- Monday, March 25, 2:17 PM NTT DoCoMo (DCM) is launching a China-specific version of its d-game mobile gaming service within China Mobile's (CHL) Mobile Market portal. 20 titles will be supported at launch time. The announcement comes 8 months after DoCoMo formed a mobile content JV with Chinese search kingpin Baidu. The Japanese carrier has a long history of striking mobile data services deals with foreign peers, with mixed results. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, March 6, 9:13 AM Foxconn has begun production of an iPhone 5S (AAPL) that looks much like the iPhone 5, claims Japanese blog MacOtakara, which has a mixed track record (I, II) with iScoops. MacOtakara also reports NTT DoCoMo (DCM) has slashed Android phone orders for the fall, which is fueling speculation an iPhone deal is on the way. Jefferies' Peter Misek argued last month preparation for March iPhone 5S production could be responsible for new iPhone order cuts. Possible/likely suppliers: CRUS, OVTI, SWKS, TQNT, AVGO, QCOM, BRCM, NTE, MFLX, LPL. (yesterday) 29 Comments [Tech]
- Tuesday, January 29, 8:08 PM Japanese stocks move up again today, piggybacking gains for the broader U.S. market earlier today. The Nikkei Average is currently up 0.9% to 10,958, with Telecoms leading gains: Softbank (SFTBF.PK +2.8%), KDDI (KDDIY.PK +2.6%), NTT DoCoMo (DCM +0.8%) and Nippon Telegraph & Telephone (NTT + 0.7%). Energy also trade higher: Japan Petroleum (JPTXF.PK +2.7%), and Inpex (IPXHY.PK +1.1%). Comment! [Global & FX]
- Friday, January 11, 12:06 PM Is Apple (AAPL -0.5%) finally close to scoring an iPhone deal with NTT DoCoMo (DCM)? The president of the top Japanese carrier, which has been bleeding share to iPhone-carrying SoftBank (SFTBF.PK) and KDDI, says his company is willing to sell the iPhone if it can reach a mutually beneficial deal. DoCoMo and Apple have reportedly been at odds in the past over Apple's purchase requirements and DoCoMo's insistence on pre-installing some of its apps. (China Mobile) 10 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, January 3, 1:51 PM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) confirms it will begin selling smartphones based on its Tizen OS this year. The phones will likely feature Intel (INTC) processors, given the chip giant's role in co-developing Tizen. Samsung is undoubtedly trying to lower its dependence on Android, but whether it succeeds depends on the willingness of consumers to embrace an OS that will initially have much less developer support. A Japanese paper previously reported NTT DoCoMo will sell Samsung's Tizen phones. 6 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, December 31, 2012, 10:17 AM Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is about to significantly expand its Silicon Valley ops: the electronics giant is building a 1.1M square foot sales and R&D center in San Jose, just a stone's throw away from Apple and Google, as well as opening other local facilities. Samsung has already made huge commitments for its Austin, TX facilities. Separately, the Daily Yomiuri reports Samsung will begin selling smartphones based on its Tizen OS (developed with Intel) to NTT DoCoMo (DCM) in 2013. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Friday, December 7, 2012, 11:24 AM Some Asian Apple (AAPL -1.8%) news: 1) The iPad Mini has launched to sparse crowds in China. The regular iPad controlled 71% of the Chinese tablet market in Q3, according to Analysys. 2) China Unicom (CHU) took over 200K iPhone 5 pre-orders in its first 2 days of availability. Unicom is fully subsidizing the phone to those who make a $947 deposit. 3) NTT DoCoMo (DCM) is facing more pressure to strike an iPhone deal (previous): the top Japanese carrier lost 40.8K subs in November to rivals SoftBank and KDDI. Apple's Japanese sales rose 113% Y/Y in FQ4. 7 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, November 19, 2012, 5:57 AM Nokia Siemens Networks (NOK, SI) and Ballard Power (BLDP) are developing mobile-infrastructure equipment that uses fuel cell technology to ensure that networks keep operating during power blackouts. The product has been received statutory approval in Japan, and been evaluated by NTT Docomo (DCM). (PR) Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 8:37 AM Spectra Energy (SE) agrees to acquire a one-third interest in the Sand Hills and Southern Hills pipelines now under construction by DCP Midstream (DCM). SE, Phillips 66 (PSX) and DCM each would own a one-third interest in the pipelines and will equally fund the remaining capital expenditures through completion. SE's total investment in the two projects is expected at $700M-$800M. Comment! [Energy, M&A]
- Friday, October 26, 2012, 12:49 PM Apple (AAPL -2.6%) is now seeing a decent post-earnings selloff. Aside from the margin issues, the Street is likely concerned about Apple's relatively soft European and Asia-Pac performance. Europe and China's macro problems are one reason, but in light of Samsung's Q3 smartphone sales and recent market share data (I, II), Android competition could be another. U.S. and Japanese sales grew much faster thanks to iPhone share gains - could the Japanese gains finally lead to a deal with NTT DoCoMo? (more) (transcript) 45 Comments [Tech, On the Move]
- Wednesday, October 24, 2012, 10:34 AM Amazon (AMZN) finally enters the Japanese e-reader and tablet markets: the company just opened a Japanese Kindle store featuring over 50K e-books, and says the Kindle Paperwhite, Fire, and Fire HD will be available at local retail chains. A deal with NTT DoCoMo (DCM) will allow 3G Paperwhite users to receive free mobile data services. Amazon, whose Japanese launch was held up by squabbles with publishers, is joining a crowded market. Comment! [Tech, Consumer]
- Tuesday, August 21, 2012, 11:02 AM Nokia (NOK) now has a 59% share of the global Windows Phone (MSFT) user base, per app analytics firm Localytics. This compares with 21% for HTC, and 13% for Android giant Samsung. However, IDC recently estimated WP only had a 3.5% share of global smartphone sales in Q2. comScore just pegged WP's share of the Japanese smartphone base at 3%, compared with 64% for Android (GOOG) and (impressively, given top carrier DCM still doesn't sell it) 32% for the iPhone (AAPL). 5 Comments [Tech]
- Wednesday, August 1, 2012, 12:55 PM NTT DoCoMo (DCM), Fujitsu, and NEC have formed a JV (majority-owned by Fujisu) that will develop 3G/4G baseband chips. The JV, which aims to reduce the companies' dependence on baseband leader Qualcomm (QCOM), comes 4 months after a partnership that also featured Samsung and Panasonic unraveled. Qualcomm and its giant R&D budget have weathered a few similar challenges in the past. Comment! [Tech]
- Friday, July 13, 2012, 6:45 PM Baidu (BIDU) is forming a Chinese mobile content distribution JV with NTT DoCoMo (DCM). DoCoMo is investing $22.5M to obtain a 20% stake in the JV, whose first offerings will be games and related services from Japanese developer DeNA. A JV between Baidu and Japan's Rakuten recently unraveled, and the company's international moves generally haven't gone well. But the DoCoMo tie-up does play into Baidu's efforts to build a strong mobile developer ecosystem. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 11:30 AM More from Jefferies on Apple: Misek also predicts Apple will sell 30M iPhones in the June quarter (more than some expect), and thinks production is steady at 28M-32M (if accurate, that's a positive for iPhone component suppliers). He also doubts Euro carriers will follow the lead of Telefonica's (TEF) Spanish unit in eliminating phone subsidies, given the share losses that resulted, and expects NTT DoCoMo (DCM) to eventually carry the iPhone, in spite of statements to the contrary. Comment!
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 9:07 AM Though China Mobile says it's in talks to carry the iPhone, Japan's NTT DoCoMo (DCM), which has over 60M subscribers, says it still has no plans to do so, citing an inability to offer some of its services on Apple's (AAPL) device. The WSJ previously claimed talks had stalled over Apple's purchase requirements, and DoCoMo's insistence on pre-installing certain apps. DoCoMo's remarks come as it introduces 19 new devices, nearly all of which run Android (GOOG). 4 Comments [Tech]
