- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 3:21 AM Wal-Mart (WMT) is reportedly in talks to acquire an 80% stake in leading Turkish retailer Migros from U.K. private-equity firm BC Partners in a deal that would value Migros at over $4B including debt. Wal-Mart could face competition, though, with France's Carrefour (CRRFY.PK) and Britain's Tesco (TSCDF.PK) also having shown interest. Comment! [Consumer, M&A]
- Thursday, October 11, 2012, 6:52 AM French retailing giant Carrefour (CRRFY.PK) saw sales increase 2.1% Y/Y to €22.63 billion ($29.1B) as sales in Latin America offset weakness Southern Europe. The company used the same game plan in France that Costco did in the U.S. of luring customers to its superstores by offering low-priced gas. CCRFY.PK +2.2% in Paris trading. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Friday, September 14, 2012, 12:59 PM India re-approves a plan (first passed and then revoked last year) to allow big-box retailers like Wal-Mart (WMT) to own controlling interests in local ventures. Together with a new law allowing (minority) foreign ownership of airlines, it's among the more important economic reforms for the country in 2 decades. One India ETF: EPI +3.8%. Comment! [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Monday, June 18, 2012, 2:02 PM Carrefour (CRRFY.PK) CEO George Plassat says it will take the retailing heavyweight three years to turn around with a wide series of cost-cutting measures, including stepping back from unprofitable markets. In that vein, the company announced last week that it would exit Greece. (Earlier: Tesco exits Japan) Comment! [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 11:17 AM "The €1 Price Point." With about 20% of the population in Spain and Greece now below the poverty line, food companies such as Nestle (NSRGY.PK) and Unilever (UN) - hoping to reignite sales growth - roll out in Southern Europe packaging and tactics typically reserved for emerging economies. Comment! [Global & FX]
- Monday, January 30, 2012, 4:55 AM Carrefour (CRRFY.PK) taps Georges Plassat to replace Chairman and CEO Lars Olofsson as the French retailing giant struggles to keep up with rivals. Shares -2.8% in France. Comment! [Global & FX, Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, January 19, 2012, 6:58 AM French retailing giant Carrefour (CRRFY.PK) reports Q4 sales -0.8% and speaks of a "deteriorating environment" hitting non-food trading. Sales in France -2.4%; sales in Europe ex-France -4.3%. Latin American sales +6.8%; Asian sales +2.8%. Shares -2.4% in Paris. (PR) Comment! [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Tuesday, December 27, 2011, 2:46 PM Struggling French retail giant Carrefour (CRERY.PK) sells and then leases back 97 supermarkets for €365M. The company says the transaction allows it to optimize use of its capital which will now be reinvested in various real estate projects. Carrefour's shares are off 44% YTD in Paris as it loses market share at home and has difficulties overseas. 2 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Friday, November 25, 2011, 6:53 AM A hard-fought law passed yesterday in India allowing foreign retailers to take majority stakes in supermarkets paves the way for Wal-Mart (WMT) and other retail giants to take their presence in the country to another level. Wal-Mart has long seen India as one of the last great growth opportunities. 1 Comment [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Thursday, October 13, 2011, 7:30 AM The slowing economy hits Europe's No. 1 retailer as Carrefour (CRERY.PK) warns Q4 profit will miss expectations. In its home country of France, same-store sales fell 4.6% in Q3, with a 9.6% dive in discretionary nonfood items as customers stick to essential purchases. Shares -5.5% in Paris. Comment! [Global & FX, Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, August 16, 2011, 5:29 PM What may really interest Wal-Mart (WMT) about Carrefour's (CRERY.PK) Brazilian assets are not its hypermarkets, but the French retailer's 73 "atacadao" outlets. These smaller cash and carry stores are of growing popularity with Brazilians - no longer worried about hyperinflation and instead interested in shopping locally to avoid hours stuck in traffic. Comment! [Global & FX, Consumer]
- Thursday, August 11, 2011, 3:55 PM Reported, denied, and now reported again, sources say Wal-mart (WMT) is looking into the acquisition of Carrefour's (CRERY.PK) Brazilian operations, with UBS advising. The deal, said to be in the $6-$8B range, would double Wal-mart's presence in the country. Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX, M&A]
- Tuesday, August 9, 2011, 11:27 AM Wal-Mart (WMT) is not in talks to buy Carrefour's (CRERY.PK) Brazilian operations, according to a source familiar with the situation. (earlier) Comment! [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Monday, July 25, 2011, 9:20 AM An Indian government ruling paves the way for Wal-Mart (WMT) and Carrefour (CRERY.PK) to widen their presence in the world's second-most populous country. Already players in the wholesale area, the companies (and other overseas firms) may now be allowed majority ownership in retail stores. 2 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Wednesday, July 13, 2011, 5:54 AM Carrefour (CRERY.PK), the world's No. 2 retailer, saw earnings drop 23% in H1 as "lagging performance in France and weak western European markets outweighed strong sales in Asia and Latin America." Though part of the slump stemmed from a tactical error on merchandise pricing, it bodes poorly for the state of Europe's retail sector, and America's, by extension. 1 Comment [Earnings, Consumer]
- Tuesday, July 5, 2011, 7:47 AM Carrefour (CRERY.PK) shares sink more than 13% in Paris as the deal to merge its Brazilian operations with Companhia Brasileira (CBD) could face insurmountable roadblocks. Casino, a competitor to Carrefour, warns the merger cannot proceed without its consent. Comment! [Global & FX]
