- Wednesday, March 14, 2012, 9:23 AM Though broadband subscription growth is leveling off in many nations, online video demand (much of it for non-PC devices) should nonetheless drive a 12x increase in wireline and mobile broadband traffic between 2010 and 2015, says IDC. Cisco's Visual Networking Index also projects strong traffic growth, which telecom equipment makers are counting on to make their recent woes a mere hiccup. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 7, 2012, 5:19 PM Arista Networks, a high-flying Ethernet switch vendor featuring Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim, says it plans to go public late this year or early next. Arista, whose high-speed switches are powered by Broadcom (BRCM) chips, is one of a slew of a upstarts to challenge Cisco (CSCO) and Juniper's (JNPR) proprietary offerings with switches using off-the-shelf silicon. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 7, 2012, 12:45 PM Google (GOOG) is looking to sell Motorola Mobility's (MMI) set-top box business, claims the NY Post. Though Larry Page has said the business could help advance Google's TV ambitions, it has traditionally featured low margins and tight control by cable providers over device specifications. Pace and Thomson are also reportedly looking to exit the set-top market, and Cisco (CSCO) has been forced to shoot down similar rumors. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, March 6, 2012, 12:57 PM Intel (INTC) rolls out its anticipated Romley server CPU platform, which it officially calls the Xeon E5-2600. Analysts believe Romley's built-in networking features could drive demand for 10G Ethernet switches, thereby benefiting both switch vendors such as CSCO and JNPR, and chipmakers such as BRCM and MRVL. SemiAccurate is quite impressed with Romley after running some tests. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, March 6, 2012, 12:06 PM Brocade (BRCD), which recently saw buyout talks with Blackstone fall apart, is introducing new Ethernet switches it boasts will automate management tasks and simplify installation, by leveraging the company's HyperEdge technology. Brocade faces tough competition from a resurgent Cisco (CSCO) in the Ethernet switch market, as well as well as in the market for storage networking switches. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, March 5, 2012, 2:15 PM Though it rates F5 Networks (FFIV) a Neutral, UBS is lifting its estimates and PT, citing positive trends in data center and mobile capex, as well as management's comments at the Mobile World Congress. UBS notes F5 is a supplier to Facebook (FB), which plans on nearly tripling its capex in 2012 to $1.7B, and believes its position relative to CTXS and CSCO in the application delivery controller market is solid. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 1:33 PM Wi-Fi networking equipment sales rose 14% Y/Y in Q4, estimates Dell'Oro. CSCO is believed to have a majority of the lucrative enterprise market, and is followed by ARUN and HPQ. It's also noted that shipments to service providers rose 170% Y/Y (indirectly a positive for WIFI) and BelAir Networks, recently acquired by ERIC, is the leading provider of outdoor "mesh" Wi-Fi gear. (Q3 data) 1 Comment [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 28, 2012, 5:56 PM Videoconferencing hardware can be added to the list of markets where Cisco (CSCO) has picked up share (I, II, III). IDC estimates Cisco's videoconferencing sales rose 35% Y/Y in Q4, outpacing the market's 24.6% growth, boosting its share to 54.3%, and serving as proof its acquisition of Tandberg is paying off. Polycom (PLCM), which soared in January following its Q4 report, posted 15.2% growth. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 28, 2012, 8:49 AM Finisar (FNSR) -2.5% premarket after Jefferies lowers shares to Hold from Buy with a $22 price target, down from $24, citing potential risks posed by Cisco's (CSCO) recent acquisition of Lightwire, which could impact one of FNSR's fastest growing revenue streams. The firm suggests investors rotate into JDS Uniphase (JDSU) "given its relatively greater exposure to rebounding service provider capex." Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Monday, February 27, 2012, 4:27 PM Dell (DELL) unveils a major revamp of its enterprise hardware line; items of note include new server flash memory solutions, a data warehousing appliance for SMBs, and a new architecture for virtualizing networking resources - the last announcement is aimed squarely at Cisco (CSCO) and its UCS servers. Dell execs use the announcements to once more proclaim Dell is no longer a PC company. Given how the PC business is flatlining, it's hard to blame them. Comment! [Tech]
- Monday, February 27, 2012, 12:15 PM Auriga reiterates a Buy on Cisco (CSCO) following its acquisition of Lightwire, arguing the move (along with others) indicates a renewed focus on creating differentiated hardware based on custom chips, one that could help it stave off growing competition. Moreover, Auriga believes the Lightwire purchase is a "game-changer" that will lead Cisco to make its own optical modules (possibly bad news for JDSU and FNSR). Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, February 24, 2012, 5:05 PM In a talk with GigaOm, Cisco's (CSCO) John Chambers vehemently denies that his company is looking to sell its set-top box business, echoing the remarks of a co-worker. Chambers also touts the uptake seen by Cisco's UCS servers, and suggests Cisco will continue to invest in its own switching chips, in spite of growing competition from solutions relying on chips from BRCM, MRVL, and others. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, February 24, 2012, 8:22 AM Cisco (CSCO) announces its intention to buy privately-held Lightwire for $271M in a deal that is slated to completed in its FQ3. The firm say the acquisition will help boost its optical interconnect technology for high-speed networking applications. Shares +0.2% premarket. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, February 22, 2012, 2:08 PM It looks as if Cisco (CSCO) has gained a healthy amount of router share in recent months, likely at Juniper's (JNPR) expense: Whereas IDC estimates the global router market fell 2.3% Y/Y in calendar Q4, Cisco reported 8% growth for its router business during its FQ2 earnings call. In addition, Cisco's switch business grew 8% in FQ2, better than the 5.1% Q4 growth estimated for the overall market. (previously) Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, February 21, 2012, 11:08 AM Hoping to quash a New York Post rumor to the contrary, a Cisco (CSCO) exec says his firm is committed to the set-top box market, while adding Cisco is working with carriers to deploy its Videoscape solution for delivering cloud-based video. However, a Light Reading source also claims Cisco is shopping its set-top unit (albeit "selectively"), as it deals with growing competition and price pressure. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, February 17, 2012, 6:47 PM Why is Cisco (CSCO) so concerned about Microsoft's (MSFT) acquisition of Skype? It's not just that Microsoft's Lync platform competes with Cisco's unified communications offerings. It's that Microsoft's plans to integrate Lync with Skype could pave the way for a platform that bridges corporate and consumer communications. Cisco can't afford to be shut out, hence its demand for "interoperability." 1 Comment [Tech]
