- Monday, June 17, 2:39 PM Out with the old. The Netflix-DreamWorks Animation deal signals an important change in the way content is distributed, according to industry watchers The most important part of the deal is that it focus on exclusive fresh content for Netflix (NFLX +6.8%) from DreamWorks (DWA +4%) - instead of just filling up a library with older titles. The big picture: A bidding war for new films from Hollywood studios (LGF, SNE, VIA, CMCSA, DIS) could help the industry maximize profits. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg called it (I, II) last week when they predicted giant upheaval for the film industry. 5 Comments [Consumer]
- Friday, June 14, 4:47 AM Intel (INTC) is reportedly encountering difficulty in signing up programming deals for its upcoming online TV service, with major media companies such as Disney (DIS), Time Warner (TWX), Viacom (VIA), News Corp (NWS) and Comcast (CMCSA) yet to sign on. Pressure from cable TV providers such as Time Warner (TWC) is one reason, as is a fear of damaging the current lucrative ecosystem that the content and service providers enjoy. 21 Comments [Tech, Consumer]
- Thursday, June 13, 3:39 PM The glass half full: George Lucas and Steven Spielberg weren't sounding the death knell for the movie industry when they warned of an implosion but a paradigm shift away from multiplex theaters (CKEC, CNK, IMAX, RGC). When the day comes when mega-budget films from top studios (CMCSA, DIS, TWX, LGF, SNE, DWA) bomb at the box office, look for new mediums at home to emerge as first-run options. "There has never been more exciting potential," notes Spielberg. (video) 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Thursday, June 13, 12:02 PM A deal which will see DirecTV (DTV +0.1%) purchase Hulu (CMCSA, DIS, NWS) by the end of the month is imminent, sources tell PandoDaily. The acquisition would fill a large void in DirecTV's offerings which would be difficult to build from ground up and also allow it to play some defense against Hulu falling into a rival's hands. 3 Comments [Consumer, M&A]
- Wednesday, June 12, 11:38 AM Disney (DIS +0.3%) will shut down ESPN's 3D sports channel by the end of the year due to low consumer demand, according to a company spokesperson. The move fits into an overall corporate theme of finding ways to cut costs and doing a little downsizing in unprofitable areas. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Wednesday, June 12, 6:51 AM Revenue at theme parks (SIX, FUN, SEAS) in the U.S. is forecast to rise 2.8% Y/Y to $13.4B this year, but 2014 could be even better. Disney (DIS) raised ticket prices at Disneyland by almost 10%, a price hike which may slowly filter its way across the sector. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 11, 7:28 AM Analysts think Disney (DIS) is pushing all the right buttons with its Infinity gaming platform after the company failed to make a big splash in the industry in the past. By narrowing its focus on the gaming market of 6- to 12-year olds, Disney can take advantage of its franchises and neatly tie-in games to other business segments. (Previous: Disney at E3) Comment! - Tuesday, June 11, 6:10 AM The original "Superman" movie in the late 1970s may have pioneered the superhero blockbuster, but films based on Marvel (DIS) characters have grossed 47% more on average than those from DC Comics. In total, Marvel films have brought in $5.3B domestically since 1998 vs $3B for DC going back to 1978. DC owner Time Warner (TWX) is no doubt hoping that the "Man of Steel" Superman flick, which is due to be released this week, will help balance things out. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, June 10, 3:28 PM Disney (DIS -1.5%) is making a nice splash of its own at the E3 confab with demos of Disney Infinity which incorporate Disney and Pixar characters into the unique gaming/figurine system. Though there hasn't been any official announcement of future play sets covering the Star Wars or Marvel franchise, the inclusion of the Lone Ranger indicates almost any Disney property is fair game. - Friday, June 7, 8:37 AM Disney (DIS) CEO Bob Iger delivered a fascinating speech in China yesterday in which the exec brought home the point that bringing entertainment to Chinese audiences is an art form - not a science. He says the company is treading carefully with Shanghai Disney and adaptions of popular U.S. films and TV series. The hasty approach by some peers in China - including Sony's Django Unchained disaster - indicates the conservative approach by Disney might pay off in the long term. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, June 6, 11:13 AM AT&T (T) has reportedly joined the ranks of companies weighing bids for Hulu (DIS, CMCSA, NWS): sources tell Kara Swisher Ma Bell is in talks with a company run by former News Corp. COO Peter Chermin to make a joint offer for the online video site. But before investors start mulling the potential U-verse and mobile implications, it should be noted Yahoo, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, and Guggenheim Partners have also been named as interested parties in recent weeks. - Tuesday, June 4, 8:04 AM Amusement park operator stocks are on watch after Disney (DIS) raises its fees at key theme parks. Analysts see Six Flags (SIX), Cedar Fair (FUN), and SeaWorld (SEAS) potentially receiving a benefit from the higher ticket prices from the House of Mouse. 2 Comments [Consumer]
- Monday, June 3, 3:01 PM Disney (DIS +0.7%) has raised admission prices at its California and Florida theme parks by as much as 9.6%. Single-day, multi-day, and annual passes are all affected. A one-day pass to the Magic Kingdom in Orland is now $95 from $89 for those 10 and older. For one of two parks at Anaheim's Disneyland, it's now $92 from $87. A park hopper ticket allowing entry to both parks is 9.6% higher to $137. 4 Comments [Consumer]
- Sunday, June 2, 2:53 AM Satellite operator DirecTV (DTV) and two other unidentified suitors have reportedly bid over $1B each to acquire Hulu. The owners of the online video service, which are News Corp (NWS), Disney (DIS) and Comcast (CMCSA), have received seven offers for the company, and intend to cut the shortlist down over the next few weeks. Previous reports have said that other bidders include Yahoo (YHOO), KKR (KKR) and Time Warner Cable (TWC). 5 Comments [Consumer, M&A, Top Stories]
- Friday, May 31, 7:26 AM Goldman Sachs thinks the market over-reacted yesterday to a slight FQ3 guide down from Disney (DIS) as it backs a Conviction List Buy rating and $70 price target on the company. DIS -0.2% premarket. 1 Comment [Consumer]
- Thursday, May 30, 1:20 PM Heard during Disney's (DIS -0.4%) chat at the Nomura media conference: 1) CFO Jay Rasulo says the long-term opportunity in Shanghai is large enough for the theme park to eventually be its 2nd largest. The exec indicates smooth dealings with the Chinese government and notes the company learned its lesson after over-estimating capacity in France. 2) On Marvel, Disney thinks the untapped intellectual property of the asset is still being unfurled after The Avengers set the stage. Successful theme park and consumer product integration of Marvel bodes well for the returns from the Lucasfilm acquisition via the Star Wars franchise. 3) Licensing Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney properties together is proving successful. 4) Don't forget about TV. The Disney Channel is the top children's network and carries quite a bit of clout in negotiating carriage and licensing deals. (webcast) 2 Comments
