To meet demand for tires in the Americas, German auto supplier Continental AG (CTTAY.PK) is investing $224M in an Illinois plant to substantially boost output. The company's also gotten approval for a new tire plant in the southern U.S.

The quake-driven Japanese auto-parts shortage ripples to Europe, as continental automakers - including PSA Peugeot Citroen (PEUGY.PK), Daimler (DAI) and Volkswagen (VLKAY.PK) - may need to halt production in coming weeks. There's less dual-sourcing going on there than you might expect.
