Forex Trader Note: Near-term moves in Asian trading have not managed to get the four-hour global market momentum reads out of neutral mode. Most currencies are overbought against the Usd, on low momentum. Forex pairs will now require a boost from oil and S&P trade to hold the recent moves that came on thin order flows overnight.

The near-term technical reads show a market that is selling dollars on light volume. We will look for a reversal on euro, cable, and swissy before things can move too much further. Aussie and cad have not reacted to gold moving through $1100, and oil has not moved to back the short-dollar play. Neutral momentum and an oversold dollar, on a Monday, with not all major pairs aligned, is not a reliable read especially when Dax and S&P futures are not moving too far.

        The LFB submits:

Complete Story »

The dollar has been decimated over the last six months as investors have piled into global stock markets. In hindsight, the risk seems to have been worth it, with stock markets in the US, China and Europe exceeding gains of 50% since the March 2009 lows. There has been much talk of correction or crash since stocks began to rise, to no avail. Markets, regardless of forward looking economic fundamentals, have continued to edge up.

In March 2009, the daily sentiment index showed there were 2% bulls. Today, we have the opposite extreme, with a 90% investor bullishness. As the dollar collapsed during the stock market rally, sentiment has also swung to the opposite extreme. Mac Slavo submits:
The dollar has been decimated over the last six months as investors have piled into global stock markets. In hindsight, the risk seems to have been worth it, with stock markets in the US, China and Europe exceeding gains of 50% since the March 2009 lows. There has been much talk of correction or crash since stocks began to rise, to no avail. Markets, regardless of forward looking economic fundamentals, have continued to edge up.

In March 2009, the daily sentiment index showed there were 2% bulls. Today, we have the opposite extreme, with a 90% investor bullishness. Many applaud this dollar weakening as a way to spur exports and economic growth. Martin Feldstein, the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors under President Reagan, has written that a more “competitive” or weaker U.S. dollar is good for America.

I cannot overstate how strongly I disagree with this position. “Strong Dollar, Strong Country” is more than a mantra for me, since economic history indicates that no country has ever achieved greatness, nor maintained it, by debasing its currency. Have you ever heard of a country in deep economic trouble because of a strong currency? In short, the value of a nation’s currency is a reflection of the perceived value of the country in the global marketplace.
