Crocs: Successful Brand or Victim of Cheap Imitations? [view article]
I closed my CROX position last year October to add to my POT stock. Some oil and gas profits were recently reinvested into this cyclical shoe and cash until this market is at a level I feel comfortable to play.
Is CROX a fad? Absolutely, just like the 15 year UGG fad.
Knockoffs? Plenty, but cheap enough to have Brand loyal support.
Solid branding, new product lines, expensive accessories, comfort, and new international support.
Between October 1-31 I will sellout of CROX again just when I need to put away my sandals, get out my winter boots, back up the oil / gas market truck to heat my home, and before I see their international shipping bill costs!!!
There is too many weak handed shareholders to hold this stock annually.-Including me!
CASH is my favorite ticker lately.
Some spec cash invested in what I will believe will be the 2008 WSA footwear line winner www.skinsfootwear.com/ Skins Inc (SKNN.OB) ticker @ .18 cents
The biggest long term difference between CROX and SKNN ?
SKNN is completely patented something I wish CROX had!
FYI Shoe Man's mention of new CROX models priced at $220 to $300 are lines not yet launched to the public and will be on display in August for retailers only at WSA.

Skins Footware: A Next-Generation Crocs? [view article]
Originality aways wins over the fashion forward crowd. Like Crox and UGGS Skins has a shoe concept that most people have never seen before. I purchased a pair of Skins footwear and 2 weeks later purchased the stock because I like the shoes and I like the fact they were smart enough to patent their shoe. Protection from competition provides safety for shareholders. Reply

Steve,I feel your pain,I'm from Henderson,N.C,on the Virginia border. You must understand that speculators and short players help to stabilize the markets..they are not the enemy,if they are wrong on their position, they will pay very heavily.Just give it some time, all roosters will come to roost...this said by a 35yr investor! Skins: Just Another Silly Shoe Idea? [view article]
I sat on the sidelines until now. A year ago Skins Inc. shares were $2.00 with no shoes for sale. Now the Skins shoe is alive and well and the stock is .18 at close today SKNN.OB. I decided to buy stock before they attend WSA (World Shoe Shoe) in Las Vegas. With Distribution already in place with Zappos for fall I look forward to my buy low and sell higher position. Never one to buy on hype I bought a pair Sportie LA on Melrose Avenue 2 weeks ago and see a great market and future for this patent shoe.
Ps I wish CROX would have had a patent protection like Skins does then hardworking people like yourself would not have stock go from 38 to 8 since you wrote your article.

since over 30% of the people believe that the margin on oil contracts should be raised to 90 or 95% to cut the speculation why not get this done if its true the price of oil will drop 50 to 70 dollars a barrel that would be great i say listen to us common people who are not considered experts like the so called experts steve from Hickory n.c. i also wanted to add that patents are routinely ignored in some other countries where knockoffs are manufactured. why give them the ingredients to the secret sauce for free? Reply

@DaveinHackensack who wrote "2) Checking the company's SEC filings, I found that Crocs has not attempted to patent the Croslite material. Why not? Are they unable to do so?"

patenting it would require public filings regarding potentially the manufacturing process and materials used to make it. instead, croslite is a trade secret, much the same way as the recipe to coke. competitors can only guess what's in it/how to make it...

the facts are that international sales of these shoes are dwarfing what happened in the US and at that time, they did not have an additonal line of goods. august will be an interesting report. if it is a fad, it has not even begun to reach it's revenue milestones. sales and profits will eclipse previous performance. but as always, that doesn't translate to stock value. Well put Bowman 711, well put. You are an individual of great intellectual reserves. The beauty behind the whole process, Gorski is free to write, and all are free to critique. Could you think of any other country you would want to live? Let the stocks market rise and all we will all be happy, unless you are selling short. Reply

David, it's nice to hear you are in agreement. Actually, I have been in dry-bulk for a while, and bought NM because they bought a port terminal with grain silos in Uruguay. Its heavily asset-based, even if heavily leveraged, but I favor asset based equities. The Uruguay purchase, and they are keeping the previous owners on-board, is another key factor that really sets NM apart from the other dry-bulk shippers. BTW - I invest only in dry-bulk. Less risk of environmental disasters than tankers.

My wife and I bought knock-offs for our 5 year old daughter. They lasted 3 weeks. The next pair were the real deal and hardly any sign of wear after 2 months. She'll outgrow them soon and we'll be buying again. She loves em. Parents aren't moved by fashion trends when it comes to pre-teen shoes. They want shoes that are comfortable, last, and make the kids happy. On July 4th, we attended a pool party... almost every kid was wearing authentic Crocs. The others had on sandals. Not an imitation in sight. Why? The imitations have a well deserved bad rep. Perhaps there are some good copies (Skechers?), but parents don't want to shop around until they find the decent clone. The clones may be doing Crocs a service by pushing the repeat business their way, as was our case. Reply

In the medical industry, CROCS are very popular among hospital staff and office staff. Now that they have released an updated model to comply with safer shoe wear in medical environments, I believe that they will have a very loyal customer base in healthcare for decades. Reply

NM is a good bet. It has excellent value. It has an extremely low PE and FPE. It also has an excellent Price to Book value ratio. Further it has both a new fleet in South America (for the river traffic mostly) which is supposed to begin adding 35% to EBITDA beginning in the 4th quarter of this year. It got pushed further downward in the recent market move in that direction, so it is an excellent buy now. Reply

Re POT: Fast Money held a CEO conference update on the AG sector stocks. The CEO's they interviewed all stated that the fertilizer growth scenario will continue for the near term foreseeable future (the next year at least). They saw no definite end to this growth cycle for AG companies. A lot of people will have seen this video by now. POT should move upward today (and possibly for several days) barring a market meltdown. Reply
