DuPont (DD) is sending dozens of inspectors to make sure that farmers in Canada (and next year in the U.S.) aren't violating sales contracts by illegally saving the firm's Roundup Ready GM seeds for replanting in the following season. "Everyone always goes to the idea that we are trying to intimidate people and nothing could be further from the truth," says Dennis Birtles of enforcement company Agro Protection. "We are trying to create deterrence." But not by intimidation.

The DOJ has ended an antitrust investigation into the U.S. seed industry without filing charges. Justice had requested information from Monsanto (MON) about its business practices regarding to its Roundup Ready soybean, which is designed to withstand the application of the herbicide glyphosate. DuPont (DD) also received a demand for information but doesn't believe the probe was aimed at its behavior.

DuPont (DD -8.9%) follows its ugly Q3 earnings assessment with a declaration that its infrastructure projects in China had "stalled." CEO Ellen Kullman tells analysts during the post-earnings conference call she had visited China two weeks ago and noted demand had been hit by uncertainty over upcoming leadership changes, though economic stimulus efforts were starting to bear fruit.

The slide in DuPont (DD -9%) shares wipes away all their 2012 gains following the weak Q3 earnings report. But DD says it remains on track to achieve its full-year 2012 productivity targets for both fixed costs and working capital, and it is "taking the necessary steps" to move long-term into higher growth, higher margin businesses such as agriculture, nutrition and biotech. Also: DOW -3.1%, MON -1.8%.
