- Friday, June 7, 12:10 PM IBM has successfully protested a $600M, 10-year deal granted by the CIA to Amazon Web Services (AMZN +3.6%) to develop a private cloud infrastructure: the GAO says the CIA didn't properly evaluate prices and waived a contract requirement. This means IBM, now set to acquire AWS rival SoftLayer, will have another chance to win the deal. Meanwhile, Forrester's James Staten argues IBM/SoftLayer will face integration challenges, due to their use of rival cloud platforms (IBM uses OpenStack, SoftLayer uses Citrix's (CTXS) CloudStack) and other issues. "SoftLayer ... has two separate portals and a mix of API sets ... IBM has long been accused of being well integrated only so long as you ask IBM Global Services to do the integration work." Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, June 6, 9:09 AM Oracle (ORCL), Citrix (CTXS), and VMware (VMW) are downgraded to Sell by Berenberg. Oracle and Citrix are off fractionally, while VMware is up 3.1% in response to COO Carl Eschenbach's reassuring talk at a BofA/Merrill conference. Oracle's FQ4 report arrives on June 20. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 5, 10:44 AM An upgrade to Buy from Goldman provides a lift to Citrix (CTXS +2%): analyst Heather Bellini declares expectations reset following an 8% drop in the wake of Citrix's Q1 miss and light EPS guidance. Bellini argues lower expectations for desktop (i.e. thin client/PC virtualization software) license growth and ongoing momentum for Citrix's NetScaler application delivery controllers spells a favorable risk/reward. Along with her upgrades of Citrix and Salesforce, Bellini is raising her broader outlook for the software sector to Attractive from Neutral. Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, June 5, 9:36 AM VMware (VMW -0.9%) gets cut to Hold by Deutsche's Nandan Amladi, who's worried about competition, billings growth, and execution. VMware's vSphere virtualization platform "continues to face pricing pressures from [Microsoft's] Hyper-V," and the rise of OpenStack is "driving up adoption" of Citrix's (CTXS) Xen virtualization software and the Linux-based KVM. Lastly, checks "indicate a fair amount of interest" in Microsoft's (MSFT) System Center management tools, which compete with parts of VMware's vCloud Suite. IDC estimates VMware's virtualization share fell to 56.8% in 2012, and Microsoft's rose to 27.5%. (cash flow guidance) (Craig-Hallum) 6 Comments [Tech]
- Friday, May 31, 7:08 PM F5's (FFIV) application delivery controller (ADC) share fell to 43% in Q1 from 48% a year earlier, and Citrix's (CTXS) rose to 25% from 16%, estimates UBS after going over calendar Q1 results and industry data from Dell'Oro. Citrix has been leveraging its new partnership with Cisco to gain ADC share; F5 is counting on a pending mid-range refresh to strengthen its hand. Meanwhile, Riverbed (RVBD) is believed to have seen its share of the WAN optimization hardware market fall to 40% from 43%, as F5 grew its share to 7%. Cisco (CSCO) is estimated to have a 19%-20% WAN optimization share, and a 23% security hardware share. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, May 16, 12:16 PM Cisco JV partner EMC (EMC +4.5%) joins the list of companies rallying in response to Cisco's FQ3 beat and guidance. Cisco mentioned on its earnings call integrated hardware solutions such as Vblock (offered by the Cisco/EMC VCE JV) are driving demand for its UCS servers - Cisco's UCS unit saw 77% Y/Y rev. growth. All in all, it's a good day for enterprise IT names, who are happy to receive some good earnings news after getting plenty of bad news (I, II, III, IV). HPQ +1.7%. IBM +1.3%. ORCL +1.3%. VMW +2.6%. TIBX +4.1%. CTXS +3.9%. CRM +3.8%. JIVE +4.1%. NTGR +2.7%. CVLT +2.6%. INFA +3%. (others rallying: I, II) 1 Comment [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 25, 11:05 AM Light FQ3 guidance isn't stopping F5 (FFIV +5%) from rallying in the wake of its FQ2 report; expectations were depressed thanks to the April 4 warning. On F5's earnings call, management insisted enterprise demand is healthy ahead of a mid-range application delivery controller (ADC) refresh and an update to F5's TMOS OS, even as U.S. telco and federal demand remains weak. Strong momentum was also claimed for F5's firewall and 4G infrastructure offerings. Nomura has upgraded shares to Buy, arguing "the market may be overstating the competitive risks to F5" from Citrix (CTXS - previous). Up in sympathy: RDWR +4%. RVBD +4.8%. Comment! - Thursday, April 4, 4:38 PM F5 (FFIV) resumes trading and is currently at $75.85, down 16.1% AH in response to its FQ2 warning, which (in the wake of Oracle's results) is bound to heighten concerns about U.S./European enterprise IT demand. - Wednesday, March 27, 4:26 PM Much like they did last week following Oracle's FQ3 miss, some enterprise IT names are selling off AH following Red Hat's FQ4 revenue miss, which was accompanied by slowing deferred revenue growth. CTXS -2%. VMW -1.9%. FFIV -1.1%. RVBD -2.1%. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Tuesday, March 26, 4:08 PM A Virginia federal jury has cleared LogMeIn (LOGM +19.6%) of infringing a remote PC access patent asserted by 01 Communique. LogMeIn's victory could have implications for 01's suit against thin client/PC virtualization software leader Citrix (CTXS). (PR) (earlier) Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
