By Doug Young

Solar panel makers are finally seeing signs that the clouds could be lifting from their embattled sector, sparking a stock rally for their volatile shares. Canadian Solar (CSIQ) led off the upbeat news, releasing preliminary results that included better-than-expected first-quarter sales and margins. But perhaps more importantly, other reports said the industry is seeing some of its first sustained price increases after more than 2 years of declines. Those 2 pieces of good news ignited a rally for solar shares, led by Canadian Solar whose stock rose more than 12 percent to a new high not seen for more than a year and a half. Shares of JA Solar (JASO) also rose a healthy 11 percent, while Trina Solar (TSL) was up 7.5 percent. Even embattled LDK (LDK) shared in the gains, rising 8 percent in the rally.

Let's start with Canadian Solar,

So far, FSLR is the most successful PV player competing with producers of other thin-film technologies and crystalline silicon (c-Si) products. Due to CdTe module's characteristics of low cost and low efficiency, FSLR could only serve the utility-scale generation segment and is not able to reach the distributed generation application which requires high-efficiency modules in tight space constraints. In this acquisition announcement, it is said that TetraSun has developed a particular cell architecture capable of conversion efficiencies exceeding 21% with commercial-scale manufacturing costs comparable to conventional multicrystalline silicon solar cells. Most investors perceive this acquisition as a positive sign of FSLR's upward swing and are optimistic with FSLR's earnings growth. Jim Hughes, CEO of First Solar, said:

GCL-Poly is also a coal-fired and solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant investor and operator. Though agreement details were not disclosed, YGE would purchase polysilicon material and wafer from GCL-Poly that would, in turn, buy modules from YGE for PV power projects. This is said to leverage advantages in the whole PV value chain for both parties, but it is more important for YGE to move away from its vertical integration strategy and to seek partnerships for product manufacturing cost down with no quality compromise. YGE is a believer of the PV vertical integration business model especially when polysilicon is priced at high level. However, there is no clarity on how the bankruptcy will proceed as Suntech factories are still operating. Suntech used to be the largest solar panel maker in the world with more than 10,000 employees. It is difficult for the local government to let the solar producer simply die without taking some action. The stock saw a massive surge in volume and price yesterday due to a rumor about Warren Buffett buying the company. Introduction

First Solar (FSLR) is the most valued solar panel company with a market capitalization in excess of 2 billion dollars. However, this thin film player may not hold this position for long in our view. The company's solar technology is under threat from the mainstream crystalline solar technology which accounts for more than 90% of the global solar panel shipments. The cost cuts implemented by the Chinese solar players have far outpaced the cost improvements made by First Solar in the last 5 years. The costs of the lowest cost Chinese companies such as Canadian Solar (CSIQ) has reached 55c/watt compared to >65c/watt cost for First Solar panels. These costs also do not factor in the negative effect of the lower efficiency FSLR thin solar panels. The lower efficiency implies that the Balance of Systems (BOS) costs for FSLR panels are much higher, compared to the crystalline solar

In our research, we looked at how solar companies typically do in the month of December to find any seasonal patterns. We looked at the average gains of eleven companies as well as their max drawdowns and gains for the past 10 years provided the company has been public during that period. December, unlike October, has been historically positive for solar companies as the subsequent analysis will show. The companies we investigated in the report were Yingli Green Energy Holding Company (YGE), Trina Solar Limited (TSL), Suntech Power Holdings Company (STP), SunPower Corporation (SPWR), ReneSola Ltd (SOL), MEMC Electronic Materials (WFR), LDK Solar Company (LDK), JA Solar Holdings Company (JASO), GT Advanced Technologies (GTAT), First Solar, Inc.
