- Tuesday, April 30, 11:08 AM Hulu (DIS, NWS, CMCSA) discloses at a media conference that it has doubled the number of paying subscribers to its Hulu Plus service to over four million in the last year. The media venture continues to stay relevant by resurrecting canceled shows (All My Children, One Life to Live), planning original content, and licensing popular shows. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Monday, April 29, 1:48 PM Barry Diller had some intriguing comments on upstart Aereo during a Bloomberg TV interview: 1) If the legal battles go Aereo's way, Diller sees a radical revolution where consumers have one wire into their house. Think cord-cutting on steroids - potentially good for Netflix (NFLX -0.1%) but clearly bad for broadcasters (CBS, CMCSA, DIS, AMCX). 2) Aereo could be profitable at 10M-20M subscribers. 3) What about media heavyweights such as News Corp (NWS, NWSA) threatening the nuclear option of going to cable? Diller thinks it's a grab for fees that won't play well for consumers. (video) 10 Comments [Consumer, Tech]
- Monday, April 29, 10:23 AM UBS ups it ratings on Disney (DIS +2%) to Buy from Neutral on its view it's still early in the game for the company' acquisition-based (Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm) earnings growth cycle. The firm missed out on Disney's +26% YTD run - but thinks investors should still jump on board. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 25, 2:31 PM Disney (DIS -0.1%) settles its dispute with exhibitor AMC Entertainment in a deal which will allow advance tickets for next week's debut of Iron Man 3 to be sold at AMC theaters. Cinemark Holdings (CNK +0.6%) and Regal Entertainment (RGC +0.9%) are reported to close to finalizing a deal with Disney. The issue cropped up when Disney tried to flex its muscles and grab a higher share of the box office for its films with an eye on a long string of Star Wars movies slated for the future. Which side blinked first hasn't been disclosed yet. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 25, 1:16 PM Time Warner Cable (TWC -0.2%) CEO Glenn Britt delivered a sobering thought for media concerns during the company's earnings call (transcript). The exec says if Aereo becomes legal it would have a "significant impact" on the future of transmission fees. The quick uptake is that the development would be good for cable/satellite players (CVC, DTV, CHTR, DISH), but bad for broadcasters (DIS, CBS, CMCSA, AMCX, NWS) (h/t Rich Greenfield BTIG) 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 25, 10:43 AM China increasingly becomes part of the matrix when evaluating future growth opportunities for Disney (DIS). Although the opening is over two years away, reports from Chinese media outlets indicate the buzz is already growing for the opening of Shanghai Disneyland. The most important new development is that the municipal government approved an extension of a rail line to Xujahui which puts millions more Chinese consumers within a subway ride of the amusement park. (Previous: China greenlights Iron Man 3) 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 25, 7:37 AM A group of theater chains including AMC Entertainment, Cinemark Holdings (CNK), and Regal Entertainment (RGC) are taking a hard line in negotiations with Disney (DIS) over how ticket revenue is shared by not offering advance ticket sales for Iron Man 3 and curtailing promotions for the movie. The chains claim Disney wants up to 65% of the box office take - instead of the typical 50% to 55% cut. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 25, 7:06 AM Disney (DIS) has permission to open Iron Man 3 in China on May 3 with expectations high the film will do well in the nation. In order to hedge its bet, Disney created a second version of the movie just for China with extra Chinese actors and footage from the region. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 24, 10:05 AM The buzz from Madison Avenue is that upfront pricing for TV ads will show their slowest gain since the economic downturn this year. Last year, broadcasters ABC (DIS), CBS (CBS), NBC (CMCSA) and Fox (NWS, NWSA) were able to realize ad rate increases of 5% to 9% - but a ratings slump and the emergence of online video alternatives is taking a bigger bite from demand in 2013. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, April 22, 12:53 PM The local operator of Tokyo Disney Resort is set to post record profits of $804M for the fiscal year ending March 31. Though Disney (DIS +0.1%) doesn't own a stake in the venture, it generates a healthy amount of licensing fees off the theme park. What to watch: The popularity of the company's franchise characters in Asia are increasingly important with Shanghai Disney slated to open in 2015 to high expectations. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 18, 2:08 PM Highlights from CinemaCon: 1) The debate over shortening theater release windows picks up with the displeasure of move theater operators (CNK, CKEC, IMAX, RGC, MCS, RDI) over the practice losing steam as the appeal of boosting VOD revenue entices studios. 2) Disney's (DIS) presentation was a hit with screening of both Monsters University and The Lone Ranger being well-received on top of the company's dramatic Star Wars news . 3) What's next for theaters? The success of both IMAX in international markets and new premium theaters popping up in the U.S. has operators exploring upgrades to theater complexes to add features such as bars, lounges, and restaurants. Naturally, ticket prices would be boosted to pay for it all. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 18, 11:16 AM Rentrak reports cable subscribers spend 40% more time watching free VOD content than they did a year ago. The development has big implications on ad dollars with media companies (CBS, CMCSA, NWS, NWSA, DIS) battling with advertisers on how to count viewers. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, April 18, 8:11 AM Disney (DIS) CEO Alan Horn promised the audience at CinemaCon yesterday that the company will deliver Star Wars films in 2015, 2017, and 2019 with spinoff movies derived from the franchise set for 2016 and 2018. While good news for Star Wars fans, investors may also be rejoicing if the company can successfully integrate Star Wars themes into its other segments to drive revenue gains. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 17, 3:36 PM Aereo took out a full page ad in The New York Times to pitch its case to the public that its large media companies are ganging up on it. Fox (NWS, NWSA), NBC (CMCSA -2%), ABC (DIS -0.3%), and CBS (CBS -1.6%) are united in their stance that the startup's retransmission of content violates copyright law, but an initial court ruling has gone against them. (Previous: Broadcasters consider the nuclear option) Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 17, 11:12 AM Movie studios (DIS, TWX, CMCSA, LGF, VIA, VIAB, SNE) might be asleep at the switch, according data compiled from an industry trade group. While movies rated PG-13 almost doubled the return of R-rated movies in 2012, studios released twice as many of the R-rated variety. If box office numbers for Q1 are any indicator, execs haven't learned the lesson yet. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 17, 7:32 AM Disney (DIS) will launch a free TV channel in Germany starting next January. The new channel will feature programming from U.S-based Disney Channel and be stocked with films from the company's library. The big picture: Disney's entry into a crowded German TV market could be motivated by an effort to improve sluggish sales of Disney-branded products in the nation. Comment! [Consumer]

The Complete Dividend Plan: $HTA only one red in the portfolio today. That means we want to add more. Stocks getting way ahead on low volume. Not what U want to see -
Minutemen: INTC trading at very heavy volume. Lots of + catalysts for that one. I like HTA and may add more on a broader down turn.
