- Wednesday, April 3, 9:59 AM Though Cisco (CSCO) insists it has no intention of entering the traditional base station market (citing commoditization), its acquisition of small cell base station vendor Ubiquisys makes it more of a mobile infrastructure rival to Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) and Ericsson (ERIC) than ever. The combination of Ubiquisys' 3G/4G small cell solutions and Cisco's Wi-Fi hardware should eventually give it an end-to-end offering to take on market leader ALU's lightRadio line. Cisco is also pushing its new Quantum software suite (the result of the BroadHop/Cariden/Intucell deals) to mobile carriers. 2 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, April 3, 8:41 AM Cisco (CSCO) has agreed to acquire U.K.-based Ubiquisys for $310M and retention-based incentives in a deal that is designed to strengthen Cisco's femtocells offerings, which help improve connectivity on 3G and LTE networks. The transaction adds to Cisco's purchase of Intucell for $475M and of BroadHop in January, both of which also expanded Cisco's mobile infrastructure business. (PR) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, March 25, 1:58 PM Cisco (CSCO +1%) continues to look overseas for M&A targets: the company discloses it has bought SolveDirect, an Austrian provider of cloud-based software for integrating IT services. Cisco, which is looking to both software and services for growth, talks up SolveDirect's ability to automate service integration, and says its offerings will bolster its IT service portfolio. John Chambers recently stated Cisco will continue acquiring overseas until it can repatriate offshore cash at a lower tax rate. 2 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Friday, February 15, 12:44 PM "If the majority of our money remains outside the U.S. .... that's where you'll see us acquire going forward," says John Chambers, suggesting Cisco (CSCO) won't make a major U.S. acquisition unless it can repatriate offshore cash (currently 80% of its balance) at a lower tax rate. Both of Cisco's 2013 acquisitions - Cognitive Security and Intucell - have involved foreign companies, and so did its largest 2012 acquisition (the $5B purchase of NDS). (previous) 12 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, January 29, 5:23 PM Cisco (CSCO) is acquiring Czech software firm Cognitive Security. Cognitive's products use artificial intelligence techniques and the real-time analysis of network traffic to detect cyber threats. Like Intucell and NDS, Cognitive can be paid for with Cisco's giant overseas cash hoard. EMC acquired a cyber threat-detection software firm in October. John Chambers has made it clear Cisco is on the lookout for security purchases. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, January 24, 5:43 PM Cisco (CSCO) is selling its Linksys home networking unit to rival Belkin for an undisclosed sum. The price tag is likely well below the $500M Cisco paid for Linksys in '03. Belkin says it will maintain the Linksys brand - both brands compete with NetGear (NTGR). The deal is another step in Cisco's efforts to cut its dependence on low-margin hardware, and increase its reliance on software and services. (previous) Update: PrivCo thinks the price may be around $275M, given Linksys' revenue and multiples for comparable deals. 3 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, January 23, 9:49 AM Cisco (CSCO) makes another big network management software purchase, snapping up Israel's Intucell for $475M in cash and incentives. Intucell's products analyze mobile radio networks in order to optimize performance (e.g. more capacity, fewer dropped calls, better coverage) and automate management tasks. The company also offers small cell solutions, an area of focus for Cisco. The acquisition follows deals to buy management software firms BroadHop and Cariden. Cisco recently said it wants to double software sales in the next 5 years. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, January 14, 2:08 PM John Chambers recently said he gave Chris Young, the SVP in charge of Cisco's (CSCO) security ops, a "blank check" to hire and acquire as necessary over the next 2-3 years. Moreover, sources tell Reuters Cisco has been actively looking for security acquisitions. Chambers' motivation: while Cisco's security ops post modest growth, upstarts such as PANW, FTNT, and FIRE are growing much faster thanks to their focus on segments such as next-gen firewalls, UTM hardware, and IPS systems, products that offer deeper analysis of content/apps than traditional firewalls. 1 Comment [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, January 2, 2:21 PM Cisco (CSCO) is open to making additional wireless-focused acquisitions to "fill gaps" in its portfolio, says marketing exec Murali Nemani, but it has no interest in making a larger acquisition to compete head-on with the likes of Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent in the traditional base station market. Nemani adds Cisco views the market as "a slow-growing, highly commoditized space." Instead, Cisco wants to focus on the budding small cell market, via integrated solutions that feature its Wi-Fi hardware, management software, and ASR 5000 routers. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, December 19, 2012, 6:28 PM Google (GOOG) is selling Motorola Home for $2.35B ($2.05B in cash + $300M in stock) to Arris (ARRS). The division, which sells set-top boxes, infrastructure gear, and other hardware to pay-TV and broadband providers, had revenue of $3.4B in the 4 quarters ending Sep. 30. Arris, which closed with a market cap of just $1.65B, is halted. The deal will be "significantly accretive" to Arris' EPS and give Google a 15.7% stake in the company, which will probably have to raise a lot of debt to finance the purchase. (previous) 6 Comments [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, December 18, 2012, 11:32 AM Cisco (CSCO +0.4%) is betting big on network management software: fresh off acquiring Cariden (I, II), the company says it's buying BroadHop, a provider of policy control software for carriers. While Cariden focuses on managing infrastructures and optimizing capacity, BroadHop's software helps manage end-user mobile/wireline services. Both purchases support Cisco's ONE platform for remotely programming its hardware. Earlier this year, Cisco bought ClearAccess, a developer of modem/set-top provisioning software. (Meraki) (Truviso) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Sunday, December 16, 2012, 7:59 PM Cisco (CSCO) is looking for a buyer for its Linksys unit, Bloomberg reports. Sources think the low-margin business, which sells home Wi-Fi routers/adapters and Ethernet switches, could draw interest from TV makers, but expect it to sell for much less than the $500M Cisco paid for Linksys back in '03. The news comes as Cisco tries to increase its reliance on high-margin software/services sales. NetGear (NTGR) could benefit from any turmoil/uncertainty caused by sale efforts. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Wednesday, December 12, 2012, 4:33 PM Like many of its peers, Juniper (JNPR) is betting big on software-defined networking (SDN): the company is issuing 5.82M shares and $57.5M in cash to buy the shares of SDN startup Contrail Systems it doesn't already own; the total valuation is $176M. Contrail, which recently snagged the CTO of Juniper's JUNOS OS, has been in stealth mode, though its blog posts suggest it might be working on an SDN software controller that will compete with VMware's (VMW) Nicira unit, seen as a threat to Cisco and Juniper's hardware margins. Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 2:08 AM Cable infrastructure vendor Arris (ARRS) and U.K. set-top box maker Pace have "made the most compelling bids" for Motorola Mobility's (GOOG) set-top/cable infra unit, Bloomberg reports. A complex financing structure in which Google maintains equity and patents might prevent a deal from closing this year. P-E firms are said to be uninterested in the unit, which has to contend with an industry shift towards cloud-based apps, and potentially costly litigation with TiVo. Cisco's (CSCO) cable unit could benefit from any turmoil related to the sale. (previous) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Thursday, November 29, 2012, 8:55 AM Cisco (CSCO) is acquiring Cariden Technologies, a provider of network management software for carriers, for $141M in cash + retention incentives. Cisco touts the capacity planning/optimization abilities of Cariden's software, which manages both routers and optical networking gear, and says it will complement its nLight platform for jointly provisioning both types of hardware. Cariden competes with OPNET (OPNT), which is set to be acquired by Riverbed (RVBD). Cisco bought two other network management software firms earlier this year (I, II). Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Sunday, November 18, 2012, 7:33 PM Cisco Systems (CSCO) says it intends to buy enterprise Wi-Fi equipment startup Meraki for $1.2B in cash and retention incentives, and to make it into its Cloud Networking Group. The deal's expected to close in Q2 of Cisco's fiscal 2013 (which ends in January). 4 Comments [Tech, Top Stories, M&A]

rodh7858: Not sure if I understand "decided to close itself today". Do you mean some stops got triggered? -
Dhierin Bechai: Somehow there was a stop, that I wouldn't have set there in the first place. I misclicked and set a stop loss. Better luck next time.

$CSCO closed above its 55 day SMA, with a 10 day SMA that curls up and 3 green candles in a row things look quite good for an upward move. - View all 5 replies

rodh7858: Have held CSCO for over 2.5 yrs when I bought it at $20. Has gone nowhere. Only way made money is by collecting div + selling covered calls. -
Dhierin Bechai: Quite sure that if you would go for the shorter rides, it could give a nice gain. Additionally you could short the stock when it goes down.
