- Tuesday, June 18, 9:16 AM Adidas (ADDYY.PK) thinks sales of soccer-related products will rise to €2B ($2.7B) next year as the World Cup in Brazil drives demand. Nike (NKE) also is betting heavily on the global event - including a sponsorship of the popular national team from the host country. Sales of soccer apparel/gear is expected to be high enough in 2014 to also move the needle for Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS). Comment! [Consumer]
- Thursday, June 6, 9:35 PM A new $170M funding round values online sports apparel retailer Fanatics at $3.1B, reports the WSJ, double the level of a year ago. With expected revenue of $1B this year, the company is being valued at about 3x sales vs. - for example - Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) with a market cap of $6.4B on $5.8B in sales. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, June 4, 10:36 AM Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS +0.6%) ticks higher after Deutsche Bank (Buy, PT $57) analyst Mike Baker calls the company "one of the best growth stories in hardline retailing." Interestingly, Baker dismisses the Amazon threat thesis (popularized last year by David Einhorn's comments at Ira Sohn), saying "DKS has a strong competitive advantage over Amazon on product availability." (Also: DKS may benefit from Nike's popularity) Comment! [Consumer]
- Friday, May 31, 12:37 PM Fickle teenagers strike again: After teen-oriented retailers Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF +1.8%), Aeropostale (ARO +1.3%), and American Eagle Outfitters (AEO +2.1%) all posted disappointing results amid slumping same-store sales for the first part of the year, the question of the day in the sub-sector is what exactly do teens like? Though Urban Outfitter (URBN +1.6%), privately-held Forever 21, Vera Bradley (VRA -0.6%), and Lululemon (LULU +0.7%) all scored well in surveys and analyst polling - it was Nike (NKE +0.6%) that rated as the demographic's strongest preference. It's not a bad trend for Dick's Sporting Good (DKS +0.7%) either with 17% of the sporting good giant's sales tied to the swoosh. Comment! [Consumer]
- Tuesday, May 21, 7:53 AM More on Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) Q1: Consolidated same store sales decreased 3.8% after adjusted for a calendar shift, a mark which was worse than the company's own guidance for a 1%-2% dip. Gross profit as a percentage of total sales increased 8 bps to 30.87%. The retailer reiterates prior guidance of FY13 EPS of $2.84-$2.86 and says it expects same-store sales to increase 2%-3% during the period. DKS -0.4% premarket. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, Earnings]
- Tuesday, May 21, 7:32 AM Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS): Q1 EPS of $0.48 in-line. Revenue of $1.3B (+4.1% Y/Y) misses by $0.06B. (PR) Comment! [Earnings, Breaking News]

- Friday, May 3, 2:49 PM Athletic shoes in focus: Analysts think the strong quarter in North America by Adidas (PMMAF.PK) confirms that demand for athletic shoes is outpacing other retail categories. Nike (NKE +2%), Foot Locker (FL +0.9%), and Finish Line (FINL +3.1%) could surprise to the upside as new lines sell well and a shift in the product mix toward higher-margin basketball shoes helps boosts results - while don't count out Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS +2%) and Under Armour (UA +0.9%) to also catch some of the action. Comment! [Consumer]
- Monday, April 29, 7:07 AM Barclays initiates coverage on Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) with an Overweight rating. The firm's price target of $57 reps 20% upside potential for shares. Comment! [Consumer]
- Wednesday, April 24, 3:40 PM GE Capital (GE +2.5%) cuts off lending to gun shops in response to public backlash since the Sandy Hook shootings. Though the company isn't the first financial firm to back away from involvement with the gun industry, the development puts the spotlight back on sellers such as Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS -0.4%), Wal-Mart (WMT -1.2%), and Cabela's (CAB +0.9%) which could see more foot traffic. It's also of interest to gun manufacturers Smith & Wesson (SWHC +0.8%) and Sturn Ruger (RGR -0.8%) - wallowing around with relatively low P-E ratios with future demand tough to forecast. 32 Comments [Consumer]
- Tuesday, March 12, 6:37 AM BMO Capital upgrades Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) to Outperform from Market Perform after yesterday's post-earnings slide brought valuation back to attractive levels. Comment! [Consumer]

[On the Move] - Monday, March 11, 11:08 AM Heard during the Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS +3.7%) earnings call: Responding to a question on the delayed tax refund excuse for slumping Q1 sales marched out by major retailers such as Wal-Mart and AutoZone execs come clean. "We have no idea," they answer as they also note the impact (if any) can't be quantified. (More from DKS call) Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
- Monday, March 11, 10:39 AM Heard on the Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS) earnings call: 1) For Q1, comparable-store sales forecast to slip -2% to -1% . Higher merchandise margin seen offsetting escalating store costs during the period. 2) Investing in omnichannels and "shops" is a large focus from execs. 3) The company canceled some winter merchandise orders in December, but then lacked full inventory for the break toward cold weather in Q1. 4) The Lance Armstrong confession was bad for DKS business, in particular with Livestrong branded treadmills. DKS -7.0%. (PR) Comment! [Consumer, On the Move]
