- Wednesday, March 28, 2012, 12:47 PM Cisco (CSCO) is acquiring ClearAccess, a developer of software that allows service providers to manage and provision broadband modems and set-top boxes, and plans to integrate the startup's products with its Prime network management software. The news could be affecting shares of Synchronoss (SNCR -2%), though Synchronoss' provisioning software is largely used for mobile devices. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, March 28, 2012, 9:49 AM News Corp. (NWS) denies allegations that soon-to-be-sold affiliate NDS not only hacked the smartcards of a British rival to BSkyB, but also those of Australian pay-TV competitors during the 1990s. Even if true, the activity wasn't actually illegal at the time in Australia. Shares -1.1%. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, March 26, 2012, 6:22 PM News Corp. (NWS, NWSA) might have another hacking scandal on its hands. A BBC program allgeges set-top software firm NDS, 49%-owned by News Corp. and due to be acquired by Cisco (CSCO), cracked the smart card codes of ONdigital, a one-time rival to News Corp.-affiliated BSkyB (BSYBY.PK), and gave them to pirates, who used them to make thousands of counterfeit smart cards. All that illegal viewing contributed to ONdigital's bankruptcy. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Monday, March 26, 2012, 1:33 PM In addition to praising Ubiquiti Networks (UBNT), Auriga is reiterating a buy on rival Aruba Networks (ARUN). The firm thinks a recent Cisco (CSCO) PR that drives home the networking giant's support for corporate IT's "bring your own device" trend is a positive for Aruba, whose enterprise Wi-Fi solutions provide extensive device-management capabilities. William Blair made a similar point earlier this month. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, March 20, 2012, 6:09 PM Though it lost a bit of share in 2011 thanks to a weak 1H, Cisco (CSCO) still dominates the enterprise router market, with Infonetics estimating its share to be near 75%. Interestingly, H-P (HPQ), for whom networking is one of very few bright spots, has passed Juniper (JNPR) to become the market's #2 vendor, doubling its share in 2011 thanks to strong exposure to the fast-growing Chinese market. - Monday, March 19, 2012, 11:34 AM A look at some other large cap tech dividend plays on the day Apple (AAPL +1.3%) steps into the space: MSFT -1.2%, INTC -0.5%, IBM -0.4%, ORCL -0.8%, CSCO +0.3%. 1 Comment [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, March 16, 2012, 10:40 AM More on Cisco's switch efforts: John Chambers recently affirmed Cisco's commitment to building switches using proprietary chips. However, the rapid growth of startups such as Nicira and Arista Networks, whose switches pair some form of software-defined networking with chips from the likes of Broadcom (BRCM) and Marvell (MRVL), suggests Cisco needs to offer a rival solution. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, March 16, 2012, 10:39 AM Cisco (CSCO) has reportedly tasked 3 top engineers with the job of building a high-end data center switch called Insiemie. Unlike Cisco's traditional offerings, Insiemie will rely on a concept called software-defined networking, in which processing is handled by off-the-shelf chips, and much of a switch's intelligence resides in proprietary software that can be changed on demand. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, March 16, 2012, 10:31 AM Wells Fargo views Cisco's (CSCO +0.4%) acquisition of NDS Group as a positive, saying that the deal provides it with attractive video assets that should improve the company's offerings in the area. The firm maintains an Outperform rating on the stock. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, March 16, 2012, 9:09 AM Sterne Agee praises Cisco's (CSCO) purchase of NDS (I, II, III), and notes one overlooked benefit: spending $5B on the U.K-based company means Cisco can invest part of its huge overseas cash stockpile without having to pay repatriation taxes. Cisco is among those lobbying hard for a tax holiday on overseas cash, and has suggested it would boost its U.S. spending if such an event occurred. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, March 15, 2012, 1:00 PM Cisco (CSCO -1.6%) and News Corp. (NWS +1.7%) head in opposite directions following the former's purchase of NDS, in which the latter holds a 49% stake. Cisco says the deal will be immediately accretive to earnings, and that it will continue to sell NDS' software to rival set-top vendors. Strategy Analytics sees NDS aiding Cisco's efforts to get pay-TV providers to embrace online video, while Light Reading notes the value of NDS' relationships with Chinese and Indian pay-TV providers. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, March 15, 2012, 10:45 AM Newly-public Synacor (SYNC +5.5%) rallies following Cisco's (CSCO) purchase of NDS (I, II). There could be some hopes that Synacor, whose software enables pay-TV providers to deliver web-based video, will also be an M&A target following the deal. On the flip side, cable infrastructure hardware/software vendor Harmonic (HLIT -3%) is selling off. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, March 15, 2012, 9:23 AM Cisco (CSCO) -0.7% after acquiring top set-top box software firm NDS, 3 months after it filed for an IPO. The purchase indicates Cisco is doubling down on the cable infrastructure market at a time when many firms are thinking of selling their set-top box operations. Cisco is touting the ability of NDS' software to bolster its cloud-based Videoscape platform. According to its F-1, NDS had revenue of $477M (+7% Y/Y) and net income of $46.1M in the 6 months ending Dec. 31. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, March 15, 2012, 8:07 AM Cisco (CSCO) to buy NDS for $5B, as rumored. (PR) (earlier) 2 Comments [Breaking News, M&A, Tech]
- Thursday, March 15, 2012, 4:11 AM Cisco (CSCO) is in advanced talks to buy NDS for $5B, according to a report in Israel's Calcalist financial newspaper, a roughly 35% premium to NDS' value when it delisted from the stock exchange in 2009. NDS, which develops software for multi-channel television networks, is jointly owned by News Corp. and P-E firm Permira. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, March 14, 2012, 9:23 AM Though broadband subscription growth is leveling off in many nations, online video demand (much of it for non-PC devices) should nonetheless drive a 12x increase in wireline and mobile broadband traffic between 2010 and 2015, says IDC. Cisco's Visual Networking Index also projects strong traffic growth, which telecom equipment makers are counting on to make their recent woes a mere hiccup. Comment! [Tech]
