe, Citi analyst Robert Morris says in backing his Buy ratings for Anadarko (APC +3%), Cobalt (CIE +7.7%) and Marathon (MRO +0.8%). The discovery could boost APC's profits by $3-$6/share, CIE's by $2.50-$5/share and MRO's by $0.75-$1.50. 9 Comments [Energy, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 20, 8:43 AM Potential bidders for today’s Gulf of Mexico oil-lease round (including BP), with 7,000 deepwater blocks up for grabs, surely are heartened by Anadarko’s "potentially giant" find that dwarfs other discoveries in the Shenandoah Basin region. The success raises hopes the Gulf will remain an important oil-producing region for years to come. Premarket: APC +3%, COP +1.7%, CIE +7.3%, MRO +1.3%. Comment! [Energy]
- Tuesday, March 19, 5:19 PM Anadarko Petroleum (APC) +1.6% AH on news the Shenandoah-2 well in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico encountered more than 1,000 net feet of oil pay, in one of its largest oil discoveries in the Gulf. APC is operator of the well; partners include COP +0.3%, CIE +4.3%, MRO +0.6% AH. Comment! [Energy, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 12, 10:17 AM Strategas analyst Daniel Clifton sees a better than 50% chance the Keystone pipeline (TRP) will be approved by late summer, and he thinks seven stocks will benefit directly or indirectly: CNQ, COP, DE, XOM, LYB, PWR and VLO - companies which already are doing well, and adding incremental revenue from Keystone should only help to improve their top and bottom lines. 6 Comments [Energy, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, March 8, 2:47 PM Cnooc's (CEO) acquisition of Nexen (NXY) finally went through but some say the Canadian government's decision to change the investment rules may turn out to be an unwelcome surprise. China’s quest for energy security means it is investing all over the world, and it has many other options. ConocoPhillips (COP) already has suggested it is having some difficulty in deal-making under the new Canadian rules. Comment! [Energy, Global & FX]
- Friday, March 8, 8:47 AM ConocoPhillips (COP) plans to drill up to two exploration wells in remote Arctic waters next year, undeterred by setbacks suffered by Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B). COP is targeting a prospect in the Chukchi Sea farther south than Shell's prospects, meaning a longer open-water season in most years, and plans to use a jackup rig rather than a mobile drillship like the two used by Shell. 1 Comment [Energy]
- Wednesday, March 6, 3:34 AM Myanmar reportedly won't force foreign energy companies to join up with local partners in an auction of offshore oil and gas blocks that are due to take place in April. Overseas firms were required to take Burmese partners for onshore assets, which may have put the foreign companies off. Those eying the offshore blocks include Shell (RDS.A), Chevron (CVX), ConocoPhillips (COP) and Exxon Mobil (XOM). Comment! [Energy]
- Tuesday, March 5, 11:54 AM Production of oil and gas from shale is growing fast enough that North America may be an energy exporter within a decade, ConocoPhillips (COP) CEO Ryan Lance says. Shale development, which brings a faster payoff than a liquefied natural gas project, has changed the investment cycle because it does not require massive up-front investments, he says. 7 Comments [Energy]

$COP 3x normal volume today with relatively little price movement.. Any ideas why? Surely Gheit's upgrade wasn't the only reason. Long COP - View all 2 replies

Bob de'Long: Perhaps as many people go contrary to Gheit, as listen to him. -
Michael Fitzsimmons: Best guess: Brent up $1.70 on strong China oil demand data. COP's Alaskan, Bohai Bay, Libya, and North Sea is all Brent based production.
