Intuit (INTU +0.4%) is acquiring Demandforce, a developer of cloud marketing software for SMBs, for $423.5M in cash. The deal might be the strongest example yet of Intuit's efforts to diversify beyond tax software - the company has already made a strong push into mobile shopping and payments. However, the cloud marketing space is getting crowded - CRM, CTCT, BV, and ORCL are also key players.

Also heard during Oracle's (ORCL) FQ3 call (webcast): Larry Ellison engages in some of his customary trash-talking. He criticizes Salesforce.com's (CRM) cloud apps as not having the security features of Oracle's Fusion apps, and bashes SAP's cloud  offerings as focused on smaller businesses. As for SAP's Hana in-memory database? "We've been working on [in-memory technology] for years," Ellison boasts, citing Oracle's TimesTen product.

Salesforce.com (CRM) has cancelled plans to build a giant new headquarters in San Francisco, and investors are skeptical of the company's explanation that the decision was due to faster-than-expected growth - especially since it has already spent $278M on the project. For now at least, Salesforce is coping with its growth by leasing another 400K square feet of office space in the city.
