Goldman Sachs (GS) has possibly generated $1.2B in revenue over the past six years from its involvement with Dollar General (DG), Reuters guesstimates. Goldman, which took part in Dollar General's leveraged buyout in 2007, has earned money from the sale of the retailer's stock after its IPO in 2009, as well as from management fees, interest payments and other charges.
1 Comment [Financials, Consumer] - Monday, April 8, 9:05 AM Dollar General (DG) announces $1.3B offering of 5- and 10-year senior notes as well as a new senior unsecured credit facility comprised of a $1B five-year term loan and an $850M five-year revolver. Proceeds will go towards repayment of an existing senior secured credit facility with any remainder allocated to general corporate purposes. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 3, 10:55 AM The dollar store group (DLTR, DG, FDO) outperforms broad market averages after Dollar Tree lands an upgrade to Outperform from Morgan Stanley. A survey by the investment firm showed the payroll tax hike isn't impacting consumer shopping decisions. What to watch: Dollar stores aren't seeing the same pressure as Wal-Mart as in-store pricing and promotions have helped to protect margins, but will the retailing giant's move to a smaller-store format turn the tables? Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 27, 7:16 AM Dollar General (DG) announces a 30M secondary offering of shares by certain existing shareholders. DG -0.6% premarket. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 26, 2:28 PM MKM ups price target on teen-focused retailer Five Below (FIVE -5.1%) to $36 from $32 citing valuation. Cramer says the absence of margin compression in Dollar General's (DG) latest report bodes well for Five, which reports tomorrow. Nonetheless, the shares are lagging today. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, March 25, 12:31 PM Hedgeye dissects Dollar General's (DG +0.1%) earnings report (I, II), noting the retailer's solid sales growth and margin improvement but also identifying a trend that could hold down share price. As a higher percentage of the company's total sales drift into food and other perishables, the pace of margin improvement could slow down. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, March 25, 8:36 AM Family Dollar (FDO) and Dollar Tree (DLTR) are on watch after discounter peer Dollar General beats estimates with its Q4 report. Today's report from Dollar General (DG) is another indication that the dollar store group is successfully taking market share away from grocery store chains in food and basics. What to watch: A plan by Wal-Mart to ramp up small-format stores (Express & Neighborhood Market) could be the next hurdle the sector needs to clear. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, March 25, 7:30 AM More on Dollar General (DG): The company's board approves an additional $500M share repurchase program. A ratio of adjusted debt to adjusted EBITDA of at or below 3.0 to 1 is set as a target. DG +0.4% premarket. (Previous: earnings, details) Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, March 25, 7:19 AM More on Dollar General (DG): Same-store sales increased 3% Y/Y with both customer traffic and average transaction amount improving moderately. SG&A expenses were $845M, up 10 bp from last year's period, despite lower retail labor expenses. The retailer forecasts 2013 sales will grow 10% to 12% and EPS will fall in a range of $3.15-$3.30. DG -1.5% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Monday, March 25, 7:06 AM Dollar General (DG): Q4 EPS of $0.97. Revenue of $4.21B (+0.5% Y/Y) misses by $0.05B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Wednesday, March 20, 10:57 AM A number of discounter stocks are catching a tailwind today as investors seem to be shifting their attitudes toward the outlook for discretionary spending or shifting from topped-out sectors. Advancers include the dollar store group - Family Dollar Stores (FDO +2.9%), Dollar General (DG +2.5%), and Dollar Tree (DLTR +2.9%) - while Five Below (FIVE +1.3%) and Fred's (FRED +2%) are also outperforming. Even retail giants Target (TGT +1.5%) and Wal-Mart (WMT +0.7%) aren't getting left behind. Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Wednesday, March 13, 9:54 AM Dollar stores (DG, DLTR, FDO) are sitting in the sweet spot for retail, according to analyst Kristin Bentz. Though the stores were once a destination for shopping "treasure hunts," a trend of consumers using the outlets as de facto grocery stores for basics and consumables is firming up. Wal-Mart (WMT +0.5%) may get a piece of the action with a plan to increase its footprint of small-format stores, while grocery stores could suffer a loss of market share (KR, SWY, SVU). (full report .pdf) 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, March 4, 3:34 PM Retail rush: Target (TGT +3.5%) trades higher as some investors take the bet that lower oil prices might put enough cash back into the pockets of consumers to spur on spending. Also on the move: Wal-Mart (WMT +2%), Costco (COST +1.7%), and Dollar General (DG +2.1%). 2 Comments [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, March 4, 8:38 AM Guggenheim Securities' John Heinbockel thinks the dollar store group (DG, DLTR, FDO) still presents a defensive investment option with only 20% to 25% of sales falling under the discretionary spending label. On concerns of saturation, the analyst thinks more growth for the sector is still possible. Comment! [Consumer]
