- Sunday, January 20, 6:49 AM American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK), Delta (DAL) and United Airlines (UAL) are among the carriers whose flights to and from London's Heathrow Airport have been cancelled because of heavy snow. Overall, 260 flights were due to be scrapped today after over 400 were axed on Friday and well over 100 yesterday. No doubt the snowstorm, like the Queen's jubilee celebrations last year, will be trotted out to explain why U.K. GDP could have been higher. 11 Comments [Consumer, Global & FX]
- Thursday, January 17, 8:18 AM Flying high? Barclays is out with a positive note on the airline sector, saying stocks could rise 20% on a mix of higher fares and lower jet fuel prices. Investors should also keep an eye on the merger front. With all signs pointing to an eventual marriage between American Airlines and US Airways, future industry consolidation/partnerships could still be on tap. A particular focus will be on Washington DC to see if rules governing foreign ownership of U.S. carriers are relaxed. Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, January 16, 8:50 AM Though consumer prices remained flat in December, airline fares kept up their slow march higher to notch a 2.1% rise for the year. Analysts note the ARCA Airline Index (XAL) is up 10% YTD and could have the legs to run higher as fare hikes trickle down to the bottom lines of carriers. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, January 11, 6:15 PM WSJ's Middle Seat blog is out with its scorecard of airline rankings for 2012, and the industry overall showed a bit of improvement. The Delta (DAL) flying experience, on average, went to good from bad over the past two years, but other airlines - notably United (UAL) and American (AAMRQ.PK) - suffered miserable years when measured in six performance categories. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, January 8, 6:54 AM Virgin Atlantic taps American Airlines exec Craig Keeger to become its new CEO. The carrier is looking to expand its global reach after Delta Air Lines (DAL) took a 49% stake in it last month. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, January 3, 7:01 AM In a year-end memo to employees, Delta Air Lines (DAL) CEO Richard Anderson promises the airline will advance its position in 2013 by controlling spending and improving operations. The exec also notes the carrier will start to retire its 50-seat regional jets as new aircraft starts to arrive later in the year. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, December 31, 2012, 9:43 AM Airline stocks climb higher after a merger between American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK) and US Airways gets the tentative backing of American's pilots. Though Congress has a lot on its plate, industry watchers see the potential for looser rules on foreign ownership of domestic carriers as a potential boost for M&A activity in the sector during the coming year. Advancers: LCC +2.0%, DAL +2.0%, UAL +1.2%. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, December 17, 2012, 9:47 AM Airline stocks race to early gains after Dahlman Rose issues a sweeping upgrade on the sector. Advancers include JetBlue (JBLU +3.1%), United Continental (UAL +3.3%), US Airways (LCC +1.1%), and Delta Air Lines (DAL +2.3%). The bullish call from the firm: "We're going all in." 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, December 17, 2012, 6:57 AM Dahlman Rose takes a shine to the airline sector, upgrading United Continental (UAL) and Delta Air Lines (DAL) to Buy from Hold while lifting JetBlue (JBLU) to Hold from Sell. A rosy forecast on demand issued last week from the IATA is still resonating in the sector. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 2:34 PM The IATA's forecast for 2012 airline industry profits lit a charge under stocks in the sector for the day, but the group also sees clear skies ahead in 2013. Fuel prices should fall lower and passenger demand will increase by 4.5%, according to IATA estimates. Things are even rosier for North American carriers, with profits expected to jump 42% Y/Y to $3.4B. In the big picture, the targeted capacity cuts at airlines may finally stay to pay dividends. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, December 13, 2012, 9:51 AM Airline stocks trade higher after IATA raises its profit forecast for the sector. The trade group says it expects airlines to hit a profit level of $6.7B this year, up from a prior estimate of $4.1B. The lift is due to "improving efficiency and restructuring," says IATA director-general Tony Tyler. 1 Comment [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 8:53 AM Shares of Delta Air Lines (DAL) trade 1.6% higher premarket following the announcement of the carrier's strategic alliance with Virgin Atlantic Airways. Industry watchers say the deal is a minor blip on the radar while they wait for the real game changer to come down the pipe, the still-percolating US Airways-American merger. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 8:17 AM Delta Air Lines (DAL) to buy a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic from Singapore Airlines, subject to U.S. and EU antitrust approval. The $360M move "creates an expanded trans-Atlantic network" with 31 peak-day round-trip flights. (PR) Yesterday, Virgin founder Richard Branson bet the boss of BA-owner International Airlines Group £1M Virgin will still be around in 5 years. 1 Comment [Breaking News, Consumer]
- Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 5:57 AM Delta Air Lines (DAL) will reportedly pay $300-500M for Singapore Airlines' 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic, well below the £600M ($966M) that Singapore shelled out when it acquired the holding in 1999. Meanwhile, Richard Branson bets Willie Walsh £1M that the Virgin Atlantic brand will still exist in five years after the British Airways chief says it won't if Delta buys the stake. Walsh says he'd rather bet a knee in the groin. 1 Comment [Consumer, M&A]
- Monday, December 10, 2012, 6:15 AM Virgin Atlantic and Delta Air Lines (DAL) will reportedly form a code- and revenue-sharing agreement on transatlantic flights should the U.S. carrier buy Singapore Airlines' (SINGY.PK) 49% holding in the U.K. operator. Richard Branson isn't looking to sell any of his 51% stake in Virgin despite apparent interest from Air France-KLM (AFLYY.PK). (previous) Comment! [M&A, Consumer]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 6:45 AM The state of California sues Delta Air Lines (DAL) over allegations the carrier doesn't warn customers it collects sensitive information on them through its mobile app. The legal action is the first test of the Online Privacy Protection Act in the state. 2 Comments [Consumer]

Falling oil prices would be good for US Airways (LCC), which also is rumored to be planning a merge with Delta (DAL). - View all 2 replies

Luckydad: MB, isn't the US/Delta merger old news? Have seen something to reignite the rumor. I think USAir is down due to fuel costs being up. -
Michael Bryant: Yeah, I think I first read about the merger two weeks ago. And yes, so lower oil will lower fuel costs.
