- Friday, May 18, 2012, 6:52 PM As Microsoft (MSFT) and PC OEMs hope the fall release of Windows 8 systems featuring ARM-based (ARMH) processors will give their PC/tablet sales a lift, the OEMs are reportedly struggling to reach tablet price points they consider necessary to compete with the iPad (AAPL) and Kindle Fire (AMZN), due to Microsoft's insistence on a $90-$100 Windows license fee. Concerns also exist about the software compatibility issues facing ARM-based hardware. 20 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 3:52 PM According to a Morgan Stanley chart, H-P's (HPQ +0.2%) annual operating profit/employee stands at just $35K. That puts it behind most of its enterprise hardware peers, including top rivals IBM ($49K), DELL ($48K), and EMC ($67K), and goes a long way towards explaining the company's reported plans to cut 25K jobs. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, May 17, 2012, 12:58 PM Sterne Agee's Shaw Wu, who downgraded Dell (DELL -0.2%) in February following its FQ4 miss, is upgrading the company to Neutral ahead of Tuesday's FQ1 report. A low valuation (5x estimated calendar 2013 EPS ex-cash) is the main reason for the upgrade, though Wu is still worried about Dell's lack of growth, as well as its heavy PC exposure (70%-75% of sales) amidst tough competition (Apple on the high-end, Asian vendors on the low-end). Comment! [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Friday, May 11, 2012, 11:08 AM Fusion-io (FIO +7.2%) surges on a rumor it turned down a $33/share offer from DELL. A Dell spokesperson refuses comment. Comment! [Tech, M&A, On the Move]
- Wednesday, May 9, 2012, 9:12 AM Screenshots emerge of a smartphone that will reportedly be sold by Baidu (BIDU) for 1,000 RMB ($159) or less. Baidu has already developed an Android-based mobile OS, though it's only used right now on a high-end Dell (DELL) device that has seen limited sales. The company's mobile efforts are fueled by an interest in boosting its Chinese mobile search share from a current 35%. Comment! [Tech]
- Thursday, May 3, 2012, 10:15 AM Though Q1 PC sales were better than expected and positive supply-chain data has emerged in recent weeks, Digitimes reports retailers have become conservative about their Q2 outlooks, out of concern consumers will hold off on purchases until Windows 8 (MSFT) arrives. Nonetheless, they expect demand to eventually pick up thanks to Windows 8 and the release of cheaper Intel (INTC) Ivy Bridge CPUs. Comment! [Tech]
- Wednesday, May 2, 2012, 6:52 PM Unhappy with weak demand for high-end Android tablets, PC OEMs such as Dell (DELL), H-P (HPQ), and Acer are focusing their R&D resources on developing Windows 8 (MSFT) products, reports Digitimes. The same goes for leading contract manufacturer Compal. The first ARM-based (ARMH) tablets running Windows 8, which has received good early reviews, are due in October. 8 Comments [Tech]
- Monday, April 30, 2012, 2:44 PM Dell (DELL) says its $999 XPS 13 ultrabook, launched to reviews that praised its looks but criticized its display, is receiving nearly "3x the expected demand," with interest coming from both enterprises and consumers. Intel (INTC) has to be pleased a pre-Ivy Bridge ultrabook is faring this well, given its huge investment. NAND flash memory vendors SNDK and MU also benefit from ultrabook adoption. 4 Comments [Tech]
- Thursday, April 19, 2012, 1:51 PM Microsoft (MSFT +0.2%), up 17% YTD, is treading water ahead of today's FQ3 report. Windows and Office sales will be closely by investors in PC-related names, given the mixed signals (I, II) provided lately about demand. Wells Fargo and Citi think better-than-expected PC sales will produce earnings upside, but the latter worries about negative Windows 8 datapoints emerging. Server & Tools is likely to be an area of strength. Comment! [Tech, Earnings, Quick Ideas]
- Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 9:50 AM Microsoft (MSFT) discloses Windows 8 will come in 3 editions: Windows 8 (consumer-oriented), Windows 8 Pro (meant for business users and enthusiasts), and Windows RT (meant for systems running ARM-based CPUs). Windows 7, by contrast, is available in 6 editions. Early feedback on Windows 8, due this fall, has largely been positive; PC makers are hoping it will finally let them sell legit rivals to the iPad. 1 Comment [Tech]
- Thursday, April 12, 2012, 10:49 AM Though Nomura isn't thrilled with Gartner's Q1 PC data (I, II), it, along with similar data from IDC, is stoking a major rally in H-P (HPQ +6.2%). Gartner estimates H-P's share rose 30 bps Y/Y and 120 bps Q/Q, reversing the declines seen due to last year's drama. Dell (DELL +0.1%), which is believed to have lost share, and just received bearish comments from Jim Chanos, is undeperforming. Comment! [Tech, On the Move]
- Thursday, April 12, 2012, 9:32 AM More from Jim Chanos: The contrarian fund manager also says he's short Coinstar (CSTR -2.4%) and Dell (DELL -0.2%) on account of technology trends. Chanos expects the adoption of streaming video to gradually eat into Coinstar's DVD rental sales, and he predicts tablet proliferation will do a number on Dell's PC business. (video) 5 Comments [Tech, Quick Ideas]
- Wednesday, April 11, 2012, 5:51 PM More on Gartner's PC data: The numbers back up recent positive datapoints (I, II) about PC demand. U.S. shipments fell 3.5% Y/Y, but beat Gartner's forecast for a 6.1% drop. Impressively (given Europe's woes), EMEA sales rose 6.7% on the back of strong business orders. Dell's (DELL) global share fell 40 bps Y/Y and 160 bps Q/Q. Apple's (AAPL) U.S. share was 10.6%, up 80 bps Y/Y but down 100 bps Q/Q (likely affected by seasonality). (PR) 4 Comments [Tech]
