In promoting his company's ultrabook efforts, an Intel (INTC) product manager talks up the importance of touchscreen support, adding the chip giant is "strongly encouraging" OEMs to include touchscreens in upcoming ultrabooks. That's a positive for touchscreen controller vendors ATML and CY, who have been dinged by soft high-end Android tablet sales. Steve Jobs, for his part, wasn't a fan of putting touchscreens on notebooks.

Apple (AAPL) has decided to keep the 16GB versions of the iPad 2 around at price points of $399 (Wi-Fi only) and $529 (Wi-Fi/3G). The price cuts stand to make life even more difficult for rival high-end tablet vendors, which in turn could spell trouble for chip suppliers such as NVDA, ATML, and CY. However, Barnes & Noble (BKS +4.8%), whose Nook Tablet goes for $199-$249, is actually spiking higher. Amazon (AMZN +1.5%) is largely unchanged. (more)

Rival touchscreen controller vendor Atmel (ATML) is also having a rough time (I, II).

Nomura's Romit Shah is impressed with the ultrabooks he's seen at CES, and while he's maintaining his Reduce rating on Intel (INTC), he argues ultrabook proliferation could boost Atmel (ATML) and Cypress (CY), whose touch controller chips go into them. Should ultrabooks account for 40% of laptop sales, as Intel hopes, Shah believes the addressable market for touch controllers could grow by $300M-$500M.
