Network/Virtualization Security: Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine [view article]
Timmy: I have a 5 year old so let me give it a shot. With virtualization applications and operating systems are no longer coupled with hardware... they can move around from server to server, etc With mere mouse clicks). That enables a tremendous amount of flexibility, which enables substantial cost savings... because enterprises won't have to purchase more hardware (and space, electricity) than they need and they can make changes more easily.

As enterprises move to these virtual data centers, their network hardware will have to adapt to this new, fluid world of change. Many of these network security solutions require custom hardware, so it may be difficult with them to keep up or be positioned in the right place to deliver equivalent protection.

Securing a "fabric" of servers that can all communicate with each other (where the biggest savings of virtualization will be) is very different from inspecting traffic running between a dedicated pool of servers and the network or another pool.

Netsec hardware vendors will not only have to tackle the problem of larger traffic spikes across a wider and more fluid environment, but will also have to keep up with heightened change. Those that require manual tuning/management will keep security pros even busier merely managing change.

Then there is the question of where these devices will be inserted in the data center in order to be effective. Can VMs communicate with each other (be compromised) without a security appliance even knowing? Could copies of compromised servers then be made and moved for malicious purposes, behind or around security measures?

VMW has introduced some dramatic new capabilities for managing data centers. If the security solutions can adapt and the security pros understand the security differences between the physical data center world and virtual, data center security will be improved by virtualization. Network security pros will enjoy many of the same benefits as the server ops teams (enhanced flexibility and performance). This depends on security solutions ability to be re-architected for these new demands and the success of some hot private companies in the virtsec space.

I think I exceeded the vocab and comprehension of a typical 4 year old... but then I sensed that you were actually much older. SO I hope this explanation helps. You can get more info at archimedius.net.

    Thanks,
    Greg

Good article. Difficult to understand. Can you explain it to me like I'm four years old? I own both EMC and VMware. Reply

2008 Bespoke Market Poll: Chance of Recession 50/50 [view article]
Thoreau: "A man more right than his neighbors, constitutes a majority of one."

My majority includes Hussman, Shiller, Roubini and as of last night John Mauldin.

If someone is to perform open heart surgery on you do you want a caucus of average citizens or the expert?

Someone was performing open heart surgery on you portfolio these last 3 days ...I hope you picked the expert.

2008 Bespoke Market Poll: Chance of Recession 50/50 [view article]
I hope that the 50% who say there will not be a recession are right. I ma just curious to hear the case for that. We have close to a melt down in the financial markets (ok its gotten a bit better with a massive infusion of funds), the auto industry is on its butt...and housing...well we all know about that.

These three sectors are a huge part of the US economy. What sectors or sector is going to keep humming along so as to escape the recession.

I assume the only response is the consumer. But, at some point isn't the consumer consumed. Home equity maxed out, wages not going to well, unemployment going up...and credit cards maxed as well.

I would love to hear the counter side of this.

There is virtually no movie select for NetFlix Instant Viewing. I have been a subscriber for 6 months and enjoy the concept and delivery method of NetFlix's instant viewing, honestly it is very clear and never lags. A set-top delivery mechanism would be a welcomed addition to my home, ONLY if they can build a decent selection. That's priority. Reply

My comments to the WSJ "recession" Poll of economists posted both at WSJ.com and

    mnrtrading.blogspot.co...

stated that there was no consensus and that the arithmetic averaging of "sentiment" with actual modeling results is statistically incorrect. The 50-50 results you reported here are consistent with the notion that nobody knows, but should not be presented as a probability of recession.

"we asked a number of stock market and economic questions to get a consensus from the intelligent part of the investment community"

In light of the results of your survey, you might want to reconsider this assertion.

With Peak Oil looming (or already upon us) and the $USD facing an easy-money Fed and strong inflationary headwinds, sub-$100 oil or a strong dollar is not a bet I would take.

On the bright side, 66% of the readers surveyed don't see a market bottom in housing anytime soon, which means they are probably capable of reading a chart (as in Case-Shiller or Credit-Suisse ARM-reset).

Jim Cramer's Mad Money In-Depth, 1/2/08: A Look Back, A Look Ahead [view article]
I don't understand how Cramer came up with a 16% + return on his picks in 2007. Apple was up 150%+ & he had another good winner but lost 50% in LVLT & Rite Aid. Did he put equal $$ into each of his picks ?
What methodology did he use ?

Very different story on RAD and LVLT from original tout, recall that these were to be two really big winners for '07. I think he's a much better clown than stock picker. I nominate Cramer for the Red Skelton re-incarnation award of '07. Now that would be great if he were on NBC and not Cnbc. Reply

One group of consumers who are already willing to add another device to the home theater array are TIVO customers. These customers appear to be loyal and willing to pay for an improved feature set that exists beyond the traditional cable options. A Netflix/TIVO partnership would seem to strengthen both companies position and offerings in their apparent mutual customer base. Downside, of course, would be the current alienation of most SAT customers. Reply

Jim Cramer is an idiot. He flip-flops like crazy. If he was a real analyst he'd say stick with Cisco and the market will finally get it right in 2008. Cisco didn't underperform financially in 2007...the market failed to value it a reasonable multiple. If Cramer doesn't think the market will eventually correct itself as a rational value-determining mechanism, he should just literally start throwing darts at stock lists on his show. Reply

The problem with the current download service is not that it's confined to your PC, it's that they have virtually no movies I want to watch.

I would LOVE to not pay Time Warner $4.99 per on-demand movie viewing. But without a broader selection of content, changing the delivery mechanism will not help.

I do hope Cramer has a very successful year with his stock picks. Millions of viewer's purchase shares that he suggests without any knowledge of the stock market. Although he states do your homework, and review the stock often, investors in general are lazy. This is their fault not Jim's, yet
the finger pointing is inevitable because he is on stage not them. He accepted the position and must
remember, that all eyes are upon him. However, I
believe as he stated, that "you must learn from the past", that himself should slow down a bit and be a little more cautiously optimistic about his statements regarding his stock selections.
Otherwise the factor of health becomes an issue
and can lead to unnecessary stress which can take it's toll on anyone.
So Good luck and have a bull year Jim
P.S. Maybe you should have a panel of experts on your show, like Fast Money.
