From our Interactive Earnings Report Database, below we have filtered out the US stocks that have historically been the most volatile on their earnings report days. To calculate this, we use the average absolute percentage change on all earnings report days for each stock that has reported earnings going back to 2001. (If a stock is up 10% on one day and down 20% on the next day, the average absolute 1-day change is 15%.)

The stocks below all have at least 10 quarterly earnings reports in our database and are trading higher than $5/share. As shown, FSLR has historically been the most volatile stock on earnings with an average daily change of +/-17.71%! in our database. MFLX isn't far behind at +/-17.03%. A stock that gains or loses nearly 20% of its value on every quarterly report is a day trader's dream. Other notables on the list of the most volatile stocks on earnings include ISRG, PCLN, UAUA, NFLX, and SNDK. For those interested, we also provide each stock's expected upcoming earnings report date.

However, if you look at the official screens regularly, it becomes apparent that often several stocks within an individual industry sector will all appear around the same time. This indicates that the sector, not necessarily the individual stocks, is out of favor with investors.

This is important for two reasons. First, buying into sectors out-of-favor is a good contrarian strategy for value investors. The market is one of cycles, and when one industry sector is up, others are down... but you can be sure they will reverse places in time. For example, oil and gas stocks were all the rage just a year ago as crude prices soared, but today sell for 40% or more less than they did at this point in 2008.

Most Volatile Stocks on Earnings

With earnings season now underway, below we highlight the stocks that typically have the biggest one-day price reactions following their earnings reports. We filtered the Russell 3,000 for stocks trading above $5/share that have had at least four quarterly earnings reports since the bear market began in October 2007. We then calculated the average absolute one-day percentage change on the first trading day following each company's earnings reports. (So a move of +20% on one day and a move of -10% on another day would result in an average absolute percentage change of 15%.)

In the table below, we provide the 30 most volatile stocks on earnings reports during the bear market. For each stock, we provide its current price, year to date change, average absolute one-day change on earnings reports, and the percentage of the time it has been up on its report days. The last category shows whether it has tended to be volatile on the upside or the downside. As shown, VDSI has been the most volatile name, with an average change of +/-28.88% on its report days. UAUA ranks second, followed by DFT, VPRT, DIVX, and CTRN. Other notables on the list include First Solar (FSLR), Overstock.com (OSTK), Priceline.com (PCLN), and Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD).

By searching for companies with negative enterprise values, the screen would also ensure that the companies have manageable debt as well as be a business that is non-capital intensive e.g. airlines and oil industry. Add in a couple of extra criteria such as an enterprise value/revenue < than 1 and a ROE of > 0 to try and filter out unduly cheap companies.

You can run the screen yourself at Yahoo.

With 98% of the world’s computers already using flash, this may not seem like a big deal, but when you consider that 0% of the world’s televisions supports flash, this really is groundbreaking.

Along with the update, DivX also released several plugins for their Connected device. These plugins add support for Vimeo, Daily Motion, YouTube and for the first time ever, Hulu all on your TV set. After playing around with the update, I created a video of the software in action. In the clip, I detail the basic features of DivX Connected and give you the very first look at Hulu Connected in action.

In the past, Matroska fans have had to go through a painful and complicated process in order to get their MKV files to play nice with their DivX hardware devices, but with the 7.0 release, it should be as easy as hitting play on DivX 7.0 gadgets.

done an impressive job of building an eco-system around a single file
format.

The first time that I came across a DivX file, I actually
thought that it was some kind of a virus. It took me two weeks before I
worked up the courage to download the DivX media player so that I could
play the movie, but once I did, I realized that my fears were
unfounded. The file not only offered a superior video experience, but
it was a lot smaller than the MPEG files that I was used to
downloading. Since I was on a dial-up connection at the time, every
little byte made a big difference.
