- Thursday, June 13, 8:43 AM More on May Retail Sales: As expected the late start to the spring season helped boost the building material & garden equipment category (HD, LOW, SHLD, WMT) as sales improved 0.9% M/M and 10.1% Y/Y. Grocery store sales (KR, SVU, SWY, WFM) were solid during the month, while department store sales (KSS, DDS, JCP, M, JWN) came in a touch light. Comment! [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Tuesday, June 4, 9:03 AM More on ICSC Retail Store Sales: The retail reading from Memorial Day week was solid as some pent-up demand was released. Department stores (M, JWN, KSS, JCP, SKS, DDS, SHLD, BONT, TJX) showed strength - while furniture sales (RH, HOFT, FBN, HVT, PIR, ETH, BSET) didn't quite keep up. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, May 29, 8:04 AM This week's ICSC-Goldman report on store sales highlighted strength at department stores (M, JWN, KSS, JCP, SKS, DDS, SHLD, BONT, TJX) during the Memorial Day weekend. It's a positive sign for the sector after the weather was widely blamed for the sluggish start to the spring selling season. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 24, 8:52 AM Dillards (DDS) declares $0.05/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 0.21%. For shareholders of record June 28. Payable August 5. Ex-div date June 26. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Wednesday, May 15, 5:30 PM More on Dillards (DDS): Q1 beats on EPS estimates but comes up slightly shy on sales. Per share earnings rose 27% Y/Y, boosted by better merchandise gross margins and lower operating expenses. Comp store sales inched up by 1%, with sales trends strongest in ladies' accessories and lingerie and juniors' and children's apparel. Sales were weakest in the home and furniture category. Shares +1.6% AH. Comment! [Earnings, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 15, 4:20 PM Dillard's (DDS): Q1 EPS of $2.40 beats by $0.31. Revenue of $1.55B misses by $0.06B. Shares +1.6% AH. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News, On the Move]
- Tuesday, May 7, 9:29 AM Retail sales numbers for April could be a tad weaker than expected after weekly reports from Redbook and ICSC-Goldman on chain store sales both came in a bit below expectations. Retail read-through: Weather and swings in gas prices seemed to impact store traffic to malls (KSS, DDS, JCP, LTD, GPS, ANF, AEO) and supercenters (WMT, COST TGT), but economists think consumer confidence on the high end (TIF, RL, SKS, COH, BBBY) just might be on the rise. Also, with online sales de-emphasized in the weekly chain store reports - Internet whiz kids Macy's (M) and Urban Outfitters (URBN) could still outperform even if mall parking lots aren't packed. 1 Comment [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Friday, April 12, 8:47 AM The March report on retail sales indicates a measurable impact was felt by retailers from the round of cooler weather seen in the U.S. during the month right along with broader macroeconomic factors. Department store (KSS, JWN, DDS, SKS, SHLD) and home garden (HD, LOW) sales tipped to the weaker side while online sales showed some strength. 3 Comments [Consumer, U.S. Economy]
- Tuesday, April 9, 10:31 AM Department store stocks (M, SKS, SHLD, KSS, DDS) are trading lower in the wake of the divorce of Ron Johnson from J.C. Penney and a report on retail chain store sales that leaned to the soft side. It's a move that some analysts see as slightly curious with the weather-related delay to the spring selling season only a temporary bump and with J.C. Penney seemingly a punch or two away from a knockout that could bleed some sales to peers. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Friday, April 5, 9:29 AM Moody's takes Dillard's (DDS) credit rating up one notch to Ba2, just two levels below investment grade. Inventory management and merchandising improvements were cited in the decision. Fitch took DDS into investment grade last month, and S&P has the company one notch below investment grade. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, March 15, 2:53 PM Consumer wrapup: An improved jobs situation and a break upward in the value of houses seems to be trumping higher payroll taxes as consumers continue to spend more than some of the more dire forecasts for the first half of 2012 foreshadowed. By sector, Staples (XLP), Discretionary (XLY), and Retail (XRT) are all double-digit gainers for the year, while defensive-oriented plays (PG, CLX, CL, REV, GIS) have been busy tracking higher. A couple of retail powerhouses - Wal-Mart (WMT) and TJX Companies (TJX) - haven't joined the 2013 frivolity just yet and the department store group (M, SKS, DDS, JWN, KSS, JCP) has lagged. Comment! [Consumer, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, March 13, 8:44 AM More on Retail Sales: Two months into the year and retail categories look reasonably strong compared to estimates with the exception of electronics (BBY, RSH, CONN) and department stores (JWN, M, DDS, SHLD, KSS) which are running below last year's pace of sales. Improved results in the automobile and sporting goods categories (guns) were no surprise, but building material & garden (HD, LOW) looks slightly better than anticipated, according to analysts. Comment! [U.S. Economy, Consumer]

Tuesday, March 12, 5:20 PM
Dillard’s (DDS) revised record date for quarterly cash dividend to Mar. 28 from previously announced Mar. 29. The ex-dividend date changes to Mar. 26. (PR)
Comment! [Dividends] - Tuesday, March 5, 8:29 AM Retail winners today include Ascena Retail Group (ASNA) and American Apparel (APP), both up double-digits after reporting solid earnings. Both companies blasted past the estimates of analysts as sales were boosted by a strong online business. It continues a trend of smaller retail chains chipping away at department stores online, highlighted dramatically by J.C. Penney's (JCP) online meltdown (-34.4% Q4, -37% Q3) and to a much lesser extent by growth rates at Dillard's (DDS), Kohl's (KSS), Sears (SHLD), Saks (SKS), and Nordstrom (JWN). 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Thursday, February 28, 7:11 PM Dillard’s (DDS) declares $0.05/share quarterly dividend, in line with previous. Forward yield 0.25%. For shareholders of record Mar. 29. Payable May 06. Ex-div date Mar. 27. (PR) Comment! [Dividends]
- Thursday, February 28, 8:54 AM Department store shakeup: With another round of quarterly reports in it's clear Kohl's (KSS) was unable to pick up as many disgruntled J.C. Penney shoppers as Macy's (M), Dillard's (DDS) or even to a smaller extent Sears (SHLD) and the dollar store group (DG, DLTR, FDO). Analysts aren't going easy on the retailer, calling execution by Kohl's management part of the problem. Comment! [Consumer]
