DuPont's (DD +4%) discussion of spinning off its performance chemicals unit would seem to vindicate Nelson Peltz, who is said to be "amassing a large stake" in the company, though CEO Ellen Kullman tells CNBC it has been "looking at alternatives... for a few months." BGC analyst Mark Gulley thinks Peltz might propose a split into two pieces, and the strategic review of performance paints is "certainly a step in the right direction."

More on DuPont (DD +2.7%) Q2: DuPont is looking to sell or spin off its performance-chemicals unit as part of a strategy to become a "higher growth, less cyclical" company, and as a way to insulate itself from stagnating sales of paint pigments. The business includes DuPont's Titanium Technologies and Chemicals & Fluoroproducts operations, which generated total sales of $7.2B in 2012. The company has also announced a management reshuffle. Deutsche's David Begleiter has some ideas about what Nelson Peltz may have planned for his purportedly "large stake" in DuPont (DD +0.2%). "We believe … Mr. Peltz could propose a breakup" of the company into two entities "comprising the Agriculture, Industrial BioSciences and Nutrition & Health segments and the other comprising the Electronic & Communications, Performance Chemicals, Performance Materials and Safety & Protection segments," Begleiter says, before noting that the more likely scenario is a divestiture of the TiO2 business.

As Congress considers scaling back U.S. rules that mandate the use of renewable fuels, it has the full support of the petroleum industry with one major exception: BP is part of the Butamax JV with DuPont (DD) set to start producing a new alternative fuel by year-end, so to preserve a market for that fuel, its reps are trying to convince D.C. lawmakers that the current system doesn’t need an overhaul.

DuPont (DD -0.7%) opens a seed plant in Ukraine designed to help farmers increase harvests with more productive seeds. Ukraine, a major maize exporter, plans to harvest a record 27M-28M metric tons of the commodity this year but still needs higher-quality seeds to increase yields. Monsanto (MON) said last month it planned to launch a non-GM corn seed plant in Ukraine in 2015.
