While most newspapers are clamoring for any ads they can get, Newsday turns down a lucrative contract from Verizon (VZ), a direct competitor of parent company Cablevision (CVC). Newsday also rejected other ads critical of Cablevision decisions.

The Supreme Court refuses to hear a challenge by TV networks and film studios to a next-gen DVR from Cablevision (CVC +2.2%). The recorder, storing programs on Cablevision servers instead of in the living room, promises to lower the price of DVR service.

According to a recent report, more than 40% of adults under 35 watch internet TV, which should have cable companies worried. "If more content comes online for free, you can bet that more people will join us as 'Hulu households' instead of spending $80 a month on digital cable." (TWC, CVC, CMCSA)

TiVo (TIVO), largely credited with killing TV advertising, is embracing it. Its competitors in selling interactive ads include Cablevision (CVC), Cox, and DirecTV Group (DTV).

"It's a small victory," Peter Kafka writes of Cablevision's (CVC) $402M writedown on its acquisition of Newsday - which was less than the $450M feared. Newsday actually generated $107M in revenue and cash flow of $10.3M - so if CVC hadn't overpaid for the newspaper last summer, it would have turned a decent profit.
