Apple (AAPL) roundup: 1) HTC, which has a relatively weak patent hand, says it has no plans to settle with Apple following the Samsung verdict. The fact Apple doesn't seem interested in seriously negotiating with Android OEMs could be a reason why. 2) Delta Air Lines (DAL) plans to deploy 4,500 iPads at its 3 airport hubs to provide information and food/beverage services to travelers. 3) Apple is reportedly planning an AirPlay upgrade that will allow music to be streamed to speakers via Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi.

Besides disrupting oil production in the Gulf of Mexico, Tropical Storm Isaac also starts to wreak havoc with airline flights. According to flight tracker Flight Aware, over 1K flights have been cancelled over the last two days. The longer the storm meanders in the Gulf, the bigger the hit carriers will take for the quarter as their refund policies broaden beyond the coverage of insurance.

Airline stocks trade higher again, even with crude oil prices showing resiliency lately. Analysts are divided if a fare hike by legacy carriers or a more broad warming up to the sector from investors on consolidation and labor progress is behind the resurgence. Leading the pack: LCC +6.4%, DAL +3.7%, UAL +1.3%, ALK +1.2%.

Southwest Airlines (LUV +3.5%) raises its air fares on shorter flights, prompting a flurry of corresponding ticket price hikes by legacy carriers such as American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK), United Continental (LCC +5.4%), and US Airways (LCC +4.9%). Last week a hike by Delta (DAL +2.9%) didn't take hold across the sector, which is nothing new with low-cost carriers such as Southwest, JetBlue (JBLU +3.4%), Spirit (SAVE +1.5%), and Allegiant (ALGT +1.6%) typically acting as the trendsetters for the group.

Consolidation, narrower debt loads, and emerging labor cost controls are the factors that could set up a sector rally if everything takes off on time, according to analysts. Advancers: JBLU +1.6%, UAL +3.5%, LUV +1.9%, DAL +2.5%, LCC +3.4%.

Delta Air Lines (DAL) says its Comair unit will cease operations after Sept. 29, citing a shift away from regional jets towards more mainline flying. DAL will reduce the number of 50-seat regional jets to 125 or fewer from nearly 350, but notes that Comair accounts for ~1% of its network capacity and that there will be no significant adjustments to its flight schedule or locations served.

Should the tight regulation on foreign ownership of U.S. airlines be reconsidered? That's the question posed by industry watcher George Hobica as he can't help but notice the bubbly profits and efficiencies the beer industry kicks up with foreign ownership the norm. Though national security has to be a consideration in the equation, so do endless years of unprofitability and bankruptcies.
