- Wednesday, June 12, 11:07 AM Cisco (CSCO +0.3%) is delivering an evolutionary upgrade for its costly CRS core router line. The upgraded routers, named CRS-X, will deliver a 150% increase in capacity/slot, and support 4 100G ports/slot with the help of Cisco's CPAK silicon photonics tech. Cisco also claims the CRS-X will support 64 100G ports per 7' rack, and that this beats the 40 offered by Alcatel-Lucent's (ALU) 7950 router and the 32 by Juniper's (JNPR) T4000; but Alcatel claims to have reached 80. Light Reading recently reported Cisco is prepping a next-gen core routing platform called CTR that (based on reported info) would deliver a 150% capacity/slot increase from the CRS-X. Comment! [Tech]
- Tuesday, June 11, 11:36 AM UBS suggests 11 dividend growing stocks to buy for income; each has a dividend yield of at least 2.5%, has increased its payout ratio by more than 5% during the past year, and has positive consensus EPS growth over the next 12 months: WMB, ESV, NUE, JNJ, CAG, KLAC, CSCO, BBT, AAPL, BAX, F. 2 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, June 11, 7:58 AM Clients were net sellers of stocks in May, according to the TD Ameritrade Investor Movement Index. The gauge declined for a 2nd consecutive month to 5.02 from 5.31 previously. Clients were net buyers across the materials sector (XLB), but reduced exposure elsewhere. After steadily accumulating the stock for months, clients turned net sellers of Apple (AAPL). Other tech names seeing selling: MSFT, CSCO, INTC. Notable buying activity: TSLA, BRK.B, KMP, VALE, LINE. 15 Comments
- Monday, June 10, 1:09 PM iRobot (IRBT +1%) strikes a deal with Cisco (CSCO) to jointly market the company's Ava 500 video collaboration robot, and to integrate it with Cisco's TelePresence offerings. Much like the RP-VITA (aimed at hospitals), the Ava 500 sports an iPad UI, a large HD display, and iRobot's autonomous navigation tech. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, June 7, 8:07 AM TiVo (TIVO) settles with GOOG, CSCO and Arris (TWC), and will receive an upfront payment from Google and Cisco of $490M. Part of money will be used for share repurchases as the board authorizes a doubling of the buyback plan to $200M. Shares to remain halted until 8:20 ET. (PR) 1 Comment [On the Move, Breaking News]
- Wednesday, June 5, 12:11 PM Juniper (JNPR +5.6%) spikes higher after CEO Kevin Johnson states at a BofA/Merrill conference his company is seeing a pickup in carrier router spend. Though Juniper's enterprise security ops struggled in Q1, its service provider sales grew 4% Y/Y, thanks in large part to healthy core/edge router demand. Market leader Cisco (CSCO +0.9%) has moved higher in sympathy. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Breaking News]
- Tuesday, June 4, 7:54 AM Cisco (CSCO) declares $0.17/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 2.79% For shareholders of record July 03.Payable July 24.Ex-div date July 01. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Friday, May 31, 7:08 PM F5's (FFIV) application delivery controller (ADC) share fell to 43% in Q1 from 48% a year earlier, and Citrix's (CTXS) rose to 25% from 16%, estimates UBS after going over calendar Q1 results and industry data from Dell'Oro. Citrix has been leveraging its new partnership with Cisco to gain ADC share; F5 is counting on a pending mid-range refresh to strengthen its hand. Meanwhile, Riverbed (RVBD) is believed to have seen its share of the WAN optimization hardware market fall to 40% from 43%, as F5 grew its share to 7%. Cisco (CSCO) is estimated to have a 19%-20% WAN optimization share, and a 23% security hardware share. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, May 31, 6:53 PM Cisco (CSCO) is prepping a successor to its costly/high-margin CRS-3 core router that will be called the CTR and offer up to 1Tb/s of capacity per slot, according to a document ontained by Light Reading. That figure represents a solid increase from the CRS-3's 400Gb/s per slot, and is also above the 800Gb/s delivered by Alcatel-Lucent's (ALU) 7950 core router, launched last year to much fanfare and PR mudslinging. Juniper's (JNPR) T4000 is at 240Gb/s per slot. The CTR is also said to support Cisco's CPAK silicon photonics modules, which some analysts (though not all) view as a threat to JDS Uniphase (JDSU) and Finisar (FNSR). Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 29, 2:09 PM Global server sales fell 5% Y/Y in Q1, says Gartner. That's a reversal from Q4's 5% growth, and evidence of both weak IT spending and a shift towards cheaper hardware. #1 IBM, whose hardware unit had an ugly Q1, saw its revenue share fall 250 bps Y/Y to 25.5%. #2 H-P (HPQ), hurt by crumbling Itanium server demand, saw its share fall 280 bps to 25%, and #5 Oracle (ORCL), hit hard by plunging UNIX server sales, saw a 130 bps drop to 4.6%. But #3 Dell's (DELL) share rose 310 bps to 18%, and Cisco (CSCO) cracked the unit share top-5 at 2.3%. The buying habits of Internet companies led non-top-5 vendors to make up 22% of sales, up 370 bps. Sales of x86 servers (mostly INTC-based) grew 1.8%, down from Q4's 6.6%. (IDC's Q4 data) 3 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 29, 12:54 PM Datatec (DTTLF.PK), the South African computer-networking firm which primarily installs Cisco (CSCO) products, is "a pure rand hedge" for South African rand investors, according to CEO Jens Montanana. The company's share price rise is correlating .85 (1.0 would be perfect) to the fall of the rand vs. the U.S. dollar. Montanana says the company is beginning to consider U.S. acquisitions. Related ETFs: AFK, CEW. Comment!
- Wednesday, May 29, 9:20 AM Cisco's (CSCO) software M&A spree continues: the company's latest target is JouleX, a developer of energy management tools for data center hardware (inc. Cisco gear) and PCs that's being acquired for $107M in cash + incentives. The purchase comes at a time when energy-efficiency has turned into a top priority for IT admins thanks to soaring power and cooling needs. Cisco asserts JouleX's software complements its EnergyWise tools, and gives companies the ability to monitor energy use without installing hardware meters of software agents on devices. (yesterday) (Cloupia acquisition) Comment! [Tech, M&A]
- Tuesday, May 28, 6:51 PM Talks with Cisco (CSCO) customers and rivals at the CTIA trade show reinforced Pac Crest's view the networking giant's software M&A binge leave it well-positioned to help major carriers "automate, orchestrate and virtualize different physical elements of the network." The firm adds that while overall carrier capex is mixed, "pockets of growth" are being found in the U.S. Cisco managed to see 8% Y/Y carrier order growth in FQ3, a likely sign of share gains. Meanwhile, both Stifel and Pac Crest see SBA (SBAC) as a beneficiary of strong cell tower leasing activity from U.S. carriers. The firms also see small cell deployments giving a lift SBA and its rivals (AMT, CCI). (CSCO acquisitions: I, II, III) Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, May 23, 7:14 AM Cisco (CSCO) is reaffirmed a Buy with $26 price target at Citigroup which says the firm's economic leverage is under-appreciated. More earnings surprises could drive the shares to $30, says the team. Cisco off 1% premarket, inline with the Nasdaq 100. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, May 17, 12:14 PM A revenue miss and light guidance lead Brocade (BRCD -4.2%) to slump. On its earnings call, Brocade guided for FQ3 revenue of $510M-$530M and EPS of $0.11-$0.13, below a consensus of $556M and $0.15. The company partly blames soft storage array sales from OEM partners (IBM, H-P, and Dell appear to be culprits, NetApp could be another). Brocade's storage switch division sales (69% of total) fell 10% Q/Q and 6% Y/Y in FQ2, in spite of growing demand for 16G Fibre Channel switches (Brocade has had a big lead on Cisco (CSCO) here, but Cisco is finally catching up). Ethernet switch division sales -4% Q/Q and +15% Y/Y. Comment! [Tech, On the Move, Earnings]
- Friday, May 17, 10:16 AM Aruba (ARUN -26.8%) is slammed with 9 downgrades after providing light guidance to go with its FQ3 results. Aruba is "likely dealing with a multi-quarter, if not structural, change in its competitive landscape and growth rate," writes Needham, cutting shares to Hold. Wells Fargo, downgrading to Market Perform, notes Cisco (CSCO - 27% Y/Y Wi-Fi growth in FQ3) is extending its efforts to bundle Wi-Fi hardware with other enterprise gear to Europe/Asia, and that Aruba plans to invest more to compete better. Along with the report, Aruba announced it's buying Meridian Apps, a developer of mapping/navigation software for hotels, subways, hospitals, etc. (transcript) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
