- Tuesday, June 18, 7:09 PM IBM is launching a slew of cloud apps/services it says are aimed at C-Suite execs, but is light on specifics. Big Blue says its SmartCloud Solutions portfolio now offers 100+ business functions for decision-making execs such as CFOs, CMOs, procurement/supply chain officers, and HR chiefs to leverage. A new social media analytics solution for CMOs (will compete against CRM's Radian6 and ORCL''s Collective Intellect) is among them. The announcement comes on the heels of IBM's ~$2B acquisition of cloud infrastructure provider SoftLayer, which the company plans to integrate with its SmartCloud unit. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 11, 9:39 AM Salesforce (CRM) has followed up on the ExactTarget deal by acquiring EdgeSpring, a startup that's fresh off releasing a business intelligence/analytics software platform that can handle both structured and unstructured data. The deal, which likely cost a lot less than the $2.5B paid for ExactTarget, could bolster Salesforce's Data.com unit, and makes sense in light of SAP and Oracle's efforts to merge analytics with CRM software. 3 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, June 6, 6:54 PM Salesforce (CRM) hires former Oracle North American sales chief Keith Block to be its president, vice chairman, and sales/customer support/consulting chief, and makes him a board member. Block had a 26-year run at Oracle, which ended a year ago after an IM conversation in which he declared Oracle's Sun Microsystems unit to be "dead dead dead" was made public (judging by sales trends, Block might've not been too far off the mark). Comment! [Tech, Breaking News]
- Wednesday, June 5, 6:14 PM "Educated guesses" put the price tag for SAP's purchase of hybris around $1.2B-$1.5B, says AllThingsD's Arik Hesseldahl. BMO believes the deal makes SAP a top-3 e-commerce software vendor, along with Oracle and IBM, and others see similarities between SAP's plans to create an end-to-end CRM software platform for analyzing retailer data and engaging with customers across channels, and Salesforce's (CRM) attempts to create an end-to-end cloud marketing platform with the help of ExactTarget. Discussing the deal, co-CEO Bill McDermott stated SAP wants to provide "everything a CEO needs to run a corporation in full intimacy with their consumer" in real-time. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, June 5, 7:09 AM Salesforce.com (CRM) is added to Goldman's Conviction Buy list with a whopping price target of $60. Analyst Heather Bellini takes note of the company's "significant runway in core SFA as well as in the service, marketing, and cloud platform markets." Shares +1.6% premarket. 5 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 4, 12:46 PM E-mail/social media marketing software firm Constant Contact (CTCT +4.5%) and cloud contact center software firm inContact (SAAS +7.4%) join the list of names rallying on hopes the Salesforce-ExactTarget deal will spur further M&A activity. Wells Fargo observes Salesforce (CRM -3.1%) stated the bidding for ExactTarget (ET) was competitive, which leads it to think SAP or IBM may be interested. Though wondering if Salesforce will be able to tie together its acquisitions, Om Malik thinks the deal makes sense on paper, given ExactTarget's e-mail-focused offerings add "more structure to Salesforce’s ambiguous sounding Marketing Cloud." Marc Benioff suggests Salesforce is now likely to "[take] a vacation" from M&A for 12-18 months. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, June 4, 9:14 AM Responsys (MKTG) +10.5% and Marketo (MKTO) +5.7% following news Salesforce (CRM) is buying cloud marketing automation software rival ExactTarget for $2.5B (a 53% premium). Salesforce has long been expected to make a cloud marketing acquisition following Oracle's purchase of Eloqua, and the deal might pressure rivals (Microsoft? SAP?) to make a similar move. Salesforce promises to add ExactTarget's software to its Marketing Cloud platform, which includes social media marketing software from the Buddy Media and Radian6 acquisitions, as well as the Social.com app. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, M&A]
- Tuesday, June 4, 7:42 AM Salesforce.com (CRM) purchases email marketing firm ExactTarget (ET) for $33.75/share in cash, a total transaction value of about $2.5B. Salesforce.com expects the purchase to reduce FY14 non-GAAP EPS by about $0.16. Assuming a late Q2 close, new EPS guidance for Q2 FY14 is $0.06-$0.07, and for FY14 of $0.31-$0.33 on revenue of $3.955B-$4B. ET +51.8% to $33.54 premarket, CRM +3.3%. CC at 8 ET. (PR) 10 Comments [M&A, Tech, On the Move]
- Friday, May 24, 10:32 AM Salesforce.com (CRM -7.8%) is cut to Hold with price target reduced $9 to $42 at Wedbush post-earnings. Analyst Steve Koenig views "deferred commission expenditures" as the best indicator of new sales activity, and they fell 46% Y/Y. Asked about it on the CC (transcript), CFO Graham Smith suggests a tough comp as the reason for the big dip. Needham's Mike Huang reiterates his Buy and $50 PT: "We don't detect any meaningful deterioration of sales cycles or close rates." 6 Comments [Tech, On the Move]

- Thursday, May 16, 7:05 PM Integrator checks suggest demand for Salesforce's (CRM +3%) Service Cloud customer support platform is "picking up significantly," and that Force.com and the mainstay Sales Cloud continue to see "good growth," writes Wedbush's Steve Koenig ahead of next Thursday's FQ1 report. Koenig also thinks Salesforce has "plenty of running room" to sell to additional divisions within large accounts. He has heard "anecdotal reports" of discounts, but thinks they're "limited to the low-end." FBR estimated in January Service Cloud now accounts for 30% of Salesforce's new deal activity. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, May 16, 12:16 PM Cisco JV partner EMC (EMC +4.5%) joins the list of companies rallying in response to Cisco's FQ3 beat and guidance. Cisco mentioned on its earnings call integrated hardware solutions such as Vblock (offered by the Cisco/EMC VCE JV) are driving demand for its UCS servers - Cisco's UCS unit saw 77% Y/Y rev. growth. All in all, it's a good day for enterprise IT names, who are happy to receive some good earnings news after getting plenty of bad news (I, II, III, IV). HPQ +1.7%. IBM +1.3%. ORCL +1.3%. VMW +2.6%. TIBX +4.1%. CTXS +3.9%. CRM +3.8%. JIVE +4.1%. NTGR +2.7%. CVLT +2.6%. INFA +3%. (others rallying: I, II) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
