- Monday, March 25, 6:51 AM Box office review: The film industry is falling further behind last year's haul with the weekend box for the top dozen films taking in 35% less than last year's comparable weekend. Star performers in an otherwise dull weekend included The Croods with an estimated $44.7M take for DreamWorks Animation (DWA) and Olympus Has Fallen with an opening weekend of $30.5M which beat expectations. The showing for Oz The Great and Powerful from Disney (DIS) was solid again with a $22M third-week tally. Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, March 22, 11:35 AM More Disney (DIS +1.1%) magic: One of studio chief Alan Horn's first moves after taking over last year was to pour an extra $15M into Oz The Great and Powerful, a gambit that appears to be paying off with the first two weeks of global box office receipts strong for the movie. Emboldened by early success, Horn now plans to push ahead with plans to release more live action movies such as Tomorrowland and a new Pirates of the Caribbean - two titles that seem vaguely familiar to theme park visitors. Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 21, 12:56 PM The combined box office from BRIC nations could double to $12.1B by the end of 2017, according to new industry research. Growth in China, Russia, Brazil, and India is being led by higher ticket prices and a rapid pace of screen construction. Though it's good news for Hollywood studios (TWX, DIS, LGF, VIAB, CMCSA, SNE) looking for global growth opportunities, IMAX (IMAX -0.9%) is the company that could see the biggest benefit if the rosy forecast pans out. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, March 20, 8:39 AM Disney (DIS) says it will distribute an upcoming 3D movie from director Toni Myers jointly with IMAX (IMAX). The partnership will mark the first time the two companies produced an IMAX movie together. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 19, 11:00 AM Disney (DIS -0.8%) is reported to be working on an app that will allow paying cable/satellite users to stream shows from ABC live to mobile devices. The development could be the next leap forward for "TV Everywhere" as none of the other major broadcasting networks offer the service at the moment. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, March 18, 10:41 AM Verizon (VZ) has joined Cablevision in wanting a shakeup of the pay-TV industry's structure: Big Red says it's talking with several "midtier and smaller" TV network owners about paying for channels based on how many subscribers watch, rather than the number of covered homes. Verizon's efforts, which it says would allow it to offer a bigger lineup of niche channels, aren't as dramatic as Cablevision's attempts to end to channel bundling. But they still underscore industry discontent with having to pay per-user fees for less popular channels from media giants such as Viacom (VIA) and Disney (DIS), regardless of viewing activity. 3 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Monday, March 18, 6:24 AM Disney's (DIS) Oz The Great and Powerful put in a solid second weekend at the box office. The film took in $42.2M to bring its ten-day haul to $145M. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Saturday, March 16, 11:45 AM The increased focus of media companies to license film and television content to sites such as Amazon and Netflix is irresistible due to the lush margins for streaming video on demand, but the trend also poses a long-term threat to the traditional TV advertising model as new generations of audiences become accustomed to SVOD viewing habits. What to watch: Content companies need to maximize profits without cannibalizing TV ratings for hit shows. Look for more quick SVOD profit hits from CBS (CBS), Discovery Communications (DISCA), Time Warner (TWX), and Viacom (VIA, VIAB) while News Corp. (NWS, NWSA) and Disney (DIS) may have broader streaming plans in mind. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Friday, March 15, 7:34 PM If history is a guide, the markets may be due for a pullback, according to S&P Capital's Sam Stovall. Since World War II, Stovall says the median advance once the S&P hits its previous high after recovering from a bear market has been just 3%. But despite the ominous warning, there still may be some places to ride it all out. JPMorgan's chief U.S. equities strategist Tom Lee recently came up with 15 stocks that outperformed the S&P 500 in eight of the last 11 pullbacks since 2009: CAG, IBM, DIS, GPC, MMM, FISV, PAYX, PPG, SYY, SIAL, UNP, UTX, PX, L, and XRAY. 42 Comments [U.S. Economy]
- Friday, March 15, 11:19 AM J.P. Morgan's Thomas Lee sees two distinctive style attributes that will help stocks outperform after the recent run-up: high free cash flow yields and - surprisingly - low dividend yields. Lee's screen produces 15 stocks investors can buy now: CAG, IBM, GPC, MMM, PAYX, UTX, SYY, PPG, PX, UNP, FISV, SIAL, XRAY, L, DIS. 6 Comments [Quick Ideas]
- Thursday, March 14, 6:58 PM Outgoing Hulu (DIS, NWS, CMCSA) CEO Jason Kilar says content chief Andy Forssell will be the streaming service's acting CEO following his departure. Kilar also confirms Disney and News Corp. are "currently finalizing their forward-looking plans with Hulu" (previous) - a "permanent decision" about Hulu's CEO will be made after said finalization. Forssell will take over a company whose 2012 sales were less than 1/5 of Netflix's, and whose paid subscriber base is less than 1/9 as large. Comment! [Consumer, Tech]
- Thursday, March 14, 2:45 PM Crowdsourcing goes Hollywood: Writer-director Rob Thomas successfully raises $2.7M and counting in a Kickstarter campaign that just launched yesterday after his movie was stalled by execs at Warner Bros TWX. Due to the successful grassroots-level raise of funds, the movie Veronica Mars will move to pre-production and be shot over the summer - by insider accounts a first for the industry. The read-through could be interesting for studios (LGF, DIS, VIA, CMCSA, SNE) as they test new ways to gauge market reaction before making large investments into projects. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 14, 1:48 PM Disney (DIS +0.3%) plans to start live arena shows featuring Marvel superheroes in a similar vein as the Disney on Ice and Disney Live shows which have circled the globe to great success. If all goes according to plan, it shouldn't be too much longer before Han Solo and Chewbecca get their cameos as well. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, March 14, 6:47 AM Disney (DIS) says its Disney Infinity video game won't be released until August 18, about two months behind the original launch date. The company says the debut of the highly-anticipated game is being delayed to "capitalize" on the fall retail season. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, March 13, 6:55 AM Disney (DIS) CEO Bob Iger indicates a theme park in Shanghai may be just a start for a new round of international expansion. He says growth markets like Russia, India, and Brazil provide excellent opportunities for the company to build parks. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 12, 2:40 PM Crunching the Disney-Star Wars numbers: Disney's (DIS -1.6%) purchase of Lucasfilm wasn't cheap, but it could also pay for itself quicker than early estimates. The last three Star Wars movies brought home $2.5B - a mark which seems easily attainable by the upcoming three with higher ticket prices, IMAX, 3-D, and the Disney marketing machine all working in the favor of a revenue bonanza. Also in the mix: 1) Stand-alone Star Wars movies. 2) Live-action TV series. 3) Gaming revenue opportunities. 4) New initiatives tied to Star Wars branching out to Disney theme parks and merchandising. 2 Comments [Consumer]
