- Monday, May 13, 10:24 AM It's time to take profits on Ctrip (CTRP -2.8%), argues Goldman, which cutting shares to Neutral following last Thursday big post-earnings rally. Though Goldman still sees Ctrip posting a 20% EPS CAGR from 2014-2017, it no longer sees "material return upside" relative to peers such as Baidu, Tencent, and New Oriental. It also thinks favorable Q2/Q3 seasonality will be partly offset by price competition and R&D/marketing investments. Shares trade at 18x Goldman's 2014E EPS estimate. 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]

[On the Move] - Thursday, May 9, 9:19 AM Ctrip (CTRP) +16.6% following its Q1 beat. The Chinese travel bookings site is guiding for 15%-20% Y/Y Q2 revenue growth, below a 20.6% consensus. But expectations have been depressed by concerns about price competition, and the Street might view guidance as conservative following a string of beats. Q1 gross margin was 74%, flat Q/Q and down 100 bps Y/Y. Hotel bookings revenue +23% Y/Y, plane tickets +27%, packaged tours +41%, corporate travel +31% - all 4 growth rates were faster than Q4's. eLong (LONG) could rally in sympathy. - Monday, April 29, 6:59 AM President Obama is expected to sign a bill sometime today to give the FAA ability to end its furlough of 13K air traffic controllers. Typos delayed delivery of the bill to the White House. Airline stocks (FAA) and hotel stocks (CHH, CTRP, H, HOT, IHG, MAR, WYN) are viewed by analysts as getting a boost from the return to normalcy in the travel industry. Comment! [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Thursday, April 25, 9:49 AM Hotel company lobbyists are in Washington to protest the impact of the furlough of FAA employees on the industry and voice its opinion on immigration bills. The sector is particularly concerned with keeping up its momentum with business travel as the industry has seen RevPAR (revenue per available room) start to move in the right direction. Lodging stocks: CHH, CTRP, H, HOT, IHG, MAR, WYN. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, April 15, 2:48 PM Baidu (BIDU -1.2%) has reportedly taken part in a $57M funding round for its Qunar Chinese online travel unit. Baidu bought a majority stake in Qunar for $306M in 2011. Since then, the business has taken off, with Qunar (according to Baidu, at least) having recently passed Ctrip (CTRP) as China's top airfare bookings site, though it has recently had to contend with a boycott from partners upset about pricing/policy changes. Qunar, believed to be plotting a much-delayed IPO, also competes with Alibaba and eLong (LONG); the latter is backed by Tencent. 1 Comment [Tech]

Gross margin was 74%, down from 76% in Q3 and Q4 '11. Hotel reservation sales (40% of total) +17% Y/Y, up from +11% in Q3 - a 36% increase in volume offset a 14% drop in commission/room (evidence of price competition). Plane ticket booking sales (39% of total) +18%, down from +24% in Q3. CTRP +3.5% AH - expectations had fallen thanks to bearish comments from Oppenheimer. CC at 8PM ET (webcast). Comment! [Tech, Earnings]
